"Original Omurice" Omelette + Rice = Omurice
Omurice, a beloved dish born in Japan, was created at the western-style restaurant "Panya no Shokudo" in Shiomibashi, Osaka (now Naniwa Ward) in 1922. The predecessor of the famous "Hokkyokusei" chain, Shigeo Kitahashi, started the restaurant. The iconic Omurice dish was born at "Panya no Shokudo" when a regular customer named Kotaka, who had stomach problems, always ate omelette and rice. One day in 1925, Shigeo, who was in his mid-20s at the time, decided to create a special dish by wrapping ketchup rice in a thin omelette and serving it to Kotaka. Impressed by the dish, Kotaka asked what it was, to which Shigeo replied on the spot, "It's Omurice, a combination of omelette and rice."
The interior of the Daimaru Umeda store features a counter with 8 seats. The counter table is dark brown with yellow chairs. The decor includes white and matcha-colored tile patterns on the walls, giving a simple and compact feel. The lighting consists of snow cave-shaped pendant lights and warm-toned recessed lights. The tableware includes nickel silver spoons, disposable chopsticks, paper napkins, and hard strong glasses. The facade is decorated with framed monochrome photographs from the early days of the restaurant, and the menu board displays the basic 7 dishes along with pictures of Omurice.
The Shinsaibashi main store has a nostalgic atmosphere with traditional decor and tatami mat seating. The space is relaxing, with a mix of Japanese elements like tatami and a courtyard garden, creating a cozy and familiar ambiance.
The restaurant chain has expanded to 15 locations, with the newest store opening at Kintetsu Department Store Abeno Harukas in July 2021. The menu includes dishes like Shrimp Omurice and Hokkyokusei's special Beef Stew Omurice, which are served with additional options like shrimp fry and beef stew toppings.
