"Original Omurice" Omelette + Rice = Omurice Omurice, a beloved dish born in Japan, was created at the western-style restaurant "Panya no Shokudo" in Shiomibashi, Osaka (now Naniwa Ward) in 1922. The predecessor of the famous "Hokkyokusei" chain, Shigeo Kitahashi, started the restaurant. The iconic Omurice dish was born at "Panya no Shokudo" when a regular customer named Kotaka, who had stomach problems, always ate omelette and rice. One day in 1925, Shigeo, who was in his mid-20s at the time, decided to create a special dish by wrapping ketchup rice in a thin omelette and serving it to Kotaka. Impressed by the dish, Kotaka asked what it was, to which Shigeo replied on the spot, "It's Omurice, a combination of omelette and rice." The interior of the Daimaru Umeda store features a counter with 8 seats. The counter table is dark brown with yellow chairs. The decor includes white and matcha-colored tile patterns on the walls, giving a simple and compact feel. The lighting consists of snow cave-shaped pendant lights and warm-toned recessed lights. The tableware includes nickel silver spoons, disposable chopsticks, paper napkins, and hard strong glasses. The facade is decorated with framed monochrome photographs from the early days of the restaurant, and the menu board displays the basic 7 dishes along with pictures of Omurice. The Shinsaibashi main store has a nostalgic atmosphere with traditional decor and tatami mat seating. The space is relaxing, with a mix of Japanese elements like tatami and a courtyard garden, creating a cozy and familiar ambiance. The restaurant chain has expanded to 15 locations, with the newest store opening at Kintetsu Department Store Abeno Harukas in July 2021. It's been a long time since I last visited. Huh? Did the plates change in size? Or is it just my imagination? My favorite is the ham omelette rice! Of course, I ordered it again today. Huh? Did the ham change? Have a lot of things changed while I was away? Or maybe my taste buds have changed? But the egg was so fluffy♪ The ketchup sauce was the same as always! And the pickled ginger on the side was still there. Despite all the changes, it was delicious. Thank you for the meal.

I finally got to visit Hokkyokusei, the original restaurant where omurice originated! Although I originally wanted to go to the main branch, I ended up at the Daimaru Umeda store due to time constraints. I waited in line for about 30 minutes (lol). They have a wide variety of omurice options, including hearty portions that even men would be satisfied with! The omurice, which is served with a sauce that is a mix between tomato and demi-glace, has a gentle flavor that I couldn't resist finishing in no time (lol). I really want to visit the main branch next time!

I visited the Hokkyokusei restaurant at Daimaru Umeda. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of Daimaru Umeda, a nostalgic gourmet fair was held from April 27th to May 7th for 11 days. As part of this event, Hokkyokusei offered a retro menu item called the "Adult's Children's Lunch." It consisted of ketchup rice with only onions, an omelette over rice, a meaty hamburger, shrimp fry, and cream croquette - a lunch that adults no longer eat as they grow older. It brought back memories of the past with its nostalgic flavors. This special Adult's Children's Lunch was limited to 20 servings and was only available during this time, so if you're interested, the restaurant opens at 10:00 am.

In a branch-like atmosphere, I had omurice from Hokkyokusei for breakfast! It was my first time trying it. I had always planned to go to the main store, but this time I prioritized my family's opinion and ended up eating at Daimaru, of all places, haha. I ordered the simple omurice! The ketchup rice had a light and simple seasoning that paired perfectly with the sauce! It truly lived up to the reputation of Hokkyokusei! It was delicious!

When I first went to the Lucua store, there was a 20-group wait, so I went to the Daimaru Umeda store and was able to go almost without waiting, luckily. It was a small store with only about 6 counter seats. I really love the classic ketchup omurice, but the sauce was more like a sauce than ketchup, so I tried the curry omurice this time. The omelette rice at Daimaru Umeda store's basement is delicious and convenient, making it easy to stop by while shopping. The omelette is soft and just the way I like it, but the ketchup rice inside is a bit bland. I wish it had a stronger ketchup flavor. The space is narrow and there are still dividers, making it very difficult to eat. Despite that, the taste is good so I give it a high rating.

I was drawn to the delicious looking photos of omurice and fried shrimp displayed in front of the restaurant. The menu stated that omurice with hayashi sauce was the most popular, so I ordered that. It had a very gentle flavor and was delicious! I was quite hungry, so I finished it all in no time! The miso soup that came with the set was also delicious and comforting.

I ordered the beef. I thought the price had not gone up, but it was a bit smaller. The beef is the same quality as before, so it's just the right size for my stomach. For some reason, I always crave omurice. I end up coming to eat it about 5-6 times a year. Maybe it's because it's a taste from my childhood?

I arrived around 1:30 on a weekday. The place was packed, so I lined up at the register. A cool-looking girl checked the number of people and if we wanted to eat in, then handed us the menu. While waiting, I looked at the menu and watched them making omurice. Luckily, a table opened up quickly so I sat down and ordered the mini omurice with chicken. The seating area was a bit cramped, but that's okay. The mini omurice was packed with rice and had a good amount of filling. I wasn't asked about the sauce, but it seemed like ketchup or tomato sauce. The thin, firm egg was beautifully made. It was almost a shame to eat it, but I did (laughs). The meal came with salad, shrimp fry, fried chicken, and potato salad. The fried items were freshly made and delicious. The chicken was bigger and tastier than I expected. I was so full! Thank you for the meal.

I revised the score as I gave it too high last time. This is Hokkyokusei in Umeda Daimaru. It's my favorite omurice specialty restaurant. This time, I stopped by on my way back home. They had a new Mini Omurice Plate, which includes 2 shrimp fries, potato salad, fresh vegetables, and a choice of chicken or mushroom mini omurice for 1,190 yen. It's a great deal! The potato salad is rich and delicious, not made with commercial ingredients. The shrimp fries are thick and made with good quality shrimp. Of course, the omurice is excellent. By the way, the reason why the town of Hokutatsu Shisui in Ishikawa Prefecture is known as the town of omurice is because the founder of Hokkyokusei is from there. It's interesting how Ishikawa Prefecture and Osaka Prefecture have a connection like this. ( * ´∀` *)

Visited for a late lunch on a Saturday. A small restaurant with only 7-8 counter seats. Located in the basement of Daimaru Umeda store, it was crowded but the turnover was fast. Each seat is separated by acrylic boards and alcohol is provided for COVID-19 prevention. Known as the birthplace of omurice, the original omurice. I ordered the standard chicken omurice and added 2 pieces of fried chicken because I was a bit hungry. The kitchen is right next to the counter seats, and the chef's skills are on full display. The omurice arrived promptly, beautifully presented on a white plate. The fluffy egg and lightly seasoned rice were delicious, complemented by the sweet tomato sauce. The fried chicken, made with large pieces of thigh meat, had a strong garlic and ginger flavor. Overall, a high-quality omurice with no unnecessary elements. Personally, I think if you want omurice, North Star is the place to go.

Located in the basement 2 floor of Daimaru Department Store, directly connected to Osaka Station, there is a small eat-in space with only 6 counter seats. As a big fan of omurice, I had to visit this omurice origin shop! Omurice was first created as a special dish in 1922. With locations only in Kyoto, Osaka, and Hyogo, I visited this place during my stay at Hotel Granvia Osaka above Daimaru. It was Sunday at 5 pm, a tricky time, but I was able to get a seat easily. I was torn between the menu options! As a fan of shrimp fry, I added 3 pieces of shrimp fry as a topping to the beef omurice for an extra 450 yen. Yes, I went all out. The omurice with ketchup sauce arrived. Oh my goodness! Is there really something this delicious in the world? The shrimp fry was also delicious. The tartar sauce had a perfect flavor. I couldn't help but eat it all in a dream-like state. I also saw the "Limited 10-color Beef Stew Omurice for 1,500 yen" and I definitely want to try that too! Why are good restaurants always so far away? I regret not going back the next day. I had Hayashi rice-covered omelette rice. Without a doubt, it was more delicious than any omelette rice I have ever eaten. The fluffy egg wrapped around the buttered rice with the Hayashi sauce poured over it, everything intertwined perfectly and tasted really good. I also tried the fried chicken, which was also delicious. It's no wonder this restaurant has been around since the Taisho era.

Whenever I stay in Osaka, I always end up drinking heavily in Kitashinchi, so the next morning, I go to Hokkyokusei in Daimaru underground at Umeda station for breakfast. This place opens at 10 am, perfect for brunch. I was the first customer and I ordered the mushroom omelette rice since it's autumn. I enjoyed watching them make it from scratch. Reflecting on last night's heavy drinking, I savored the comforting and gentle taste. The staff's service was also very good and heartfelt. I will definitely come back!

On this day, I left Umeda Daimaru temporarily to pursue my goal of noodle hunting, then reunited with my family in the afternoon. Due to their request for a meal, we ended up at a place serving omurice. This place is famous for being the birthplace of omurice, so it was great to be able to try it at a commercial facility. It was lunchtime and there was a wait, with only counter seats available. We ate quickly and left. We ordered the chicken omurice and fried chicken set. When it was served, the omurice looked exactly like how it should - the egg was thin and fluffy, while the chicken rice had a tangy taste with various ingredients rolled in. The sauce was light and the overall taste was familiar yet enjoyable. It was delicious even though I had never tried it before. Thank you for always giving me the freedom to pursue my noodle adventures.

The afternoon schedule was a bit awkward, so I decided to have a quick bite at Daimaru. I didn't have to wait long and was able to be seated right away. I ordered the Hayashi Omurice, which was served quickly. The dish was delicious, with the butter rice not being too heavy and the egg being perfectly runny. The Hayashi Omurice may be a bit pricier than others, but I would definitely order it again. The ginger served on the side was also very tasty. The restaurant only has counter seating, so the turnover is fast. If there is a wait, they take your order in advance so the food arrives as soon as you sit down. I love how fast and efficient this place is. I would love to visit again sometime.
