I went on a summer trip to Hokkaido. It was my 6th time visiting Hokkaido, so I considered myself an intermediate traveler. I wanted to explore a new side of Hokkaido that I hadn't seen before, so I had various ideas like visiting Akkeshi to enjoy my favorite oysters, or staying at the Hoshino Resorts KAI Tsugaru in Aomori on the way back since the Hokkaido Shinkansen now runs through there. However, my partner suggested going to Shakotan to try sea urchin, which is only available from June to August. So, our destination for this Hokkaido trip was decided to be Shakotan! We arrived at Suginoya after a long drive in my partner's car, which hadn't been driven for 15 years. We struggled to find accommodation as most places were fully booked, but we found Suginoya, a large ryokan with a reputation for its sea urchin donburi. We were pleasantly surprised by the size of the ryokan and our spacious room. Since we were planning to have sea urchin donburi for breakfast, we declined the breakfast option. The owner kindly offered to serve us the sea urchin donburi at the ryokan itself. Despite the rainy weather forecast, we were excited to try the sea urchin donburi. The donburi was served with Murasaki sea urchin as they couldn't get the Bafun sea urchin on the day we arrived, but they managed to get some the next day. The portion was generous, and we were both completely satisfied after finishing the meal. The price was surprisingly reasonable at 3000 yen. We also had a delicious dinner at the ryokan, which included rice, sea urchin miso soup, and various seafood dishes. The food was simple but tasty, reminiscent of a home-cooked meal. The highlight of the trip was the fresh sea urchin we had that night, which left a lasting impression on us. After dinner, we enjoyed a relaxing soak in a nearby hot spring before returning to our room for a sake drinking session. The hospitality at Suginoya made us feel right at home, and we were given the freedom to enjoy our stay as if we were at our own place. The ryokan provided face towels, toothbrushes, and yukatas in the room, and the staff kindly set up the futons for us. Overall, our experience at Suginoya was fantastic, and we highly recommend it to anyone looking to enjoy fresh sea urchin in Shakotan.
