After finishing work at Shukansen-ji temple... It's lunchtime. Where should I go today? I have to go to the Shima area in the afternoon, so I casually drive towards Shima and find myself near the Kyushu University Ito Campus. It's been over 10 years since Kyushu University moved, right? When will it be completed? The area around the campus has seen some development with stores like Nafco and convenience stores opening up, but not much development overall. The area mainly consists of apartments and dormitories for students. One particular restaurant has caught my eye for a while now. The name of the place is "Uchimataya," which is written as 家又家 in Japanese. A unique name for a restaurant. It is located a little before the Ito Campus, at a white building on the first floor. I've always been curious about their "tonkatsu" (pork cutlet) dish. The sign next to the name says "manpuku ippon." I assume it's a hearty restaurant catering to students. The parking lot is located a few cars secured down a road at the back. It's almost 1 pm when I arrive. The place is bustling with energy and almost full. It's a cozy restaurant with counter seats, table seats, and even a raised tatami seating area at the back, creating a cute izakaya atmosphere. I take a seat at the end of the counter and look at the menu. I decide to order their recommended dish, the "Thick-cut Pork Cutlet Set" (900 yen). It's peak lunchtime, so I have to wait a bit. While waiting... I notice that the place is filled with young men who seem to be Kyushu University students. It's all guys. One after another, they order the "Gekiatsu Don" dish. It catches my eye because it costs 1,200 yen! It includes pork cutlet, fried chicken, shrimp fry, and Ito pork mixed rice bowl. The portion is massive. I can't believe how much they can eat. I'm impressed by the dish. I receive my pork cutlet set. I had ordered extra rice in a large bowl. The portion is even bigger than I expected! It's a great restaurant. The pork cutlet is indeed thick-cut. I try a piece. It's piping hot, so I eat it carefully, but it's delicious! The crispy coating, the tender meat... it's really tasty! I take a big bite and end up burning the roof of my mouth a little. But it's worth it. The extra rice is also delicious. It comes with cold udon noodles, which pair perfectly with the pork cutlet. The soup is made with eggs. It's soothing. This meal is perfect. I considered getting the "V Ton Set Meal" (1,080 yen) with double pork cutlets for an additional 180 yen, but the normal portion was more than enough for me. I finish the meal. Thank you for the delicious food. It was really tasty. The pork cutlet set for 900 yen may seem a bit pricey, but once you taste it, you realize it's great value for money. In return, they offer 5 rice bowl options for only 680 yen each, which seems very affordable. As the lunch rush dies down, regular customers, mostly older men, start coming in one by one. The "Chicken Nanban Set" (680 yen) seems to be popular among them. This place is bound to become popular. I'll definitely come back. I hope it becomes a renowned restaurant with a history alongside Kyushu University Ito Campus. I have a food blog. → WANDERING/【Manpuku Ippon Uchimataya】 *The photos have been increased.
