G‐G-MOMOCHI
Located along the street on the south side of the intersection of Noge and National Route 263 Sawayama Street in Sawara Ward, Fukuoka City, is an udon restaurant called "Sane Udon". The restaurant was founded by Mr. Shozo Onishi in 1976 in Tobata Ward, Kitakyushu City, as a "Sanuki Udon" shop, and has since expanded as a chain primarily in Kitakyushu City. As of July of this year (2019), they have a total of 43 stores in northern Fukuoka Prefecture, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and Saga Prefecture. It can be described as the Kitakyushu version of the udon restaurant "West" in Hakata. While starting as a "Sanuki Udon" shop, they have evolved with unique flavors and menu items tailored to the preferences of the local people in Kitakyushu, offering slightly softer "Hakata-style udon" noodles, as well as the option to change to thin noodle udon called "Saimen" or "Soba". Their specialty menu item is the "Kashiwa Udon" priced at 550 yen, which features sweetly cooked chicken placed on top of the noodles. Side menu items such as "Kashiwa Onigiri (2 pieces for 200 yen)", "Sansai Jumbo Inari (130 yen)", and "Botamochi (130 yen)" are also popular. Previously, all stores were open 24 hours, but since 2016, some stores have ended late-night operations. The Noge store, like other stores, is open from 9:00 am to 1:00 am. Additionally, all stores have a spacious parking lot, except for the "Uomachi store" in Kokura Kita Ward, which does not have a dedicated parking lot. This Noge store is the nearest "Sane Udon" to my living area. About five years ago, during a business trip to Yahata Nishi Ward, I was introduced to the "Sane Udon Jinzan store" by my colleague N, who is from Kitakyushu. He recommended the "Kashiwa Udon" saying, "Kitakyu's udon is great", and I tried it. The deliciousness of the sweetly cooked "Kashiwa" chicken made me genuinely impressed with my first experience of "Sane" and "Kashiwa Udon". Since then, I became aware of having a "Sane Udon" store nearby. Sometimes I think, "I want to eat 'Kashiwa Udon'", and I casually stop by. Recently, I have been using the "Sane Udon Hashimoto store" along the outer ring road more often, so it had been a while since I visited this store. I noticed that the interior of the store had been renovated. It was just before 10:00 am, and I was the first customer of the day. The restaurant has raised seating areas on both sides, with tables in between. I sat at a two-person table by the window. I glanced at the menu with over 100 items, but ended up choosing the "Kashiwa Udon" for 550 yen as usual. I also ordered the "Sansai Jumbo Inari" for 130 yen. The food was served promptly. The "Kashiwa Udon" is topped with "Tenkasu" on the table. The rich broth is made from shiitake mushrooms, kelp, mackerel, sand lance, and bonito, with the added umami of sweetly cooked "Kashiwa" chicken (chicken meat). The "Kashiwa" chicken is finely chopped but has a firm texture. The homemade noodles from Sane have a unique texture, different from "Hakata Yawaraka", known as "Kitakyu Mochiyawa". The "Sane" fish cake with the name "Sane" and green onions are also accents. I slurped and chewed happily, enjoying the delicious meal. It's always delicious no matter how many times I eat it. The "Sansai Jumbo Inari" is not the "Okowa" type, but a firmly vinegared "Inari Sushi". The vinegared rice goes well with the sweet broth of the udon. A satisfying brunch with both quality and quantity. Next time, I might try a rice bowl dish. But I'll probably end up with "Kashiwa" again (laughs). I'll visit again, thank you for the meal.
