大阪めんま
In Minoh City, Osaka Prefecture, inside Hashimoto-tei along the Minoh Park Waterfall Path, there is a shop called "Franc et élégant YUZUYA." Hashimoto-tei was originally built as a ryokan at the foot of the first bridge on the waterfall path in 1930, and has been loved as a symbol of Minoh Park and a tourist destination for over 100 years. After a temporary closure due to a lack of successors, the building was renovated in 2004 to reopen as a complex facility with a café, gallery, and event space on the first floor, and a venue for exchange and events on the second floor. Due to a landslide in 2016, the building was completely removed in January 2019, but in response to the citizens' request to preserve the valuable Meiji-era building, the exterior of the original Hashimoto-tei was restored, creating a new tourist attraction and symbol for the area.
Tenants were recruited based on using local specialty products, and in 2020, a French restaurant in Minoh City called "franc et élégant" opened a shop called "Franc et élégant YUZUYA." This shop mainly features the local specialty product of Minoh, which is yuzu. Yuzu in Minoh's Todoromi district is mostly grown through seedling cultivation, which takes 15-16 years to harvest compared to grafted yuzu that can be harvested in 4-5 years. The yuzu from Minoh is known for its large size and rich flavor. One of the highlights of the shop is the "Little Treasure," a confection made by combining fair-trade white chocolate and yolk paste, wrapped in yuzu-scented mochi. After enjoying the autumn leaves at Minoh Waterfall, I decided to stop by the shop to try it.
I visited the shop on a Saturday around 11:20 am. I ordered the "Little Treasure Set" for 900 yen, which includes a drink. I chose to add 100 yen for the "White Chocolate Yuzu Latte (Hot)." The mochi was soft with a slight chewiness, and the refreshing and fragrant yuzu aroma paired perfectly with the creamy and flavorful white chocolate and yolk paste, creating an elegant and light sweet treat. It was absolutely delicious! The White Chocolate Yuzu Latte was also delightful, but personally, I found the combination of coffee and citrus flavor a bit challenging, so I might have preferred the coffee on its own. The Little Treasure became a favorite sweet treat that I will definitely buy as a souvenir again.
Next time I visit Minoh Park, I would like to try the "YUZUYA Style Sushi" takeout shop called "YUZUYA Bettei," which opened in 2021, featuring traditional Japanese sushi and fermented foods like pickles, all with the essence of yuzu. Thank you for the wonderful meal!
