After enjoying delicious curry udon at Takeya for lunch, I headed to Bondy Honten in Kanda. It was past 8:30 pm when I arrived in the area. I wandered around but found that there were fewer curry restaurants open at night compared to during the day, so I decided to revisit this place instead of trying out a new one. I climbed the stairs to the second floor of a mixed-use building off Yasukuni Street, where only two young women were waiting in front of the restaurant. I ordered the following from the male staff member who handed me the menu: Mixed Curry (medium spicy) for 1750 yen (including tax), Cheese Topping for an additional 150 yen (excluding tax), and a smaller portion of rice (200g). As soon as the waiting chairs became available, I was seated at the counter after the two women who were there before me. Last time, I sat at a shared table with a transparent partition, which was comfortable, but this time, I felt a bit uneasy sitting at the counter closest to the kitchen. A young female staff member quickly brought me some water and a couple of hot round potatoes with butter. I think they were Yukon Gold. When I split open the potatoes and put butter on them, the butter melted beautifully. Delicious! After finishing the potatoes, my Mixed Curry arrived at the perfect timing. The curry roux, made with a secret spice blend, paired well with the rice topped with cheese. The chicken in the curry was the same as the one that won the first Kanda Curry Grand Prix, and it was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The curry also contained shrimp, clams, and large mushrooms, all with a nice texture. And when I lifted the yellow object on top of the roux with my fork, the cheese stretched beautifully. All for 1900 yen. And no, don't even think about saying the cheese was hard tonight! Just leave me alone!

On a regular day, I lined up for about 20 minutes after 12 o'clock to enter the restaurant. The beef curry with a sweet flavor, the beef curry with a medium spice level, and the baked apple curry are delicious! The sweet one is not spicy at all, it's actually quite sweet. The medium-spicy one is just slightly spicy compared to the sweet one. I recommend the medium-spicy curry. Even though I'm not a fan of spicy food, I can handle it. There are chunks of beef inside, which I don't like. I prefer just the curry sauce. The rice comes with cheese sprinkled on top, green pickles, and a pickled plum on the side. On the table, there are radish, raisins, and pickled vegetables, which is a nice touch. The curry also comes with two steamed potatoes and butter, which are also delicious. For dessert, there is baked apple, which is served cold! This should be called compote, not baked apple. It tastes good as a compote, but it was a bit annoying.

Visited on a stamp rally. The winter limited oyster curry was good, but this year I went back to basics with beef. The sauce has a thick texture with various umami flavors melted in. There are 5-6 chunks of diced beef in it. The taste that has been passed down for many years is undeniable, and you can feel the care put into making it. However, as I am not a big fan of beef curry, I ordered a different menu item this time. The mix curry was good last time though. This time, I went for the shrimp curry for 1600 yen! I was able to enter the restaurant after just a 5-minute wait, and I was lightly impressed. I was seated at the counter this time. Unlike the table seats from last time, the counter had a more nostalgic and traditional atmosphere. Soon, a plate of two potatoes with butter was served. The potatoes were delicious and generously sized. I enjoyed one as a potato with butter and the other as part of the curry. Both ways of eating were delicious. As a person with a big appetite, this didn't fill me up at all. Now, onto the main shrimp curry. In the photo, you can't see many shrimp, but they were plentiful along with large mushrooms in the curry. The rice had melted cheese on top, which was dangerously delicious. Quite often, I heard customers adding cheese to their curry, but the cheese aroma was enjoyable enough without adding more. I chose the medium spicy shrimp curry, and it had a nice level of spiciness with a hint of sweetness, possibly from the coconut milk. I found a curry sauce that I really liked. The dried raisins for free topping had changed from my previous visit, now coated in raisin sugar. Adding them to the curry enhanced the sweetness, making it even more delicious. You can also enjoy Fukujinzuke and pickled radish. The small plum on the rice was a perfect ending. The restaurant was always full, so as soon as I finished eating, the plates were cleared quickly. Some of the staff seemed a bit unfriendly, perhaps due to being busy, but the taste of the European-style curry and the atmosphere at the counter were very nice. This is my fourth visit to Bondi. Whenever I go to Jinbocho, I feel like eating here. I had two potatoes and European-style curry and was completely satisfied! The beef in the beef curry was chunky and very satisfying. It was my first time trying ginger ale, and it was refreshing. It was crowded during dinner time, so we had to line up all the way down the stairs, but I think we could have been seated in at least 30 minutes. Especially for solo customers, I think it would be nice to be seated earlier!

The curry roux had a sweetness at first, followed by just the right amount of spiciness as it went down my throat. The beef was full of flavor, and I kept eating bite after bite. The cheese and potatoes went perfectly with it! The curry was filled with chunks of meat, providing a satisfying meal. I ended up feeling full more than I expected. For me, it's the number one European-style curry restaurant. It's located on the second floor of the Kanda Old Book Center Building, and although I used to enter from the bookstore back then, now it seems you enter from the back of the building. I arrived at the restaurant before 11 am, but there was already a line of about 10 people, perhaps because a typhoon was approaching. The staff was taking orders before opening, so I ordered the spicy beef curry, a classic European curry, verbally. Right on time, the first round of opening, I was guided to a counter seat. First, they brought potatoes. I cut them with a spoon and enjoyed them with salt while waiting for the curry. It was delicious and fluffy. After about 5 minutes, the long-awaited curry and rice arrived! No matter how many years pass, it never changes. Truly the best European curry from the long-standing BONDI!
