For dinner on the second day in Hakodate, I went to a local restaurant with the on-site staff. The restaurant is located about 500m from Hakodate Goryokaku Station. The location and the unique exterior of the building make it seem like it's not a place for casual drop-in visitors. The building looks like a fisherman's hut, and when you open the sliding door and enter the restaurant, it feels dim inside. Honestly, in such restaurants, where you can't clearly see the food, it seems like there might be some shortcuts taken, so expectations are low. However, today I followed the strong recommendation of the local staff, Dela-san.
We were seated in a raised tatami area at the back of the restaurant, which was a thoughtful consideration for my back pain. We left the ordering to Dela-san, and first, a sashimi platter arrived, which was surprisingly impressive. It exceeded my expectations in a good way. It included saltwater sea urchin, live botan shrimp, live tsubugai (whelk), tako (octopus), kanpachi (amberjack), honmaguro (bluefin tuna), homemade shimesaba (marinated mackerel), and salmon. I was thrilled by this selection.
The sea urchin, tsubugai, and shrimp alone were enough to enjoy. Then came a variety of gifts from the sea of Hokkaido, such as boiled hairy crab, live squid sashimi, grilled tuna collar, and more. The live squid sashimi had lovely morsels, and I indulged in all of it. I started with Sapporo draft beer and then switched to a selection of various sake, enjoying a popular sake from Aomori called Toyobai and Tatenokawa from Akita.
I thoroughly enjoyed the gifts from the sea of Hokkaido, and I left the restaurant feeling full and happy. I couldn't even say, "You guys really ate well using me as an excuse," but I was truly grateful. Thank you, Dela-san! 🍣🍺🦐
