"First Visit in May 2022" The food known as "tonkatsu" gives a high level of satisfaction at a relatively affordable price. Unlike tempura, which can easily make your wallet lighter in high-end restaurants, tonkatsu is more budget-friendly. In the Tokyo area, it's a bit challenging to find tonkatsu dishes priced over 5,000 yen, even for premium black pork tonkatsu in places like Sapporo costing around 3,000 yen. On the other hand, at tonkatsu family restaurants like "Katsuya," "Katsuten," and "Katsufuji," you can enjoy a filling tonkatsu set meal for around 1,000 yen, with change left over. The volume zone for a typical "tonkatsu set meal" seems to be in the low 1,000 yen range. In this context, the most affordable set meal at "Tonkatsu Anzu," starting from 1,650 yen including tax, can be considered somewhat upscale in Hokkaido. Despite expanding from Tokyo to Sapporo with two branches, the choice of a third branch in Chitose remains unclear, especially with the presence of budget-friendly "Katsuya," a different chain "Katsufuji" nearby, and the prominent Hokkaido tonkatsu restaurant "Tonkatsu Tamafuji" in the same city. ------------------------------ I tried their main menu item, the "Special Rosu Katsu Set Meal," at Anzu this time. It features an ultra-thick 300g cutlet made with SPF (sterile) pork, which is quite substantial compared to the typical 120-180g tonkatsu set meals. Although the "Upper Rosu Katsu Set Meal (200g)" would have been sufficient, the description of the "true essence of Anzu" being evident from this thickness compelled me to try it. Priced at 2,200 yen including tax for a 300g set meal, it is relatively cost-effective, even slightly cheaper than restaurants like "Tamafuji" in the same price range. The cutlet was indeed thick, and the thin coating allowed the meat's umami flavor to shine, making it enjoyable without getting too heavy. However, I must mention that the meat quality was not exceptional this time, as some parts contained tough sinew. The most disappointing aspect was the lack of dressing for the shredded cabbage. It's rare for tonkatsu restaurants not to offer multiple dressings for cabbage, as they usually provide options to suit your taste. Given their emphasis on tonkatsu with salt, I expected a bit more attention to detail for the cabbage and dressing. ------------------------------ The interior of the restaurant, a former "Beef Impact" location, had recently added counter seats near the entrance. The menu mainly features Rosu and Hire (loin) set meals, with curry dishes as well. While they offer a mixed shrimp fry, they do not have options like Menchi Katsu or specialty katsu, making the menu somewhat limited. Additionally, the typical free rice and cabbage refill service commonly found in tonkatsu specialty restaurants was not available. As an old reviewer who only gives ratings in 0.5 increments, I would rate the food and taste aspect close to 3.5, leaning towards 3.0, and the service aspect at 2.5 due to the dressing issue mentioned earlier. To be honest, my expectations were quite high, but the overall evaluation did not exceed them, so I may revisit if I feel like it. ============================== ◇ Special Rosu Katsu Set Meal 2,200 yen ◇
