Located at the base of the Shakotan Peninsula, Kotobira Town is not as well-known as its neighboring towns of Yoichi and Shakotan in Hokkaido. However, one of the town's only confectionery shops, Tabata Kashi-ten, is gaining a reputation for its unique Tabata Sand. The sand is wrapped in a gold package and consists of a moist biscuit filled with plenty of raisins and a buttercream-like filling. It is delicious, especially when chilled in the refrigerator before eating. In addition to the Tabata Sand, the shop also offers other treats such as roll cakes, daifuku, and sakuramochi. The daifuku, with its moist castella-like skin and flavorful red bean paste, is a nostalgic yet modern treat. If you are in the area to enjoy sea urchin or the famous Shakotan Blue, consider stopping by Tabata Kashi-ten for a delicious snack.

I unexpectedly enjoyed the crispy texture of the cookie at Marcei Butter Sand, which is different from the slightly moist texture of the sandwich. The cookie has raisins in it, and it melts a bit in the heat, which is reminiscent of Marcei Butter Sand. It was delicious when paired with coffee. I ended up at this shop after having lunch at another place nearby. They also sell cakes in the store, and I thought it would be nice to have some dessert after the meal. When the staff came out, I asked for their recommendation, and they suggested the Butter Sand. I bought one in each different colored wrapping film, but they said the content was the same. I heard that the shop was recently featured in the media, promoting the Butter Sand. I surprisingly liked the Butter Sand, so I plan to come back and buy it again next time.
