I stayed in Hakodate for a while, and today, being a Saturday, I decided to expand my range and visit this restaurant, which is said to be one of the "Three Great Cafeterias of Hakodate." Their specialty is the Jumbo Roast Chicken and they are open every day without a break. There is a sign outside celebrating their achievement of 10,000 consecutive days of being open. This milestone was reached on December 12, 2021, so my visit today marks the 10,481st day. While in the past such dedication would have been praised without question, in today's times, I can't help but think that it's unnecessary to work so hard without taking a break when you could just rest when you need to. When I arrived at the restaurant, it seemed like they were on a break as there was no one around. The inside of the restaurant was dimly lit and quiet. Despite this, they were open for business. The restaurant is quite small, but being one of the Three Great Cafeterias of Hakodate, I can imagine it gets quite crowded during peak hours. Looking at the menu, I noticed that the prices were higher than the photos of the menu from a year ago on Tabelog. There was a note by the self-service water cooler instructing customers to turn it on and off each time. It seems that the dim lighting is a sign of their struggle against rising utility costs. I decided to order the Jumbo Roast Chicken set meal and debated what to add. The side dishes for the set meal were discounted by 100 yen each, and the Vegetable Stir-fry set meal, Pork Cutlet set meal, and Cutlet set meal were all priced the same. I couldn't rely on my years of dining out experience to understand the pricing system. I decided to add just the Vegetable Stir-fry. While waiting for the food, I felt pressured to conserve electricity and water even in the restroom. When the food was served, the Jumbo Roast Chicken did have a good amount of juiciness and was easy to eat. The slight saltiness on the surface made the rice taste better. The Vegetable Stir-fry was quite ordinary, and the pricing compared to the Pork Cutlet raised more questions. As I started eating, an elderly lady behind me ordered two Jumbo Roast Chickens for takeout and sat staring at me throughout my meal. Payment was cash only. After being shown their extreme frugality, I couldn't complain about the slight fee for cashless payments.
