During my spring 2018 trip to Hokkaido, I visited the remote island of Okushiri. This island suffered devastating damage from the Hokkaido Southwest Offshore Earthquake that occurred on July 12, 1993 at 10:17 PM. Now, 25 years later, the island has made a remarkable recovery and the resilient residents have rebuilt their lives. Despite only spending 2 nights and 3 days on the island, I have created some wonderful memories. The return journey on the Karanse Okushiri ferry departed the Okushiri Terminal at 12:05 PM and is scheduled to arrive at Setana Port at 1:40 PM. The second-class cabin on the ferry was quite crowded due to group tour passengers, but I decided to enjoy a Hima-Wari bento box that I had reserved and purchased before boarding. Okushiri Island has only one Seicomart convenience store in Hokkaido, and I believe this Hima-Wari bento shop is the only one as well. During peak season, they offer a "Seafood Bento" made with abalone and sea urchin caught in Okushiri Island (price unknown). It must be quite expensive. I opted for a safe Hima-Wari bento box, which cost 840 yen (tax included) and enjoyed it while looking at Okushiri Island on the left side of the ferry. I could also see the Miyazu Benten Shrine, which I walked to from my accommodation at Oosuda Inn. The bento box included grilled salmon, rolled omelette, Namegari mushroom & mountain vegetables, sausage, half croquette, smoked squid, pork-wrapped butterbur stalks, egg salad, and pickled seaweed. The salmon was thick and the rolled omelette was made with real eggs. It had a homemade feel compared to a regular bento box, with a touch of Okushiri Island's uniqueness. The cost performance was not bad, and the rice, which I assume was Okushiri rice, was very delicious. The last meal on Okushiri Island was the Hima-Wari bento box, but I still wish I had tried the seafood bento. I'll save that for next time. Thank you for the meal.
