On the final day of the consecutive holidays, I went on a day trip to Suisen-tei at Lake Shikotsu. Suisen-tei is a restaurant where you can also enjoy lunch as part of the day trip bathing package. I called on Saturday, so I thought that Monday's public holiday might be fully booked, but there were hardly any people there. For the day trip bathing, there were probably only 3 of us, including me, in the women's bath. It was quiet and nice, but I hope it doesn't go out of business. When going with a partner, the public baths are separate, which can be boring, so this time we decided to use the private bath as well. The public bath was available from 12 o'clock, while lunch and the private bath were from 11 o'clock, so we booked it as follows:
- Private bath from 11 am for 40 minutes.
- Lunch from 12 pm.
- Public bath until 3 pm.
In the end, it was a bit rushed, but if you don't mind, the 40-minute private bath was also good. It costs in the 3000 yen range, whereas 60 minutes costs around 4300 yen. The private bath was quite spacious, so it could accommodate 3-4 people, including children. After warming up in the bath, I was looking forward to lunch. When we entered Suisen-tei, there were two other groups of customers, but no staff came out. We had to go all the way to the kitchen and call out before someone appeared. The lunch box that was served was a two-tiered box that you open yourself. Wow, it was luxurious! It included sashimi, tempura, grilled dishes, steamed dishes, and more. And it was delicious! I was pleasantly surprised by the flavors. Last time I came for lunch without a reservation, and they couldn't serve anything other than soba because a group was there. Finally, I could eat, and it was delicious! The scallops in the sashimi were fresh, and despite being in the mountains, it was unexpectedly good. The sashimi was better than the one I had at Hotel Nikko a few days ago. My favorite tamagoyaki was also included, and the rice had salmon and salmon roe on top! The miso soup was crab soup. It was all my favorites! I finished lunch with great satisfaction and then headed to the public bath. In the women's bath, there were two customers who had just left, so the bath was practically private! Lucky me! I was excited to go to the open-air bath, but it was cold! The water was colder than my body temperature. It was around 34 degrees. It felt like a warm swimming pool! It was impossible to stay in it when it was cold outside! So, I moved to the indoor bath. However, after relaxing in the indoor bath, I started feeling hot... Oh, maybe I can go back to the open-air bath now? I thought, so I went back to the cold open-air bath! If I don't move, it's not too hot or too cold. It was a temperature where I could stay for a while. Later, I heard that the men's bath was also cold. Well, it's silly to heat up the bath for just three customers... (But I think it's a service that should be provided since we are paying). But since I had already used the private bath and enjoyed a delicious lunch, I was okay with it! There were few people, so I had a good time! I wonder if there were more customers at the neighboring Mizu no Uta. Hang in there, Suisen-tei! I like it. One thing that was a bit inconvenient was the layout of the building. To get to Suisen-tei from inside the building, you have to go down to the basement and then go up the stairs. If you don't like that, you have to go outside once before entering. Frankly, both are a hassle! When I came to stay with my grandmother before, it was difficult to bring my grandmother, who had bad knees, to Suisen-tei, which is also the breakfast venue. It has a calm atmosphere and doesn't feel like it's geared towards young people, but it's not functional for the elderly either, which is a shame. The day trip bathing with a Matsukadotei bento box included was 2,675 yen per person. Last week, I also visited the neighboring Mizu no Uta, but they don't serve Japanese food, so if you want a hinoki bath and Japanese food, Suisen-tei is the place to go. If you want a buffet with healthy Western food and a large bath, then Mizu no Uta (including bathing for 2,900 yen) is the place to go. It depends on how you feel at the time, but personally, I like Suisen-tei because it's quiet.
