During the day, Biei is beautiful everywhere you go, with Instagram-worthy spots, but when it comes to finding a place to eat at night, there weren't many appealing options. I asked the staff at my accommodation for recommendations, and they suggested "Tsurukame". It's a new izakaya/small restaurant where you can enjoy proper meals in this area. It's about a 5-6 minute walk from JR Biei Station, and when I arrived around 6:50 pm, there were no other customers yet. There were two Korean tourists outside the restaurant, hesitating to enter, but seeing me go in seemed to reassure them and they followed. Biei is usually bustling with tourists, but at night, the streets become quiet with fewer people around. I wonder if everyone goes back to their hotels. Running a restaurant in a tourist destination like this must be quite challenging. I started with a sake from Kushiro, Fukushi Junmai, and the appetizers served were of high quality. Then, I enjoyed sashimi of live shrimp from Akkeshi, sea urchin from Hidaka, and fresh oysters from Maruemon, all delicious and fresh. I also tried the grilled beef from Biei Wagyu, sampling different cuts one by one. I ordered the Kunitoki Onikoroshi from Mashike, followed by salmon sashimi. I wanted to try the liver, but they didn't have it, which was a bit disappointing. I also had fried mozzarella cheese and tofu, with a surprising touch of fried tomatoes, adding a fresh acidity. I ended the meal with a refreshing unpasteurized sake, Seishinkyo Tokubetsu Junmai. This was my second time in Biei, and I finally found a restaurant where I could truly enjoy the food.
