This is a famous Tokyo representative tsukemen shop called "Tsukemen Michi," which opened in July 2009 and is selected as one of the top 100 restaurants on Tabelog every year. The location is in a shopping street called "Ichiban-gai," about a 2-minute walk from Denenchofu Station's north exit in Katsushika-ku, Tokyo. There is a coin parking nearby. I revisited after a few years on a weekday around 11:30 am and there were 7 people waiting outside. I joined the end of the line and waited for about 20 minutes before being prompted by the staff to purchase tickets at the ticket machine on the left side of the store for the Special Tsukemen for ¥1,600 and a large serving of noodles for an additional ¥300. I took my food ticket and waited outside on a chair. After a few more minutes, I was escorted inside. The interior of the shop has a stylish design with a black color scheme. There are only 8 seats at the L-shaped counter. The space at the counter is generously allocated for each individual. The operation is run by two staff members, one for cooking and one for the front of the house. Both are young men, with the front of house staff checking the line outside and assisting inside, while the cook provides detailed explanations of the dishes with a smile. After about 10 minutes of waiting, the food was served. The toppings were served separately on a plate, giving a luxurious appearance. The noodles were thick and straight, with a glossy finish and a slightly firm texture. The dipping sauce was very hot, made from a mixture of fish, pork bone, and chicken broth, with a rich and creamy flavor. Despite looking light, it was surprisingly rich and creamy. The noodles were from Kanejin Foods, cooked slightly firm, and had a chewy texture that paired well with the dipping sauce. The toppings included chashu, salted chashu, seasoned egg, chicken meatballs, Menma bamboo shoots, and seaweed. The chopped green onions were a mix of white and green onions. The chashu was tender, the salted chashu had a ham-like texture, and the seasoned egg had a gel-like yolk with a strong flavor. The Menma bamboo shoots were thinly sliced and lightly seasoned. The chicken meatballs were unremarkable. Mixing the green onions and fruit vinegar on the table into the dipping sauce added a different flavor experience. After finishing the noodles, I enjoyed the remaining sauce by diluting it with soup. Overall, it was probably one of the top tsukemen shops in Tokyo, but the toppings did not quite reach that level, to be honest. Next time, I might try a regular order instead of the special one. Thank you for the meal! 🚶♂️
