I usually write reviews about ramen, but sometimes I review Hokkaido's gourmet food. The 35th edition is about the famous "Kani Meshi" from Oshamanbe that I ate in Sapporo.
I started this food log to introduce the things I ate while on business trips. I try to eat delicious food or local specialties wherever I go. I have been wanting to visit Oshamanbe in Southern Hokkaido for a while now. I often visit Hakodate, and each time I think about stopping by Oshamanbe, but it's a bit far as it is over 100km away. Oshamanbe's famous dish that you can eat in Sapporo is the "Kani Meshi" from Kanekatsu Kanaya Shokudo.
The classic gourmet dish of Oshamanbe is, of course, the "Kani Meshi" from Kanaya. It was created in 1950, after World War II. During the food shortage period after the war, the founder of Kanaya, Katsujiro Kanaya, was struggling to gather ingredients. His wife suggested boiling the abundant crabs caught in Oshamanbe and selling them at the station. This idea became a huge hit. However, selling whole crabs was messy, and there were complaints from the railway company. Therefore, they developed a new product that could be eaten easily all year round, which was the "Kani Meshi."
For over 70 years, the image of "Oshamanbe = Kani Meshi" has been established. The first "Kani Meshi" from "Kani Meshi Honpo Kanaya" can be eaten at the restaurant in Sapporo, which opened in 2018. I knew about the opening, but I still had a strong desire to try it at the original store in Oshamanbe. However, today I suddenly felt the urge to eat crab rice and decided to go for the first time.
The restaurant is located in Shinkotoni 8-jo 4-chome in Kita-ku, Sapporo. It is located along Yonbandori street where Shinkotoni Shrine is. It is right next to the "Shinkotoni Koban" (Shinkotoni Police Box). There are about 5 parking spaces in front of the store. I am a law-abiding citizen, but I still feel a bit uncomfortable going to a store next to a police box. The parking lot is small and a bit difficult to park in.
I entered the restaurant around 11:30. Although I thought it was a small shop, the interior was surprisingly spacious. There are 4 counter seats and 2 table seats. There were already 2 groups of customers eating. I purchased the "Kani Meshi" for 1,200 yen from the ticket machine and handed it to the staff. Other menu items include "Ankake Yakisoba" and "Kani Cha-han." Takeout is also available.
The "Kani Meshi" arrived in about 3 minutes. When I opened the lid of the wooden rice box, the crab meat was spread all over the rice. I took a bite of the yellow crab meat and rice with chopsticks. It was delicious! The crab meat is stir-fried with bamboo shoots until the moisture is gone. It's not a big chunk of crab, but a fluffy crab mince. The texture of the crab meat and bamboo shoots is exquisite. The seasoning is also good. Additionally, there are fluffy crab meat, shiitake mushrooms, shredded omelette, green peas, and a small plum in the center on top of the rice, making it visually appealing. The sweet and savory seasoned shiitake mushrooms complement the crab meat.
