After finishing up some errands in Ebetsu, I started to feel a bit hungry and coincidentally spotted a ramen sign! I had actually found this place beforehand though (laughs). The location is on the left-hand side as you drive towards Ebetsu on the White Birch Street, after turning right at the intersection with the post office on your right while driving towards Iwamizawa on National Route 12. The restaurant has a typical diner-style appearance with a prominent ramen sign, but it seems like they offer a variety of other menu items as well.
The interior of the restaurant has a nostalgic Showa-era vibe, which can be described as a bit messy and questionable in terms of hygiene (laughs). There is an L-shaped counter surrounding the kitchen, and a raised tatami area on the left side with two 4-person low tables. Since it was an odd time, there were no other customers when I visited.
I sat at the end of the counter and looked at the menu, and to my surprise, the soy sauce ramen was only 550 yen! I had a feeling that it wouldn't be priced at 750 yen like modern ramen places, but this price was quite impressive. The other menu items were also reasonably priced.
I ordered and waited for about 7 minutes while reading a manga (today's choice was "Shura no Mon," a martial arts manga, laughs). When the bowl was brought to me, the first thing that caught my eye was the size. Honestly, I was expecting a traditional bowl with a dragon design on the rim, but it was a slightly more contemporary style with a wide mouth. The size was quite generous, and the variety of toppings was abundant. All of this for 550 yen felt like a great deal.
I tried the soup first, and while it was a simple combination, it was delicious. The base was a strong chicken broth complemented well by the soy sauce flavor. It seemed like they used quite a bit of seasoning, but it enhanced the taste nicely. The saltiness was just right, and there was a subtle richness from the chicken fat. Initially, I thought the soup might be too light based on the color, but it pleasantly surprised me.
The noodles were the typical Sapporo-style noodles from Nishiyama Seimen, medium-thick and wavy. The texture and chewiness were just right, and the cooking was spot on. However, I felt like the amount of noodles was slightly lacking, perhaps because they were too easy to eat (laughs).
The toppings were incredibly abundant with slices of pork, bamboo shoots, wheat gluten, fish cake, boiled egg, seaweed, chopped green onions, etc. The pork slices were substantial and had a good chew to them, making them quite tasty. The other toppings were nothing extraordinary, but the generous amount made the dish impressive.
Overall, I was very satisfied with this ramen for 550 yen. The restaurant may not be the cleanest, and the owner may not be the most friendly, but there is a welcoming atmosphere that makes it easy to visit. I had no expectations or prior information about this place, but I left thinking I wouldn't mind coming back here for a purposeful visit next time. Thank you for the meal.
