On the second day of my trip to Hokkaido on June 23rd, I left Hilton Niseko Village where I was staying at 7 am by rental car, heading towards the sea urchin in Bikuni, Shakotan Peninsula, a famous cherry production area. I drove west on Route 5 from Kutchan, crossed Kutchan Pass, turned right in Kyowa Town, and headed north towards Niki Town in Yoichi District. As I approached Niki Town, I could see cherry orchards with ripe red fruits everywhere. Around 8 am, exactly one hour after departure, I visited the Kasaien fruit orchard's direct sales store for a break. Kasaien had just started cherry picking for the season that morning, and although they usually start selling at 8 am during the season, on the first day, they were still working towards starting sales and shipments in the afternoon. Despite being busy with work, the lady who seemed to be the landlady stopped what she was doing and let me taste about 10 cherries of 3 different varieties. After tasting, I bought a pack of the most delicious Asa-zumi Sato Nishiki 2L with a little extra. After purchasing, I also had the opportunity to tour the cherry orchard located just behind the parking lot. As I was about to return to my car after the tour, the lady brought a gauge to measure the size of cherries and told me, "The Sato Nishiki you purchased is a high-quality 2L, the second from the top." In response to my question about whether the cherry trees in the vinyl houses were grown using forced cultivation, she explained that the purpose of the vinyl sheets in the cherry orchard was not for forced cultivation, but rather for rain and pest protection. Therefore, the vinyl sheets were only used as a roof and one pair of side walls, not covering the entrance where another pair of walls was used without vinyl, making it not a greenhouse. As for the Sato Nishiki cherries, during the drive to Shakotan and even after returning to the hotel, I made sure to eat them. The elegant sweet and sour taste was just as delicious as the original Sato Nishiki from Yamagata prefecture.
