大阪めんま
Founded in 1958 in Hakodate City, Hokkaido, the local convenience store "Hasegawa Store" is famous for its signature dish, the "yakitori bento," which is made in the kitchen inside the store. As of January 2023, the store has 10 locations in Hakodate City, 2 in Hokuto City, and 1 in Nanae Town, all in the vicinity of Hakodate. In Nemuro City, there is a shop called "Taie" that offers original products such as "kalbi bento" and "sagari bento," which are similar to the "yakitori bento" from Hasegawa Store. The "yakitori bento" was first introduced in September 1978. It originated when a drunk customer asked for a bento box, and the store's chairman at the time, Mr. Hasegawa Bun'o, combined rice balls, seaweed, and grilled skewered meat (yakitori) that was being prepared in the kitchen. Interestingly, the yakitori in this dish is made with pork, not chicken, which is a common practice in the southern Hokkaido region. The dish gained nationwide popularity after being featured by the popular band GLAY, who are from Hakodate. I visited the store and ordered the "yakitori bento" with sauce, which is a popular choice. The dish consists of 200g of rice, seaweed, and three skewers of pork yakitori, all for 499 yen. The pork had a nice balance of fat and a firm texture, and the sauce was rich and savory, making it a delicious meal. Overall, it was a satisfying experience, and I look forward to trying the salt or miso flavor next time.
