Before heading to a business meeting in Osaka, I had lunch at a Chinese restaurant called Morimoto in Osaka Shinsaibashi, located on the basement floor of a mixed-use building. There was a line of mostly office workers, with two women or one woman waiting in line. Clearly, people are sensitive to delicious food. When the restaurant opened at 11:30, the line smoothly moved into the restaurant. I was lucky to be seated at the third-to-last table. After looking at the menu, I decided to order the weekly special, beef harami stir-fry for 1350 yen. I also ordered a medium-sized draft beer for 650 yen, and added a mini mapo tofu for 400 yen, which the couple next to me had ordered. In about 7-8 minutes, I received a generous plate of harami stir-fry for lunch, along with the draft beer, and later added mapo tofu. The meal also came with egg soup, pickles, and almond jelly. The cost performance was incredibly high! The plate was filled with harami stir-fry, enoki mushrooms, shimeji mushrooms, king oyster mushrooms, and chingensai, making it look even more luxurious than expected. The flavor of the harami and oyster sauce stir-fry was light yet meaty and delicious. The standout dish was the mapo tofu. I have tried authentic mapo tofu at many places, but the homemade bean paste and spicy oil used here had a complex and outstanding flavor. It was wonderful. The spiciness wasn't too strong, making it a delightful dish for adults. The almond jelly dessert, which won the Gold Award at the 13th All-Japan Chinese Cuisine Competition in 2021, was also delicious. While dinner can cost around 10,000 yen for a course, having a high-quality Chinese meal at a reasonable price and in a casual setting for lunch is much appreciated. I would love to try more dim sum and other dishes in the future.
