I went to a very popular set meal restaurant in Osaka. The spacious interior, like an old-fashioned cafeteria, was packed with customers. The line continued to grow even after that. The kitchen, which is as spacious as the seating area, is fully visible, and the Osaka mothers were bustling around preparing dishes one after another. There is no specific menu, and you choose your favorite side dishes from the various options lined up on the counter, then you receive rice and miso soup before sitting at your designated table to eat. It reminded me of a nostalgic school cafeteria. I chose simmered mackerel, nikujaga (meat and potato stew), and dashimaki tamago (rolled omelette) which they cooked after I ordered. It came with rice and miso soup for 1,300 yen. It was so delicious and satisfying that I finished it in no time. The white rice is famous for being delicious, but considering the incredible number of customers they are feeding, the quality is truly impressive. However, what's even more irresistible is the variety of side dishes. The homey, rich flavors, the sweet and savory simmered mackerel was tender and juicy, the beef in the nikujaga was perfectly tender with a great texture and flavor. And the dashimaki tamago, which I never thought would be a substantial side dish, proved me wrong. It's hard to decide which dish to eat as each one makes you want more rice. The cheerful atmosphere is also very welcoming, with cold tea in a kettle, delicious rice refills, sashimi, and a variety of side dishes like mentaiko (spicy cod roe), making it a place that seems able to meet any request. If I worked nearby, I would probably end up coming here almost every day.

◆Visit Date Information on Tabelog 3.59 Top 100 Restaurants 2021◆About the RestaurantThis place is run by someone who has been selected as one of the 100 respected Japanese people, and it is known for its rice dishes. It has a cafeteria-like atmosphere where you can choose various side dishes yourself.◆ImpressionsThe interior atmosphere is very much like a local cafeteria, to the point where it was almost empty around 10 a.m. on weekdays and the air conditioning was not very effective, making it quite hot. The service was cafeteria-style. I believe that the best time to visit would be during off-peak hours, as it is likely to be crowded during breakfast and lunch times. At this time, the rice balls were already sold out, and as I was also planning to eat later, I enjoyed a delicious meal of rice and miso soup. I wished that the famous white rice would be served in a bowl, and overall, the prices were quite high for a cafeteria.◆Ordered Items (Food Only)✔︎ Miso Soup 100 yen✔︎ Packed Rice 200 yen◆Remarks◆Notes※Information such as Michelin, Top 100 Restaurants, Gault Millau may include past or current information.※Prices include tax.⭐️Rating Criteria⭐️3 or less: Satisfied with just one visit⭐️3.5: Good, somewhat recommended⭐️4: Very delicious, highly recommended (would recommend to friends)⭐️4.5: Amazing/Will visit again/Definitely recommended (would confidently recommend to food enthusiasts)⭐️5: Ultimate delight/Will visit for life/Highly, highly recommended (would recommend to all)※Ratings are given based on the level of satisfaction with the price. Finally, I was able to go to Geko Tei! I had wanted to go before, but it was sold out twice when I tried to go, so I couldn't get in. I heard that the food is delicious, so I went based on a recommendation from a friend. I think the salmon is a must-try!

On a regular day around 12 o'clock, I was in the mood for a set meal, so I was thinking about it and then I thought, "Ah!! Gekotei!!". But I heard that it had closed, so I asked a friend about the new restaurant run by the person who used to cook at Gekotei, and I went there for the first time! There were about 8 people waiting in line, and I waited for almost 20 minutes. More customers kept coming in later. Inside, it was crowded! As always, I tend to choose more dishes than usual, and today was no exception. We chose ★ Tamagoyaki - not much flavor, but tasty as it is ★ Teriyaki Buri - rich flavor, plump and juicy meat inside ★ Oden egg, thick tofu - quite ordinary ★ Hijiki - strong flavor ★ Simmered Karei - just right, very delicious ♡ (probably the 2nd best today) ★ Ebi Fry - delicious even when cold, a bit cheap but the meat is firm and the batter is crispy (probably the best today) ★ Tonjiru - hot and hearty, lots of ingredients, delicious miso ★ Shijimi miso soup - plenty of shijimi, delicious ★ Ginzari white rice - very soft and sticky (I don't like soft white rice, so I don't think the rice here is delicious for rice lovers). It's really a matter of personal preference, but since I don't like soft white rice, I don't go for the rice, but I enjoy choosing my own dishes the most (*ˊᵕˋ*)ノ" Refills were free!! There are plenty of side dishes to choose from, so you can match them to your mood of the day. It's also nice that they are open from the morning. I definitely want to go back again!!! The total cost for the items on that day was ¥2,300! Super cheap(´⊙ω⊙`)??? Thank you for the meal (*ᴗ͈ˬᴗ͈)⁾⁾⁾

On a holiday morning, I visited "Gekotei" in Terachi-cho, Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture as an extra edition. The owner of this restaurant is known for cooking delicious white rice in the hearth and has the nickname "Rice Cooking Hermit". He was summoned by the government of the People's Republic of China to work as a rice cooking artisan in China. I heard about this place a while back, but he left for China around that time and I couldn't visit. Recently, he has returned to Japan and is cooking rice energetically in Sakai City. The restaurant was also featured on a TV show called "Delicious Restaurant", which reignited my desire to visit. I had the opportunity to stay in Osaka, so I decided to visit Sakai City by car, thinking that I could make it to the restaurant by its opening time at 8 am. [Today's Order] - White Rice ¥200 - Salmon Onigiri ¥150 - Tamagoyaki (Japanese omelette) ¥250 - Salted Mackerel ¥400 - Miso Soup ¥100 Total: ¥1,100 I visited for breakfast instead of a morning meal and ordered a luxurious breakfast totaling ¥1,100. The tamagoyaki was the most popular side dish and it was indeed delicious, with a strong sweet and savory flavor. The salted mackerel had a great balance of fat and was incredibly tasty. And now, the long-awaited white rice. Each grain of rice was firm and stood out, holding plenty of moisture. As you chew, the sweetness of the rice gradually increases. The salmon onigiri had just the right amount of saltiness, mixed with flaked salmon, making a simple yet delicious onigiri. Finally, the white rice cooked by the hermit. Thank you for the feast! See you next time! "Have a good day♪"

The shiny and sweet, plump rice was delicious at this restaurant in Teramachi, Osaka. I visited for the first time and was seated immediately on a Saturday at 10:30 am. The shop had a simple and plain atmosphere. I ordered the silver rice and simmered flounder, which were both delicious. It seemed like all dishes were being served in takeout containers, perhaps due to COVID-19.

Visited on May 15th at 11:30 am. Unfortunately, they only had tarako as a side dish, so I had salted rice balls and seaweed miso soup. The rice balls were a bit cold but tasted good. After paying, I saw they had added egg rolls, which was disappointing. I will try to go earlier next time.

I stayed in Sakai and decided to have breakfast at the famous Geko-tei. When I visited, I thought there would be a line, but there were only two groups inside! However, my joy was short-lived as they were almost sold out, with only onigiri and a few other items available for sale. - Order: 4 onigiri, mysterious beans, dried fish & grated daikon, miso soup - Taste: The rice was deliciously chewy as expected from Geko-tei. - Impression: If I have the chance to visit again, I would go early in the morning to have the Geko-tei rice with fish. It was delicious! Thank you for the meal!

This is a restaurant that was featured on a TV show. We arrived at 8:45 and found parking available in the coin parking lot next to the store. The inside of the store was almost full, but we managed to sit together at a shared table. You can choose your dishes by picking from the variety of rice and side dishes displayed on the table, then pay at the counter and eat in the store or take it to go. I ordered "white rice (pack)," "salted rice ball," and "miso soup," while my friend ordered "chirashi sushi," "salted rice ball," "simmered mackerel," and "miso soup." We sat at a shared table with another customer and enjoyed our meal. The "white rice" had a perfect softness and sweetness that spread in your mouth as you chewed. The "salted rice ball" enhanced the sweetness of the rice even more by adding salt. I was impressed by how delicious rice can be when cooked with such expertise. It was very delicious. Thank you for the meal. We will definitely go back again.

Visited at 9:00 AM. Finally managed to get in on the third attempt. The previous two times, there was a sign saying "Sold out". The dimly lit interior had only four tables with four chairs each. It was cramped. The rice and side dishes were all packed in plastic containers for takeout. It seemed to be a system where you choose your preferred side dishes. I wasn't too excited, but I ordered the grilled cod roe, simmered flounder, and miso soup. Cold rice is never delicious. Even when microwaved, it was no good. The seasoning of the simmered flounder was good. The miso soup was too thick and salty. It was quite disappointing considering my high expectations. Is it even worth paying 200 yen for parking?!

Rice x2, Tamagoyaki, Simmered Fish - 850 yen The simmered flounder had a taste that made me think it was delicious after just one bite. I know it's a bit vulgar, but when poured over rice, it seemed like I could eat it forever, so I had a second helping of rice. The tamagoyaki was as delicious as I expected, full of dashi flavor. The only downside was that the rice wasn't hot enough to eat. I will definitely come back.

※After September 2022, the restaurant is temporarily operating in a different location due to renovations. They are serving a special dish called "Flounder and Tuna Set Meal" (unofficial name). Recently, it seems like my rice cooker at home, which is about 5 years old, is not keeping the rice warm for more than a day. The temporary location near Furorai-ken also operates on a shared seating system. It feels like they are renting out a bar, with the usual side dishes displayed on the counter. We were seated on the first floor, but it seems like there is also a kitchen and seating on the second floor. The tuna sashimi lacked the boldness I usually enjoy, but the taste was still delicious. If it were at an izakaya, it would have cost over 800 yen, so I have no complaints. And then there's my favorite simmered flounder. I particularly like the body part, carefully removing the flaky meat from the bones to eat. I had decided to limit myself to only one extra bowl of rice, and I was able to stick to that rule and stop at two bowls. Next time, I'll try the second floor. 😉

This place has been closed since September 1, 2022, but is currently operating as a sublease at Standin bar en nearby! Located in Sakai-ku, Sakai-shi, Osaka Prefecture, 1-2-2 Higashi, 8080-9755-0477【Hankai Line, between Hanadaguchi and Ojokoji, right near Sugawara Shrine】Check the owner's Instagram @kanameoga for more information. I was invited by a friend to have breakfast together, and we headed towards Teraji Station on the Hankai Line, swaying on the rattling train... How peaceful~ I thought I should check the latest reviews, and when I did, I found information suggesting that the place might have moved. I quickly checked on Instagram and called the listed phone number, only to find out that the store has been closed since 9/1 and is currently operating as a sublease at a new location. It was a relief to have checked! I got off at Ojokoji Station, two stops before Teraji Station as planned, and walked about 3-4 minutes to the new location (^^) It's a bar located in the so-called back-alley drinking district, operating as a sublease. It was around 10:00 on a Sunday, and there were 2 groups waiting in line. Unfortunately, we had to wait for about 30 minutes. According to my friend, the previous location was larger with a wider variety of side dishes and hardly any waiting time, but due to the limited space at the new location, it couldn't be helped ^^; Rice is refillable for free, and prices are as follows: One cup of rice for 150 yen, miso soup for 100 yen, sashimi for 500 yen, grilled or boiled fish for 400 yen, small side dishes for 100-200 yen, rolled omelette for 150 yen, fried food for 300 yen, and each item in the oden for 100 yen. You can go all out or enjoy rice with just one dish! I wanted to enjoy the rice, so I chose a light meal of tofu, rolled omelette, raw egg, grilled mackerel with salt, clam soup, and rice (´∀`*) My husband and friend enjoyed oden and sashimi, among other dishes♪ The freshly cooked rice had each grain standing out, so delicious~☆ Yes, I recommend the style of enjoying rice with one dish! The sashimi was of surprisingly high quality considering the price of 500 yen♪ How you eat it is up to your preference o(^_^)o Thank you for the meal!

I came to visit the ancient tombs in Sakai and had breakfast at a legendary silver rice bowl shop. Since September 2022, they have been operating in a temporary location, which feels like borrowing a space from a bar. It's about a 10-minute walk from Sakai Higashi Station and the original shop. Although there is a second floor, the capacity is small, so be prepared to wait outside the shop. The style is to take your choice of side dishes and then receive miso soup and rice. The popular rolled omelette was gone by the time I finished eating, so timing is quite important. I chose grilled amberjack and mentaiko with spinach. The temporary shop apparently has fewer side dish options. The star of the show is the silver rice bowl. It is shiny and soft when you put it in your mouth, with a good texture and sweetness when chewed. And of course, it has a good aroma. It's definitely different from your average set meal. It's also nice that you can get a refill of this delicious rice. At the main shop, you could choose the miso soup, but here they only had clam miso soup. I love clam miso soup, so I enjoyed it. The side dishes didn't have any particular standout features, so the main attractions are definitely the silver rice bowl and the miso soup. It was a good breakfast.

I love Gekotei, a silver chari restaurant, with their familiar tuna sashimi and shrimp fry ❤️ Today we had grilled yellowtail and nikujaga. Ah, I want to eat it every day ❤️ Gekotei's shrimp fry is really delicious! The tartar sauce is exquisite! Today's tuna was also amazing! ※ As of September 2022, the nearby store is open ※ For details, check the store's Instagram! @kanameoga

Had lunch at Geko-tei, known for their delicious food. Ordered my favorite side dishes with rice and miso soup. Chose grilled salmon, simmered flounder, rolled omelette, pickles, thick fried tofu with boiled eggs, rice, pork miso soup, and clam soup. It was Wednesday, so miso soup was only 100 yen. The meal was good, but not mind-blowing. I enjoyed the grilled salmon and simmered flounder more than the rice. The total bill for two people was around 2,000 yen.

I heard about a restaurant that serves delicious rice and decided to visit. There were various side dishes lined up, some freshly made, but the shrimp fry had become a bit tough after some time. (However, it still tasted delicious.) In addition to the dishes in the photo, there were many other options like tuna sashimi and oden. When you enter the restaurant, you pick your favorite side dishes with a tray, then sit down and receive a bill. This time it cost around ¥1,400. All the side dishes were exquisite, perfectly complementing the rice, and there was no disappointment. Lastly, we received onigiri as a souvenir, which was also delicious even when cold. There are paid parking lots nearby, so it was not a problem.

A restaurant famous for its incredibly delicious rice, known as a typical one-bowl eatery. You choose your favorite side dishes, order rice and soup, and your personalized set meal is ready. This restaurant is very well-known, but some people underestimated it, saying, "It's just famous for the unique one-bowl eatery system, and it's expensive." However, their perception changed in an instant. The exterior looks elegant for a one-bowl eatery. But as soon as you enter the restaurant, a different world unfolds. On the left, there is a huge kitchen where many people are working diligently. The open kitchen is impressive. To the right, almost all tables are full of people enjoying their meals. The kitchen seems even larger. This is amazing!! Feeling slightly overwhelmed, the first thing to do is sanitize your hands. Then, you pick up an aluminum tray. First, you choose small side dishes from the refrigerator. Fresh eggs and pickles look tempting. And there are even appetizing sashimi slices. Is this really a one-bowl eatery? Moving on to the main dishes... I was amazed. The portion sizes are unbelievably huge. The simmered yellowtail looks like it could be too much for one person. And every dish looks delicious. This is no ordinary one-bowl eatery! The braised fish collar and snapper head soup are unexpected for this type of restaurant. I heard it was expensive, but now I understand why. The quality is outstanding. It all looks so delicious, but I'm on a diet, so I reluctantly choose the grilled mackerel with salt. I decide not to pick any other side dishes. The key to enjoying a one-bowl eatery is to stick to "one main dish." One soup, one side dish, and small side dishes. Just like a hotel breakfast, don't pile up your tray with too many items. I order rice in a smaller portion due to my diet. The miso soup is tempting, but I resist and choose a smaller portion of rice. The rice is shiny and appealing. Many people are getting seconds, and I understand why. The turnover is quick, so the side dishes are freshly made. Even the egg and pickles are of high quality. However, the grilled mackerel with salt that I reluctantly chose is honestly average, lacking in oiliness, and feels a bit overpriced. I should have chosen the simmered dish after all. Damn this diet. As I enjoy my meal, the bill arrives promptly. Grilled mackerel with salt 400, egg 100, pickles 150, rice 150, miso soup 100. Total: 900 yen. The price is a bit high for a one-bowl eatery, but considering the quality, it's worth it. This place is amazing. It belongs to a different league, even though it's a one-bowl eatery. Ah, but I should have chosen the yellowtail after all. I'll definitely come back! By the time I leave the restaurant, it's close to noon, and there is a line forming. *There are several coin parking lots nearby.

Today's lunch was in Sakai City. I went to support a local Sakai restaurant that is still open despite the pandemic. I visited a set meal restaurant called "Ginshariya Gekotei" in Shinzaika, Sakai City. It had been a while since I ate at a restaurant, as I have been having a lot of bento boxes recently. I had "simmered mackerel," "simmered flounder," "shrimp fry," dried daikon radish, rolled omelette, oden (daikon, fried burdock root), freeze-dried tofu, potato salad, clam soup, and miso soup. I also received complimentary simmered dried fish with soy sauce. This place, "Gekotei," serves delicious Ginshari rice cooked following the teachings of a rice cooking hermit. It is a set meal style restaurant where you can choose your favorite side dishes. The freshly cooked and shiny Ginshari rice is the best. I especially like the simmered dishes here, especially the simmered flounder! Today, I also tried the simmered mackerel, and it was really good. The Ginshari rice and side dishes at Gekotei were all incredibly delicious!

☆Morning Breakfast Trip with Mrs. (Osaka Prefecture, Sakai City)! ⇒ On the way to the Bon festival and visiting the grave, we stopped for breakfast. We arrived just in time to find the last two seats available, as there were already about 20 people in line. Close call! ・Parking is available at a nearby coin parking lot! $ Order! * "Rice" 150 yen x 3... 3.0: It's great that all sizes - large, medium, and small - are the same price. But today, the rice lacked luster and the water didn't taste very good. * "Clam Miso Soup" 200 yen... 3.0: I still can't taste the flavor of the clams, which is disappointing. * "Tuna Sashimi" 500 yen... 3.5: The freshness is always outstanding! This is my favorite. * "Grilled Salmon" 500 yen... 3.3: It's perfect with soy sauce, making it a great breakfast dish! * "Tofu" 200 yen... 3.3: Made by "Oda Tofu Shop"! It's not as firm as cotton tofu, but it has a nice silky texture. * "Grilled Spicy Cod Roe and Spinach" 200 yen... 3.3: Another great addition to the breakfast! The slightly spicy cod roe is a nice touch. * "Beef (Sukiyaki Flavor)"... 3.3: The sweet and savory taste goes well with the soy sauce seasoning, making it perfect for flavor variation. * "Tamagoyaki" 200 yen... 3.0: It's not seasoned, so soy sauce goes well with it too. Closing Thoughts: With this, I conclude my experience at Gekotei. Thank you for listening. I appreciate your likes, saving the restaurant, and following. Feel free to leave comments or questions. Thank you all for your continued support.
