Today, for the first time in about 10 years, I visited Hokkaido! Sushi? Seafood bowl? Curry? Genghis Khan? No, no, first things first, it has to be eel! There are quite a few eel restaurants in Hokkaido. Among them, my first eel experience was at a place with a straightforward name, "Sapporo Unagiya." It's about a 3-minute walk from Shinkawa Station. It was a weekday, but customers started coming in right after the opening. It seems to be run by a family, as there were many staff members working efficiently. The place was clean and relatively spacious. Eel dishes are quite pricey. Hokkaido is quite expensive, huh? This time, I chose the special eel bowl. The eel of the day was from Miyazaki. They mainly use eels from Kagoshima or Miyazaki, which are flown in and prepared in the morning. It was steamed and charcoal-grilled without sauce. The order included liver sashimi and pickles. It arrived in about 12 minutes. The eel was large, about 4 pieces. The steaming was shallow, and the grilling was decent. The bowl had plenty of rice. When I tried it, the eel had a lightly cooked texture, tender and easily falling apart. It had no small bones and had a moist texture. The head part seemed slightly undercooked, but the tail was fluffy with a good mouthfeel. It had a moderate fattiness and umami flavor. The charcoal aroma was subtle, with a slight grilled fish-like flavor that was noticeable. The sauce was slightly spicy with not much richness. It had more acidity than saltiness, which wasn't quite to my liking. The rice was slightly firm with a dry texture. The sauce wasn't overpowering, and the balance with the eel was good. The pickles were delicious! The cabbage pickle was fresh. The liver sashimi was average. The liver was okay. The sansho pepper had a good aroma, a moderate numbing sensation, and was of high quality. Honestly, the cost performance wasn't great. It was filling, but at this price point for a family-run business, it's quite something. This being my first eel experience in Hokkaido, it's hard to say, but if Hokkaido leans this way, I'm a bit worried about the future. The grilling and sauce weren't to my liking. The staff's service was good. Payment was cash only. Thank you for the meal!
