In July, summer has finally arrived in Hokkaido. It was somewhat humid today, so I had "Hiyashi Ramen" for lunch at "Sumo Chaya Keitaen" restaurant.
The restaurant is directly connected to Chikaho. It is located on the basement floor of Sapporo North Plaza, next to the 8th exit "Sapporo Grand Hotel", in a dining area surrounded by "Yamakado" and "Soup Curry Shabazou".
It's been quite a while since I last visited this restaurant. I used to call it the "sumo restaurant" and only now learned its official name. It turns out it's owned by former yokozuna "Kitanofuji" (former stablemaster of the Kyushu stable).
The interior of the restaurant is all traditional Japanese style. If you look closely, you'll see sumo wrestlers' handprints and sumo paintings on the walls. Smoking is allowed without any specific smoking area, which is surprising given the current times.
As expected from a sumo chaya, the menu is quite hearty with reasonable prices. They offer a variety of dishes like hot pot, steak, beef bowl, and set meals, along with noodle dishes such as "Chanko Ramen", "Hiyashi Ramen (limited to summer)", and "Chanko Nabe Yaki Udon (limited to winter)".
It's mentioned that the taste is based on a 50-year-old recipe.
By the way, in Hokkaido, "Hiyashi Chuka" is called "Hiyashi Ramen".
When I ordered the Hiyashi Ramen, I was given a choice between salt and soy sauce. Salt in Hiyashi Ramen? That was new to me. I chose soy sauce.
Soon, the Hiyashi Ramen arrived in an iron pot. I dug in immediately.
The toppings included ham, bean sprouts, kaiware radish, wakame seaweed, pickled ginger, and white sesame seeds. And surprisingly, fried tofu? It was my first time having fried tofu as a ramen topping, but it was surprisingly delicious with a sweet flavor.
The noodles were medium-thick and curly, with a nice firmness from being rinsed in cold water. The vinegar soy sauce dressing was quite tangy. And there was more sauce than I expected for Hiyashi Ramen. It was refreshing and tasty, but there was a lot of it.
This Hiyashi Ramen had quite a generous portion. It was almost like a serving for two people. Maybe because of the large serving, the taste became a bit monotonous towards the end.
Nevertheless, I managed to finish it. Indeed, "Hiyashi Ramen is the best in summer".
It was great!
