Located between Tanukikoji 5-chome and 6-chome, on the second floor of an old building, is a restaurant run by a Thai chef. I have tried to go for lunch several times before, but it was always closed. Finally, I was able to go this time.
- Gapao Gai Rice
This dish consists of minced chicken stir-fried with basil, coriander, and other herbs, with a sweet and savory seasoning. It is flavored with nam pla. The rice is long-grain Thai rice, fluffy and perfect to soak up the flavorful sauce of the Gapao. It is quite spicy, but when eaten with a fried egg with a runny yolk, it becomes milder. It was very delicious.
- Gaeng Keow Wan
This is a green curry with chicken. The rice is also Thai rice. The soup is light, with ingredients such as meat, eggplant, red bell pepper, and plenty of thinly sliced bamboo shoots. Compared to other green curries I have tried, this one has a slightly less coconut flavor and sweetness. Instead, the flavor of nam pla is stronger. It has a unique aroma, spicy and rich in umami, very delicious. Even though I usually eat green curry as a soup without rice, this one made me want to eat it with rice!
Both dishes came with seaweed soup and basil seed drink. The seaweed soup is light and a good palate cleanser after spicy dishes. The basil seed drink has a slightly slimy and chewy texture, with a subtly sweet and refreshing taste. It was a nice dessert after the meal. However, the appearance of the drink was a bit off-putting for my companion. Both dishes were delicious, but I was particularly impressed by the Gaeng Keow Wan. My companion, who isn't a fan of coconut, also really enjoyed it. Other dishes on the menu looked tempting too. I would definitely like to go back to this restaurant.
