Just outside the ticket gates of the municipal subway Susukino Station, there is a standing bar in the hall with stairs leading up to the ground level. Passing by "Haikara-ya" in the hall, you will find this standing bar behind a door. It used to allow smoking, but as of my visit in April 2023, it has become non-smoking. The passageway looks a bit worn out, but the shop itself is bright and clean. Across from it is another shop called "Chotto Baa Plus," where you can enjoy Chotto Baa's menu while seated for an additional 300 yen. Stepping through the vinyl curtain into the standing bar, you'll find a counter that can accommodate about 10 people, with a TV available. The rule is to order a drink along with one snack. In Fukuoka, baseball broadcasts usually feature Hawks games, so it was rare to watch a baseball game other than Hawks while drinking. However, to my surprise, the opposing team was the Hawks (laughs). The other customers were local middle-aged men who were fans of the Nippon-Ham Fighters. In many ways, I was the only one feeling like I was away (laughs).
- Marinated Salmon Sashimi - Norway (350 yen): Thick and large slices of moist marinated salmon. It offers a satisfying eating experience for the price.
- Squid Salted Innards (250 yen): Another dish that offers more volume than its price suggests. A classic snack.
- Draft Beer - Sapporo Classic (450 yen): The beer was cold and delicious. Recently, I've started to enjoy beer, which has expanded my drinking options. But from the second glass onwards, I start craving something sweet, almost like juice.
- Byce Sour (400 yen): You get two glasses worth of Byce Sour for 400 yen. However, compared to other places where I've tried Byce Sour, this one seems to have considerably less shochu. It seems like it's designed for you to add the middle (200 yen) portion, as the first glass can be too strong to drink easily! The second glass was almost like a plum soda, with a nostalgic and delicious flavor. Those who prefer stronger alcohol may opt to add the middle portion, making it 300 yen per glass. Either way, it's affordable. This standing bar offers a surprisingly wide range of menu options, making it fun to choose both drinks and snacks. Despite feeling like I drank quite a bit, the total bill came to only 1550 yen. The "Chotto Baa Plus" side also has a TV. There is a normal door instead of a vinyl curtain on the plus side, but you can still hear the laughter from over there. It's a convenient place for standing drinking, where you don't have to worry about catching the last train. As a carefree traveler, it's quite enjoyable. By the way, on this day, the Hawks won with a walk-off home run by Tōru Aka. I felt a bit awkward amidst the middle-aged men's uproar (laughs). PayPay is accepted here.
