I casually entered the restaurant. The staff seemed surprised, probably because I was a new face in what seemed like a regular spot for regular customers. The restaurant was quite ordinary, but the appetizer was a bit unusual... it was shrimp sashimi. I also ordered octopus tempura, beef harami stir-fry, chicken tataki, and a few other dishes that I now forget. (Of course, I forgot to take pictures too.) I wanted to order squid since I was in Hakodate, but they said they didn't have any today, which was disappointing. I had seen squid fishing with torches just last night... I really wanted to try it! I started with a draft beer and then switched to whiskey highballs. I was enjoying the food and drinks at a leisurely pace, but when two young people sat next to me and started smoking heavily, I couldn't stand the secondhand smoke and decided to leave abruptly. The owner was a friendly middle-aged man, and I would have liked to stay longer, but...

This shop used to operate under the name "Chikuzen" in the past, so it is one of the long-standing shops in Hakodate where you can eat motsunabe. Since the owner is from Kyushu, the taste of the hot pot is authentic. Motsunabe comes in soy sauce and miso flavors, but I personally prefer soy sauce, so I ordered that today. The motsu itself is delicious, but the vegetables like cabbage and leeks soaked in the soup are also very tasty! I always end up adding extra vegetables. And for the finishing touch, I had champon noodles. Thank you for the meal.

We started with a sashimi platter featuring fresh seafood, including live abalone (all for under 1,000 yen!), chicken tataki, and the main dish of motsunabe. The motsunabe was incredibly delicious, even surprising us Fukuoka locals with its quality. We were able to choose between soy sauce and miso flavors for the motsunabe, and we opted for the recommended light soy sauce. You could order just one serving, but it was so tasty that we ended up adding another serving and changing to a larger pot. For dessert, we added curry-flavored udon noodles, which were surprisingly light and delicious. Even though it was cold outside, I would crave motsunabe all year round. A must-visit restaurant when in Hakodate!
