I visited in August 2010 during lunchtime. Whenever I visit Asahikawa, I always make sure to stop by here. I have dined at the counter at night before, but that was a long time ago, so this time I will review the lunch menu. The highlight of "Takiya" is definitely the lunch menu. The cost performance is excellent. You can't find this quality for this price in Sapporo. The lunch menu consists of four options: A, B, C, D, all priced at 1050 yen. Each set comes with a light salad, chawanmushi, miso soup, and coffee (or roasted green tea) after the meal.
A Lunch (Sushi nigiri set?) includes all the main types of sushi. I remember there were about 15 pieces (or maybe 10 pieces?), but unfortunately, there is no uni or chutoro included. Considering the price of 1050 yen, it's understandable. The rice is relatively large, the sushi is light and fluffy, slightly warm. The vinegar flavor is not too strong, which might not suit everyone's taste. But for the price and the quality, I think it's satisfying.
B Lunch (Chirashi) is the most cost-effective in my opinion. It comes in a black lacquered bucket with a variety of toppings on slightly warm vinegared rice. It includes tuna, sweet shrimp, surf clam, squid, octopus, crab, ikura, flying fish roe, white fish, scallop, sweet omelet, and possibly more. The rice portion is slightly large, so it might be too much for those with small appetites.
C Lunch (Tendon + 5 pieces of sushi) includes a tempura bowl with a large shrimp, shishito peppers, squid, eggplant tempura, and sweet sauce on rice. The sushi includes tuna, white fish, scallop, squid, and sweet shrimp. The quality of the sushi may not be as good as A or B lunch. It's a good choice if you want both a bowl dish and sushi at a sushi restaurant.
D Lunch (Katsudon + 5 pieces of sushi) has a delicious katsudon. It's like a soba restaurant's katsudon, with a crispy coating and sweet and savory flavor. It's served hot, so be careful not to burn your mouth. It's a substantial meal with both the katsudon and sushi, so consider your appetite before ordering.
Salad: Mostly mayonnaise-based salads like potato salad and macaroni salad. The lettuce is a bit wilted, so don't expect too much from the salad.
Chawanmushi: Sweet and soft, with ingredients like bamboo shoots, shiitake mushrooms, chestnuts, small shrimp, and chicken.
Overall, I highly recommend A or B lunch for first-time visitors.
