Visited on Monday, March 7, 2022, around 1 pm. Located a 7-minute walk from Hakodate Station, this restaurant is on the second floor of the Ekini Market, which has a live squid fishing pond. I visited for the first time to try their famous 550 yen donburi. There are two entrances to the restaurant. They open at 6:30 am and close around 1:30 pm. The spacious interior has table seating and sunken kotatsu-style seating. The 550 yen donburi comes in six varieties: Gomoku don, Crab don, Salmon and Chicken don, Genghis Khan don, Squid Three-Masu Pickled don, and Squid Sashimi don, all inclusive of tax. In addition to these, they offer luxurious seafood donburi, set meals, sashimi, and squid with miso paste, making it a great place to enjoy drinks from early in the morning. As it was close to closing time, there were only two other customers when I arrived. I was very hungry as I hadn't eaten anything all morning. Unfortunately, the first place I visited had no squid, and I missed the chance to eat there. There were only shrimp swimming in the fishing pond on the first floor, no squid. I decided to order two 550 yen donburi as they were affordable and the service was quick, arriving in about 5 minutes. The staff, noticing I was alone but ordered two dishes, seemed puzzled. I chose the Gomoku don and Squid Sashimi don. They came with miso soup and yellow pickles, which was a nice touch. The portion size of each donburi was slightly small, but it was acceptable. The most popular Gomoku don had not 5 but 9 different toppings, including tuna, scallop, crab, salmon flakes, salmon roe, egg, salmon, sweet shrimp, and flying fish. Each topping was only a piece, but the presentation and taste were excellent. The rice was not vinegared, just plain rice. The Squid Sashimi don had ginger as an accent and the flavor of nori was also good. The amount of squid was generous. I was hoping for more transparent squid sashimi, but I assume they didn't have live squid that day. Nevertheless, I enjoyed every bite. In conclusion, this restaurant is a great place for a light breakfast or quick bite. Even though I ordered two dishes, the total cost was only 1100 yen. The concept is to make it accessible for locals in Hakodate, and they do not accept PayPay payments. Check out their Instagram @moritapan7 for videos of the restaurant.
