I operate a curry blog centered around the 23 wards of Tokyo. Tokyo Curry Magazine, found at tokyocurrymagazine.com, covers my curry adventures in Tokyo. I recently visited Kaviar, a renowned European-style curry restaurant and one of the top 100 curry restaurants in Tokyo, in Jimbocho. It was nearing the end of lunchtime, so getting a table was easy. Since its establishment in 1982, Kaviar has been maintaining its taste by continuously adjusting its sauce based on an original recipe.
The menu at Kaviar includes beef curry, chicken curry, cheese curry, vegetable curry, mixed curry, seafood curry, pork curry, clam curry, scallop curry, shrimp curry, mixed meat curry, and combination curries with varying levels of spiciness: mild, medium, hot, and a kids' option.
Although I was tempted to try the beef curry, I opted for something different and ordered the vegetable and clam curry from the lunch menu. The restaurant offers various seating options including table and counter seats. Having counter seats allows even solo diners to be seated quickly, which enhances turnover.
On the table, there are condiments like Fukujinzuke, rakkyo, and salt. The vegetable and clam curry at Kaviar is served in a unique square plate resembling a lunch box, with plenty of rice generously topped with cheese. The combination plate features two types of curry with vegetables and clams. The potatoes are steamed and served with the skin intact, which can be eaten along with the delicious butter provided. I personally recommend melting the butter into the rice, which enhances the flavor.
Although I ordered the medium-spicy curry, it tasted quite sweet, which made me wonder if I've become desensitized to spiciness! The thick and sticky sauce goes perfectly with the melted cheese on the rice, creating a visually appealing dish. The vegetables, including deep-fried eggplant, pumpkin, green beans, and thickly sliced mushrooms, were all excellent.
While the base sauce for both the vegetable and clam curries is the same, eating them together enhances the taste with a combination of sea flavors and European-style curry. It was a satisfying experience revisiting Kaviar after a long time. Next time, I'll definitely try the beef curry!
