I was just about to leave when I saw the line at the entrance of Byodoin Temple. I decided to join the line. I ordered the recommended Uji dashi and herring tea soba set. The restaurant was full, so I expected to wait, but my order arrived quickly. The herring was delicious, especially when eaten with the soba.

When my family visited Kyoto, we decided to make a reservation before heading to the restaurant near the Byodoin Temple, as it was expected to be crowded during the day. We arrived at 11:30 and it turned out to be a good decision because the restaurant was fully packed. I heard that their specialty is the tea soba, so I ordered the Tekkadon and tea soba set, while my sister ordered the meat bowl as she doesn't eat soba. The Tekkadon was recommended on the menu and when it arrived, it looked like a regular Tekkadon. But when I took a bite, I was pleasantly surprised by the thick slices of tuna piled high on top. It was so delicious and there was no worry about having leftover rice like with some seafood bowls. The tea soba had a nice tea aroma when I ate it, and I found it easier to eat compared to regular soba noodles. The staff seemed busy but they were still polite and helpful when we had questions.

I love Pacific herring so I chose the Pacific herring soba for 1050 yen! The soba had a subtle matcha flavor, but the broth was so gentle and delicious that I could drink it endlessly! The Pacific herring was so big that it almost overflowed from the plate, and the flesh was tender and flavorful. Maybe you can feel the matcha flavor more in the zaru soba...? I usually have cold noodles, but it was nice to have a warm one for a change.

From Sanjusangendo Temple to Byodoin Temple. It's amazing how crowded it gets once it becomes a World Heritage Site. Before entering Byodoin Temple, make sure to stop by this place nearby. Since you're in Uji, you have to try the tea soba. The parent and child donburi was lightly seasoned, and the sprinkled sansho pepper added a nice fragrance, making it delicious. Thank you for the meal. #Byodoin Temple #Byodoin Phoenix Hall #Tea Soba Kyoto Udon Kawabumi

There were hardly any foreigners around, making it much more peaceful to visit Byodoin Temple compared to before. I decided to try a soba restaurant near the temple, aiming for their tea soba. I ordered the herring tea soba (1000 yen) and it was recommended. The service was quick, and the flavor and aroma of the broth were good. However, the soba itself was a bit disappointing as it was too soft and mushy. At the table next to me, there was a group of three middle school girls and three boys. It seems like many schools are turning their school trips into day trips or social studies excursions. They were mindful of the meeting time and were playing around, which was heartwarming. It made me nostalgic for that time in my life.

Today, I went to Uji Byodoin Temple around midday. I wanted to eat green tea soba, but the place I was looking for was closed. So, I ended up at this restaurant. My wife and daughter ordered green tea soba, while I ordered the green tea soba set. It arrived in a few minutes. The soba was decently tasty. The sushi that came with it was surprisingly delicious. I will definitely come back again.

I came to Uji, Kyoto for the first time in a year. I stopped by for a meal in front of Byodoin. It was my first visit to this place. My wife had green tea soba, and I had cold soba with a bottle of beer. The inside of the restaurant is well air-conditioned. The background music is unexpectedly enka (Japanese traditional ballad). The cold soba is served. Let's dig in. The soba broth has a strong bonito flavor. The sweet aroma is pleasant. The medium-thick soba noodles are firm. They slide down the throat smoothly. Even though it's a large portion, the soba broth flavor doesn't diminish. The broth is carefully and skillfully made. Now, let's visit the Phoenix Hall after a long time.

Located along the approach to Byodoin Temple, this restaurant is the closest to the temple. A specialty in Uji is tea, so the signature dish here is tea soba. I ordered the tea soba with herring set meal, which includes herring soba and sushi. The herring was tender and sweet, cooked in a sweet soy sauce. The soba broth was flavorful and delicious. However, the tea flavor in the soba was a bit overshadowed by the herring. Overall, the meal was decent but slightly on the pricey side, likely due to its location near a tourist spot.

I have been to Byodoin Temple for the third time. There isn't much else to see besides the temple, but I found this place to pass the time and have lunch. It is located closest to the entrance of the temple, so it tends to get crowded, but I was able to get in without waiting since it was just before lunchtime. I ordered the herring tea soba and sushi set. The sushi was decent. The tea soba had a green color, but it didn't have a strong tea aroma and didn't feel particularly special. The strong taste of the herring overshadowed the flavor and aroma of the soba. I would like to try the plain soba next time to taste the flavor and aroma again. I think it cost around 1000 yen.

During a stroll to see the autumn leaves in Uji and Fushimi in November 2021, we found a shop near the Byodo-in Temple that didn't have tourist prices. We decided to try their tempura soba and udon set, which we shared. It was the most affordable option in the area.

I visited Byodoin on August 12, 2007. I don't remember the price, but the "green tea soba" I had in the middle of summer was delicious and revitalized my tired body from the heat. Thank you for the meal.

After visiting Byodoin Temple, still feeling excited, but getting hungry, we decided to stop by a local restaurant. I tried the famous Kyoto dish, shin soba, and it was delicious. My companion had sushi, which was also very tasty. The restaurant had a casual atmosphere, was easy to enter, and offered reasonably priced delicious meals! It was wonderful!

I came to Uji to try the green tea soba (buckwheat noodles). The area is bustling with tourists as expected. Popular restaurants during lunchtime have quite a long waiting time. While strolling around, my companion found a place without a wait, but by then we were already about to enter. So we ended up inside a touristy restaurant with a nostalgic Showa-era atmosphere, where the air conditioning was nice and cool. We ordered two servings of green tea soba for 850 yen, which were served promptly. They also quickly brought us refills of cold water. I wish the soba had been boiled a little longer and properly rinsed in cold water to remove excess starch for a smoother texture. I didn't have high expectations, so it was decent overall, but maybe warm soba or a set meal would be better. They also offer shaved ice on the menu, so it seems like a place you can enjoy as a dessert spot too. Thank you for the meal.
