Today, instead of taking the bus as usual, I decided to walk. While strolling down a backstreet, I stumbled upon a Western-style restaurant. It's located two streets east from the Takeda Kaido heading south. The nearest bus stop is Sumiyoshi, but it's a bit confusing because it's split between northbound and southbound stops with no clear markers. I had originally planned to go to a ramen shop, but I changed my mind and stopped by this hidden gem for lunch. The signboard caught my eye, especially the omurice. I had been wanting to try omurice for a while, but the prices at traditional Western restaurants always held me back. When Pom no Ki opened a branch, I went to check it out but ended up going to Sukiya after seeing the prices. It has really become quite expensive. After that long introduction, I finally had omurice for the first time in years, excluding supermarket versions. I think the last time was at Daikokuya. This time, I opted for the M-sized omurice lunch with tomato sauce. As of April 2023 (including tax), it costs ¥750. The meal comes with a salad consisting of cabbage, lettuce, tomato, onion, corn, cucumber, and potato salad with French dressing. The omurice is topped with an orange-colored tomato sauce (more orange than in the photo) sprinkled with Parmesan. Lately, ketchup has been too sweet and overpowering in many dishes, but this sauce was more subtle and likable. The ketchup rice also has bits of green bell pepper for added flavor. Instead of chicken, pork is used in the dish, so it's not chicken rice. Chicken rice seems to have disappeared completely. Overall, the omurice from this local Western restaurant was quite satisfying in terms of portion size for an M-sized serving. I later ordered the white sauce, which pairs well with cheese. The creamy sauce is smooth and has a gentle flavor. Demiglace sauce, on the other hand, has a rich taste and is more modern in style. It seems like a sauce that many people would enjoy. Personally, I don't like how it interferes with the ketchup rice. Demiglace sauce would probably be best suited for hamburgers. Green curry sauce has a mild flavor with the curry's spiciness acting as an accent. When tasted alone, it's like curry, but when eaten with the egg and rice, the curry flavor isn't as prominent. The cheese has a taste similar to butter. Pumpkin sauce has a soft sweetness to it. The color is a beautiful yellow, different from actual pumpkins. Those who have tried pumpkin soup or desserts like sweet pumpkin cream or chestnut paste will appreciate this sauce. In these times of rising prices, these dishes offer excellent value for money. So, feel free to enjoy some omurice without breaking the bank.
