I arrived at Kyoto Station in the morning after taking a night bus, and decided to visit a restaurant that seemed Kyoto-like. I arrived at the restaurant at 7:15 AM and found a small line of about 7-8 people on a holiday morning. I purchased my meal from the ticket machine, and then chose four types of obanzai dishes. I selected mackerel teriyaki, burdock root dish, komatsuna dish, and another dish. I also ordered a yuba rice bowl. The yuba rice bowl was served first, with a generous amount of hot and sticky sauce with a hint of dashi and yuzu. The obanzai dishes were tasty, with the mackerel teriyaki standing out to me. The flavors were not as light as I expected from Kyoto cuisine, with the miso soup being on the richer side. Overall, I felt like I had a Kyoto dining experience. The self-service system for tea, water, and returning dishes made the turnover quick. However, when I left the restaurant, the line had gotten longer, so I recommend going early in the morning to avoid the crowds.

I had a very healthy meal. You can choose 6 side dishes yourself. You can also get a rice refill. I recommend selecting mackerel as one of the side dishes, and after finishing the tofu rice bowl, getting a rice refill and enjoying mackerel with rice. It was really satisfying.

I arrived after lunchtime, so I was able to enter the restaurant smoothly. I bought a meal ticket at the ticket machine and chose 6 types of side dishes. The staff brought me a freshly made Yuba rice bowl and soup afterwards. Everything was homemade and I was happy with the variety of dishes. The Yuba rice bowl had a light sauce, and I enjoyed it like a drink. Thank you for the delicious meal.

Obanza serves a lot of cold dishes. The Yuba Don is hot and delicious without being too salty. The interior is clean and has a calm atmosphere. I have visited several times, and I would appreciate it if Obanza could expand their menu. There are three types of seaweed dishes that are similar. Sometimes I come here for breakfast instead of using the hotel's breakfast. Last time I visited, the person in front of me was a tourist from overseas, and the staff greeted them with a smile, but when it was my turn and they realized I was a Japanese customer dining alone, their attitude changed and they became expressionless. It felt like the smile had disappeared. They didn't make eye contact and just said, "This and that." When I finished ordering, they still didn't make eye contact and said, "Please take a seat at the counter." I'm also a tourist from outside the prefecture, but the difference in treatment was quite noticeable. Is the hospitality only for foreigners? The service was too unfriendly. They are providing the same service even though we are paying the same amount.

Lunch visit. Came here because the restaurant I wanted to go to was closed for Obon. Had Yuba rice bowl and a choice of 6 vegetable side dishes for 1100 yen. Healthy lunch with a high ratio of female customers. The gentle Kyoto-style flavors, clean interior, and good value. You buy a meal ticket at the entrance and then choose your side dishes, but it can get crowded at the entrance even if there are empty seats inside. It would be smoother if you could see what the side dishes are while waiting.

When I go to Noguchi Village, I always get the set of 6 side dishes made with mixed grain rice (*ˊ˘ˋ*). I think it's 850 yen for this set, and it's really worth it. You can choose your favorite side dishes, and you can also choose from mixed grain rice and tofu bowl for your meal. The side dishes change depending on the day, so it's always enjoyable whenever you go. I'll definitely come back again (๑•᎑•)

I had a hard time choosing my favorite side dishes from the showcase, as there were so many delicious options! I decided to go with the Yuba Donburi for ¥1100, which caught my eye. The side dishes, both warm and cold, were all incredibly tasty. The Yuba Donburi was quite filling and had a gentle, flavorful sauce. The price was very reasonable as well. The restaurant had a nice atmosphere, with friendly and polite staff. Many solo diners, both men and women, were enjoying their lunch. I highly recommend this place when visiting Kyoto!

Before supervising the university entrance exam, I had a meal with my colleague. It had been a while since I last visited due to the pandemic, so I was a bit confused using the ticket machine. The staff serving the side dishes seemed unfriendly, which was a bit of a letdown. The side dishes were the same as before, with a variety of seasonings for the vegetables. The main dish I was looking for, the tofu rice bowl, was still on the menu and tasted just as good as I remembered. The tofu rice bowl had a gentle flavor, and I felt like having another serving. Unfortunately, the miso soup was a bit disappointing. By 11 o'clock, there were already many people lining up outside. The atmosphere seemed a bit different from before, so I'm not sure if I will come back again. It's a bit disappointing since it's a restaurant I used to frequent near my home.

I wanted to have a gentle lunch after overeating and drinking the day before, so I was looking for a restaurant. I first checked out the Nishiki store, but it was crowded and I couldn't choose from a variety of obanzai dishes, so I decided to go to the Karasuma store. I walked while following the Ato-matsuri procession to the restaurant. Despite the atmosphere of the closing of the festival, there were empty seats, so I was able to relax and enjoy my meal. I had visited this place for breakfast before, but the selection of obanzai dishes seemed a bit limited due to timing. The rice dishes looked heavy, so I opted for the alcohol set. It was nice to have options depending on the situation.

Today's morning meal is at "Kyonaaji Nomura Karasuma Honten" in Kyoto. Yesterday, I had a wonderful breakfast at "Tsunonegi Kamo Karasuma Store". The buffet (550 yen) offered a great variety of dishes at a reasonable price. The fresh vegetables were delicious, but the standout was the finely chopped natto, a rare find in Kansai. Today, I opted for a Kyoto-style morning meal featuring "obanzai" and "yuba". The options include a "Miyabi Gozen" with 12 obanzai dishes and a yuba rice bowl (1,800 yen) and an "Obanzai Set" with 6 small dishes to choose from (850 yen). In terms of presentation, the Miyabi Gozen is overwhelmingly beautiful. I chose the Miyabi Gozen without hesitation. After an 8-minute wait, it arrived. "This looks delicious. It's like a treasure trove of jewels." I couldn't decide which small dish to start with. The beef simmered in soy sauce and grilled mackerel were delicious, focusing on the natural flavors of the ingredients. The shrimp with mayonnaise dressing was also tasty. Even the side dishes like tofu and pickled vegetables were enjoyable as if they were the main course. Kyoto truly lives up to its reputation. The light seasoning with a rich dashi broth allows you to fully appreciate the flavors. The yuba rice bowl, which could be considered the main dish, had a rich broth and the creamy topping stimulated my appetite. The miso soup had a rich miso flavor with a fermented aroma, and the burdock and seaweed added a delicious umami taste. I savored all 12 small dishes one by one. The restaurant was clean and well-maintained, exuding a sense of cleanliness. However, the background music of piano ballads was a bit disappointing, as it didn't quite match the atmosphere of the restaurant.

I selected a set of 6 side dishes in an obanzai style, combining frozen ingredients. The selection of 6 out of 10 dishes is a bit limited. I wish there were options like kinpira and more variety of fish dishes, maybe at least 2 choices. Broccoli and beans seem to be frozen, and even the miso soup appears to be instant. I was surprised to hear it's a popular place. Maybe it's because the dishes look visually appealing. It's convenient that they open early in the morning, but that's about it.

Today, I went to work again in Shijo Karasuma, the 4th day of a 6-day work streak, feeling a bit tired, so I needed some energy! That's why I came to Kyonami no Mura Karasuma Honten, a very famous restaurant. In Kyoto, when you think of obanzai (Kyoto-style home cooking), this place often comes to mind. They open at 7 am, which is great! I bought a meal ticket inside, selected 6 obanzai dishes next to the register, and chose between white rice or mixed grain rice. All of the obanzai dishes had their own unique flavors and the balance of saltiness was perfect! The portion of okara (tofu refuse) was modest, and the sweet and savory meatballs were delicious. I especially liked the stir-fried takana (leaf mustard) and dried baby sardines – it went so well with the rice! Rice refills are free, so naturally, I had seconds! I found a restaurant that serves breakfast near the hotel I was staying at in the Karasuma area. When I entered, I noticed that there were many foreigners, as expected. It seems that travelers from overseas tend to start their day early to make the most of their limited time. I paid at a vending machine first, and today's special was a set of 6 small dishes with mixed grain rice for 850 yen. They accept Suica. I took the receipt to the counter and chose 6 dishes from the showcase without any explanation. I selected relatively light dishes like meatballs and daikon. I was a bit surprised when the tray was brought to me without any prior explanation. I didn't even have time to take photos. I was then served rice and miso soup. The seating area had a nice view of a small garden, and the atmosphere was bright for a renovated machiya. The variety of small dishes, rice, and miso soup looked beautiful and pleasing. The flavors were not particularly Kyoto-inspired, but they were delicious with a moderate amount of salt. One thing that bothered me was that there was no indication that you could get a rice refill. I only noticed when I saw someone else getting one. Even though I didn't plan on eating a lot in the morning, it would be helpful to have some guidance on this. Since it was self-service, I returned the dishes to the designated shelf.

I used this place for breakfast when I was traveling. Even before opening, there were customers lining up in front of the shop. The dishes are colorful and visually appealing, and it's nice that you can choose your favorite side dishes! I didn't plan to be stingy since I was on a sightseeing trip, but it's recommended because you can use it at a reasonable price.

I also had obanzai for lunch on the second day. I was looking forward to this restaurant as well. It's called Kyonamaji no Mura Karasuma Honten. It's located north of Shijo Station. It's on the first floor of an apartment building and the interior is beautifully designed. You buy a meal ticket and then take your seat. This time, I went for the recommended Yuba Donburi and obanzai set. For obanzai, you can choose six items from the showcase. They all looked delicious and it was hard to decide. There were unique dishes like Zaba-yaki and grilled bamboo shoots with zucchini, as well as classic dishes like simmered greens and udo flowers. Everything was carefully prepared and tasty. The Yuba Donburi had a gentle flavor that complemented the yuba well. It was perfect with rice. Everything was delicious and truly felt like a Kyoto meal. Thank you for the wonderful meal.

The hotel in the Karasuma-Karasuma area is quite expensive, and there are cases where people don't have the budget to include breakfast. I found this restaurant on Tabelog and arrived around 8 in the morning. I was able to smoothly get a seat and felt like I was treated to a feast from the morning. I ordered the "Gorgeous Set" for 1,800 yen, which included 12 assorted small dishes, yuba rice bowl, and soup. The presentation was vibrant and had a nice, healthy feel with a variety of items. I tried the yuba rice bowl without much expectation, but the thickened dashi flavor mixed with the rice was surprisingly delicious. It was so delicious that I would rate it a 4 out of 5.

We had lunch at a local restaurant in Kyoto during a family trip. My daughter, who lives in Nagoya, had visited this place a few times when she came to Kyoto. It was a self-service style where you could choose six types of side dishes to go with your meal. Since it mainly consisted of side dishes, my sons might have found it a bit lacking. I chose a restaurant where you can select from 6 different side dishes. I had the option to choose 6 side dishes and a yuba rice bowl set. It was a very healthy meal and a great way to enjoy Kyoto. I didn't think much about it at the time, but later I came up with a good way to eat it, so I'm leaving a note as a reminder. (I'm someone who likes to have seconds of rice) Choose the mackerel and 5 other dishes, eat the yuba rice bowl first while leaving the mackerel, then get a second serving of rice (for free) and enjoy it with the mackerel and other side dishes. I think this will be very satisfying. Of course, this may not be helpful for those who don't seek quantity.
