I have a distant memory of eating a mushroom-filled medicinal hot pot a long time ago. Today, I passed by a place nearby and decided to have a casual solo lunch there. After some deliberation, I chose the spicy tantan noodles with soup. It came with tofu, a Chinese salad-like side dish, pickled vegetables, rice, and almond jelly. The tantan noodles had a good amount of sesame sauce, which I liked. While I prefer more intense flavors, the medicinal soup base was nice and seemed good for the body. The Chinese spices like star anise added a lovely aroma. Overall, it was a guilt-free tantan noodle dish. Thank you for the meal.

Eating out every day to conquer the top 100 restaurants. Today, I visited a Chinese restaurant in Roppongi called Gozenbo. This restaurant was selected as one of the top 100 Chinese restaurants in 2021. It was established in 1995 and specializes in Yunnan cuisine. The owner, who used to work at an embassy, wanted to promote Yunnan cuisine, so he opened this restaurant. They use organic produce and follow the philosophy of "food is medicine" and "seeking true beauty." They develop original dishes using seasonal ingredients from all over Japan, based on Yunnan cuisine. They have chain stores in Roppongi, Ginza, Shibuya, and other locations. This was my first time visiting any of their restaurants. I arrived at the restaurant around 12:30 on a Sunday. It is located very close to Roppongi Hills Gate Tower. I made a reservation for lunch, but they only offer course meals, so I reserved the Mini Medicinal Lunch Course for 5,000 yen. The course included a cold dish assortment with Yunnan tofu, Yunnan ham, and soy sauce-marinated beef. The flavors were subtle and elegant. The soup with black-bone chicken was delightful. The dishes made me feel like I was becoming healthier in a tasty and elegant way. This restaurant practices "food is medicine," and it is a great place to dine. The Mini Medicinal Course includes: Assorted cold dishes, Black-bone chicken soup with Tianma, Lily root and shrimp stir-fry, Seven-leaf ginseng flower and chicken stir-fry, Pine nuts and corn stir-fry, Goji berry fried rice, and Tofu flower dessert.

The shark fin was larger than expected for the price of the course, with a good texture and very satisfying. There were many types of mushrooms, and the staff explained them in detail, including their names, characteristics, and benefits, making it enjoyable to eat. Although all the dishes were really delicious, it was a pleasant surprise that the portions were very generous and I couldn't finish them, which I regret. Please go on an empty stomach. For the finale, I could choose between porridge or noodles, but this time I chose porridge, which was undeniably delicious with plenty of mushrooms and vegetable broth in the soup. The dessert was mainly fruits, healthy until the end, and with a satisfying amount, so you can feel full without guilt. I would like to go again with an even emptier stomach next time. I had hot pot for lunch! I had a preconception that hot pot is spicy, but I made a reservation with the motivation that it's detoxifying even though I don't like spicy food. As a result, it wasn't spicy... I felt relieved and a bit disappointed at the same time during the meal.

I visited a Chinese restaurant called "Gozan Roppongi Branch" around 12:00 PM on a weekday in August 2023. The restaurant is located about a 3-4 minute walk from Roppongi Station. The interior of the restaurant is just the right size, with about half of the tables occupied by customers. We were seated at a table towards the back and ordered the weekly lunch set menu, which included beef and mushroom stir-fried in oyster sauce for ¥1,200, by scanning the QR code. The food was served in about 7-8 minutes, and the presentation of the Chinese lunch set was surprisingly impressive. The main dish consisted of beef, shimeji mushrooms, garlic sprouts, and plenty of chili peppers stir-fried in oyster sauce, accompanied by salad, rice, soup, and pickled vegetables. The beef and mushroom stir-fry had a perfect balance of tender beef and crunchy garlic sprouts, with a noticeable spiciness from the chili peppers. The oyster sauce added a rich umami flavor without being too overpowering. The overall taste was elegant and refined. I enjoyed the main dish with extra rice, and the pickled vegetables and mild seaweed and egg soup complemented the meal well. Although I couldn't finish all the chili peppers, I thoroughly enjoyed the beef and mushroom stir-fry set. The restaurant had a great ambiance, and I felt like I got more than my money's worth with the high-quality Chinese lunch. "Gozan" has several branches in Tokyo, but I would recommend the Roppongi branch for a pleasant dining experience. After the meal, we relaxed and chatted while sipping on the delicious tea provided on the table. It was a cozy and welcoming Chinese restaurant with a diverse menu, making it a place where you can enjoy yourself every time you visit.

I felt like eating mushroom hot pot to prevent summer fatigue, so I decided to visit the Roppongi branch since I had been to the Ginza branch before. During lunchtime, there were many families ordering lunch sets. I ordered a mushroom platter with a black-bone chicken broth hot pot, and the staff took care of all the cooking, which was very helpful. The taste was as delicious as ever.

The taste was quite good. Especially the black vinegar sweet and sour pork was the best I've had in Chinese cuisine. The rice noodles were also very delicious! Better than Yunnan cuisine in Ikebukuro and Ueno. The soup was tasty, as well as the black fried rice and the fish. The eggplant and chicken were just average. If I had to say something negative, it would be that the flavors were a bit strong and it was difficult to order individual items without a paper menu.

On weekdays, you can enjoy a lunch set starting from 1000 yen, which includes salad, soup, pickles, and rice (with free refills). On this day, I tried the 5000 yen mini herbal course. Despite being called "mini," it was actually quite substantial with 7 dishes, allowing me to fully experience authentic Chinese cuisine. Each dish was infused with herbal ingredients, which are said to be beneficial for beauty, diet, headaches, dizziness, low blood pressure, and cold sensitivity. The presentation was beautiful, and the use of herbal ingredients made the dining experience enjoyable and invigorating. They also offer a variety of Chinese tea and Shaoxing wine, which I enjoyed trying. The attention to detail in the tableware and glassware enhanced the overall experience. In the end, I felt like I had spent over 5000 yen just on drinks. The lunch menu is more basic, while the courses are more gourmet. The flavors of the dishes still linger in my memory, and I look forward to visiting again.

Business dinner at the Yunan cuisine specialty restaurant Gozenbo in Roppongi. Yunan cuisine, which may not be very familiar, is known for its spicy and sour flavors influenced by Sichuan, Tibet, and Thai cuisines. The Roppongi branch underwent a full renovation in March this year. We tried the Haruka course. The mushroom and black-bone chicken broth soup was delicious. It was served in a bowl instead of being cooked at the table. For the finale, we all had to choose the spicy rice noodles. Unlike pho, the rice noodles lacked chewiness. Superb mushroom hot pot! When it comes to mushroom hot pot in this area, people often think of Shangri-La Secret or this place, but I personally prefer this one. The price is a bit high-end, but the course menu offers a satisfying amount of food. Choosing the black-bone chicken as the base was a great decision, as the rich broth of the black-bone chicken goes well with the complex umami of the mushrooms. The hot pot is filled with high-quality and rare mushrooms like Agaricus and Porcini, making it visually appealing as well. The Shaoxing wine and Baijiu served at the restaurant are also delicious, almost like drinking soup with alcohol. The rice noodles served at the end are light and not too heavy, just right. Be careful with the lid on the hot pot, as the vent is very hot, so do not accidentally touch it. ⚠️

Visited on a weekday at 12 o'clock. It was quite busy, but I was able to go without a reservation! The interior of the restaurant has a high-class feel, but there are many people eating and chatting, creating a relaxed atmosphere. It was a mobile order system where you scan a QR code. I was very hungry, so I ordered two lunch sets. The "Special Set of Beef with Green Pepper and Shrimp with Broccoli" had tender meat! I was surprised. The meat was coated with plenty of starch and was very soft and gooey. The oyster sauce had a sweet taste without spiciness. The portion of meat was quite generous and satisfying! The shrimp in the broccoli dish was plentiful and large. And incredibly fresh!! The "Yuba (tofu skin) Stir-fry with Salt Set" had a large amount of yuba. It was soft and smooth. It had the strongest tofu flavor I've ever tasted in yuba. The Chinese cabbage was crunchy. The small dish of red pickled vegetables (Zasai?) was a tasty accompaniment to rice. The mild spiciness was perfect. The rice itself was also incredibly delicious!! It was shiny and had distinct grains. And it came in a large portion by default. It was so delicious that I finished the rice in no time. The salad had plenty of sesame dressing, and the egg soup was also delicious. The first glass of water served was oolong tea. There was a pitcher on the table, so when I finished it, I knew it was water. Having one pitcher per table was much appreciated!! Everything was of such high quality--and all for a set price in the 1000 yen range, making it incredibly cost-effective! The menu has so many options that I want to try more. Hills is still bustling as usual, but the rest of Roppongi seems a bit lackluster after the coronavirus outbreak, with the closure of the supermarket Linckos and the unremarkable Teletama-mawari old-fashioned store. I sat at a round table with a young waiter's guidance, used my smartphone for mobile ordering, and tried the weekly special chili sauce for fried chicken, which was basically shrimp chili sauce on chicken. It wasn't bad, but the sauce was just like shrimp chili sauce, so there could be room for improvement by adjusting the viscosity of the sauce or adding more vegetables like in sweet and sour pork. Well, for 1200 yen, I expected a bit more creativity, but maybe that's asking for too much. The automatic door at the entrance makes a squeaky noise, so a renovation might be appropriate.

I had high expectations because of the good reviews, but when I arrived at the restaurant, dessert was brought to me right away. When I pointed out the mistake, the staff just laughed and took the plate away without apologizing. This made me a bit uneasy. The mini medicinal cuisine course included: Cold appetizer platter, Black-boned chicken soup, Lily root and shrimp stir-fry, Tianqi ginseng flower and chicken stir-fry, Pine nuts and corn stir-fry, and Mushroom fried rice with wolfberries. Everything was too salty, and I had to order extra tea twice because my throat was so dry. I thought it was supposed to be medicinal cuisine, but it was so salty that I felt it was bad for my body. I wonder if it was just that day...

I went to a year-end party with all-you-can-drink option and the mushroom hot pot was just amazing (lol). There were 8 types of mushrooms in abundance - it seems good for the body, so no guilt! Every mushroom was delicious - there were even some rare ones. It was a wonderful year-end party. ❤️
