I went to a restaurant that was featured in the TOKK magazine's Setsubun special edition, which looked delicious in the photos. It was a great choice! I found a new favorite spot! For 1500 yen, you get a lot of food. You can enjoy a variety of dishes that are delicious, with a wonderful atmosphere and friendly staff. The appetizer of white miso with black beans and crunchy apples was a perfect balance and really stimulated my appetite. The tofu assortment was visually appealing and tasty, but the tofu made with soy milk and cream was a unique and dessert-like flavor. In Kyoto, we often eat fried fu (wheat gluten), and the fu cutlet here with mugwort was beautiful and delicious. The tofu hot pot with soy milk was a first for me, and it was delicious! Even after eating the ingredients, the yuba (tofu skin) that forms in the pot was also enjoyable. I secretly dipped the yuba in the broth and put it on rice to make an impromptu yuba rice bowl, which was creamy and incredibly delicious. They also offer a tofu course starting from 3000 yen in the evening, so I definitely want to go back. I think it would be nice to bring family or friends to enjoy tofu dishes in Pontocho when they visit Kyoto. I left feeling satisfied and happy.

The atmosphere seemed high-class, but even after eating to my heart's content, it was more affordable than I had expected. All the side dishes were delicious, and I tried yuba sashimi for the first time, and it melted in my mouth. The soy milk oden was also very tasty, with the sweetness of the beans coming through.

In a corner of Pontocho, there is a restaurant called Mamehachi. Lunch is very popular, so you need to make a reservation in advance to get in. Unable to secure a lunch reservation, I revisited at night. There are several courses available, and I ordered the Mamehachi course which seemed to offer a variety of the restaurant's specialties. The first dish served was a white miso soup with green plum, which had a great combination of flavors. This was followed by various types of tofu made from black beans and edamame, all of which were delicious and healthy. The meal continued with gratin, tempura, tofu with soy milk, grilled chicken, rice, miso soup, and dessert. I left feeling satisfied, with my stomach full and content from the healthy and beauty-enhancing dinner!

Today, I had lunch in the Shijo Kawaramachi area. The meal included seasonal white ae, a variety of beans, bubu tofu, today's side dish, dessert, and hot tea. The presentation of the variety of beans was so beautiful and got me excited! Personally, I was surprised by how delicious the two types of fried food in the front were. My personal favorite was the white ae that came out first. I was surprised to find strawberries in it, but they surprisingly went well together, packed with the deliciousness of tofu in one dish...♡ Every dish was delicious and satisfying. Thank you for the meal!

The restaurant focused on yuba as their specialty, but the taste was lacking. The ambiance was nice, but there was a sense of cutting corners. The dishes were seasoned in a Kyoto style, but nothing stood out as particularly memorable. Some improvements could be made to make it more appealing.

I went to Mamehachi in Pontocho to have yudofu. My friend had made a reservation for us, so we were fine, but there was a sign at the entrance saying that lunch ends at 1 pm on Saturdays. It was drizzling outside, but it seemed like a popular place. The entrance led to a long, Kyoto-style interior. The first floor, which I glimpsed, seemed to have only a counter. We went upstairs, took off our shoes, and were shown to our reserved seats. There were no windows, and the tables were separated by screens. The seating was a bit uncomfortable with the floor chairs, but it added to the Kyoto ambiance. We started with a seasonal shiraae, which was surprisingly smooth and delicious. The obanzai dishes were elegantly portioned, offering a variety of options. I particularly enjoyed the fried scallop and nanohana ohitashi. Next came the main dish of yudofu and grilled chicken thigh. We warmed up the yudofu over a flame and enjoyed it with yuzu salt ponzu. The dessert was a soy milk pudding with black honey and matcha warabi mochi, both of which were delicious. I experienced the essence of Kyoto, but my stomach still had room for more. It was a refined dining experience.

You can enjoy various tofu and yuba dishes at a cozy shop on a small street. Located in the city center, it's a great place to visit first when you come to Kyoto, leaving your luggage at the hotel. I recommend making a reservation before going. I made a reservation about a week in advance this time.

Before heading to the dance, we decided to grab a bite to eat at Sakaimachi. It seems like there are a lot of these kinds of restaurants in Sakaimachi. It's set up for tourists. The counter is a bit small. When wearing a kimono, you definitely need more space. The hot tofu cooked in soy milk was a nice touch, though. However, I don't think I'll remember this place again... It's not bad, but it just doesn't stand out to me.

I made a reservation for Friday at 7:30 PM. There was already one group seated on the first floor, but since it was a counter seat, it was perfect for me dining alone. The manager was very friendly and engaging, which made the meal even more enjoyable. The atmosphere in the restaurant was calm and the food was excellent. I haven't been to Kyoto since my school trip, so I asked for recommendations and the staff kindly provided me with many suggestions. The obanzai dish was perfect for me dining alone. The 5-item assortment was reasonably priced for the quality and location. Each dish was carefully seasoned and had a nostalgic feel to it. The bubu tofu dish was unique with crispy rice crackers on top, and the tofu cooked slowly in soy milk was delicious. Overall, I can confidently say that out of all the places I tried during my three-day trip to Kyoto, Mamehachi was the best in terms of taste, hospitality, ambiance, and location. I told the owner that I would definitely visit again when I come back to Kyoto. This restaurant truly made my trip memorable and I am grateful for the experience.

In the midst of some intimidating establishments in Pontocho with a Kyoto-like atmosphere, this restaurant stands out as welcoming and offers a menu that incorporates Kyoto-style dishes while also providing healthy options, making it a great choice for dining with anyone.

Among the Kyoto cuisine restaurants lined up in this area, this restaurant is relatively casual and has a low threshold, but I felt the quality of the food was high. The dishes are not elegant Kyoto cuisine, but rather have a strong and easy-to-understand flavor with a good depth and umami. Many dishes go well with alcohol. The obanzai (Kyoto-style home cooking) was also delicious, but what was particularly good this time was the tofu and white miso oden. This is delicious. I love this soup. It could be served as pasta just like this. Of course, the tofu is delicious, and all the dishes were well thought out. I think this is a restaurant where you can enjoy creative dishes rather than traditional ones. Thank you for the meal.

Today, on the second day of my posting, after having breakfast at Inoda Coffee, I took a stroll around the streets of Kyoto, making my way to Gion Shijo. Since it was a sunny day, I stopped to admire the Kamogawa River before heading to lunch. I visited Kyoto Mamehachi in Pontocho, a street lined with bars and restaurants. This restaurant offers dishes made with Kyoto tofu and obanzai (traditional Kyoto side dishes). The interior has a calming Japanese atmosphere, with seating options including counter seats, tatami rooms, and private rooms, making it suitable for families or special occasions. I tried the Mamehachi Lunch set for ¥2640, served in a cute round basket. The set includes 7 different obanzai dishes: kumiage yuba, black sesame tofu, Mineoka tofu, two types of miso-marinated tofu, bite-sized fried nama-fu, scallop tempura, and young chicken marinated in sansho pepper. It's a tofu lover's dream to have such a variety of tofu dishes. The small portion sizes make it easy for women to finish all the dishes. After the basket, you also get bubu tofu, today's obanzai, rice with pickles, and dessert, making it a luxurious lunch course. Japanese cuisine often leaves you craving rice, so having it included in the course is a nice touch.

I have been to this restaurant several times. The atmosphere inside is calm and the staff are all very nice. The food is elegant and delicious. Although I don't have any photos, the oden dish is particularly delicious and Kyoto-like. I highly recommend it. It is a restaurant that is easy to use for any occasion.

After several years, I visited this place again. Last time, we used the second floor with a special group, but this time we sat at the counter. I had imagined a leisurely time enjoying tofu and yuba as snacks, but hmm... The food was neither good nor bad, a bit of a letdown compared to my previous visit. If you want to eat yuba sashimi, you could just buy it at Nishiki Market and eat it at a hotel without missing out. The tempura was quick, so that was satisfactory. The rice at the end is a must-have to regain composure. The only thing left is the level of customer service.

Kyoto - Pontocho Kyoto Mamehachi Yuba and Tofu shop. The interior is beautiful and the dishes are Instagram-worthy. Healthy and catered towards women, I think. The staff are friendly and the lunch is reasonably priced. I came without a reservation but was able to get in right away, lucky me. There were a few closed-down shops in Pontocho, making it feel like a quiet ordinary backstreet. This time, I visited this place located in the middle of the street. The interior of the restaurant had a typical Kyoto layout, long and narrow, with a counter on the first floor and tatami seating on the second floor. We ordered the Tofu course and some other dishes. The staff, who were elderly, were lovely and explained the dishes to us in detail. We tried a variety of dishes from unique tofu to soy milk oden. The yuba in particular was delicious. Having a dinner that is not centered around meat or fish was a nice change of pace in Kyoto. Thank you for the meal. It was delicious.

On Friday night, I made a reservation for a 9-course meal without meat in a private room for 4 people. The room had a heated floor and sunken kotatsu table, which allowed us to sit comfortably. When we closed the door, it blocked out the noise from the counter and other tables, creating a cozy atmosphere for our family gathering to enjoy delicious tofu and vegetables. The signature tofu and yuba dishes were amazing, and the vegetable tempura (featuring long green peppers, sweet potatoes, shiitake mushrooms, etc.) were thick and flavorful. The meal itself would have been within a budget of 5,000 yen, but we ended up spending around 7,000 to 8,000 yen per person due to enjoying some drinks. As soon as you enter the restaurant, you're greeted by a scene reminiscent of a traditional Japanese cuisine counter, with the enticing aroma of oden. The private rooms are located towards the back, past the counter seats on the first floor. While the counter seats seemed popular among couples and female customers, the private rooms would be suitable for families with young children or elderly individuals to relax comfortably.

(Visited on October 16, 2020) On this day, I had a meeting at the site in the morning, and planned to have lunch with my wife in the afternoon. It seemed like a restaurant my wife wanted to try, and it was a Go To EAT campaign restaurant, so we had made a reservation for 1:00 pm in advance. Surprisingly, we arrived at the restaurant around 12:30, but it was too early, so we decided to wander around nearby to kill some time. However, we couldn't wait long, so around 12:40, we decided to enter the restaurant. Since our reservation was for a table, which was not available yet, they offered us seats at the counter if we were okay with it. We agreed and were guided to our seats after alcohol disinfection and temperature check. It seems like they specialize in black soybean tea. The usual price for the Douhachi lunch set was 2400 yen, but with a discount from one of the online reservation sites, we paid 2300 yen (tax included). The seasonal white salad consisted of komatsuna and carrot, and the sweetness of the tofu combined with the crunchy vegetables was delightful. The Douhachi assorted plate included various items like yuba, miso pickles, tofu, black sesame tofu, fried gluten, young chicken with Japanese pepper, and fried scallops, all in bite-sized portions with different flavors and vibrant colors. The bubu tofu in soy milk hot pot was a unique experience with a rich flavor and a nice texture from the fried rice cracker. The daily side dish was taro and pumpkin in minced meat sauce, which paired perfectly with the rice. The rice itself was delicious, and the pickled vegetables complemented it well. I wished there were more pickles. For dessert, we had a tofu and soy milk pudding, which was rich and satisfying. Overall, it was a delightful meal. Thank you. Wi-Fi available. Counter seats on the 1st floor, tatami seating on the 2nd floor.

Kyoto Mamehachi. In the Kyoto trip the other day. I wanted to try some Kyoto-style cuisine, so I decided to visit this restaurant in Pontocho. Here, you can enjoy tofu dishes like Kyoto-style nama-fu, tofu, yuba, and obanzai. We made a same-day reservation and were seated in a tatami room on the second floor, where we received very polite and attentive service. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. In Kyoto, where many restaurants are quite expensive, we were able to enjoy a meal at a very affordable price.

I visited the restaurant because I wanted to eat tofu dishes. It seems difficult to enter without a reservation, so I made a reservation and was able to enter smoothly. The restaurant is mainly focused on tofu dishes, but they also have a variety of side dishes, meat, and fish, making it a well-rounded place. I started with the assorted side dishes, which was quite a generous portion for one person. It was great as a side dish for drinks, with good flavors and nice presentation. The tofu dishes were reasonably priced and delicious. I initially had bottled beer, but ended up also enjoying some sake since they had a good selection. The sake paired well with the food. They accept payment through PayPay, and I was surprised to receive a 20% cashback, making the overall cost very affordable. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere, and I had a great dining experience with excellent value for money. I highly recommend this restaurant in the area. Thank you for the meal!

My first visit to Pontocho was upon the recommendation of a friend while I was working in Kyoto. Since I couldn't have tofu dishes for lunch in Kyoto due to bringing my dog along, I made up for it here successfully. The one-bite wagyu steak at the end of the course was satisfying with a decent portion. The prices were also wallet-friendly, so I am very grateful to my friend for suggesting this place.
