After work, I made a detour to a curry shop. Located just a 3-minute walk from Shimokitazwa Station's south exit, in a bustling alley behind a building on the 1st floor. I arrived around 6:30 pm on a weekday and was seated immediately. I ordered the "Two Curries + Gelato" set for 2050 yen. The curries I chose were "A (Sambal)" and "B (Chicken Keema)", and I paired it with a refreshing Lassi. The system was to purchase a meal ticket from the vending machine at the entrance and hand it to the staff. I was served a rich Lassi right away, followed by the curries in about 5 minutes. The Sambal was mild, and the Chicken Keema had just the right level of spice - both delicious whether eaten with rice or on its own. The portion of rice was a bit small, perhaps to encourage savoring the flavors. For dessert, I chose the "Orange" and "Almond" gelato. It wasn't just regular gelato; it had a spicy twist to it that was completely unique. When I think of curry in Shimokitazawa, I imagine a bustling, heavily spiced Indian curry restaurant where you sweat profusely while eating. But this place had a refined atmosphere, offering a classy curry experience for adults.

I had been curious about this curry restaurant! The curry, pickles, and rice were all authentic and full of flavor! The spiciness was strong and the spice aroma was amazing. Their signature dish is the Jalaat spice. The Sichuan pepper chocolate was sweet chocolate ice cream, but it had a tingling sensation from the Sichuan pepper that lingered even after it was finished! When paired with blue cheese roasted walnuts, it became milder and even more delicious. I was worried about the popularity of this place, but when I went on a weekday around 1 PM, there was no line and we were seated right away, even with a group of 5! All the staff were very kind and friendly. ❤️

■ Shop Name Curry Spice Gelateria KALPASI ■ Location About 5 minutes walk from Shimokitazawa Station ■ Budget 1,500 yen ■ Ordered Menu Two types of curry ■ Pre-review Rating 3.85 On this day, as the Chinese restaurant I wanted to visit in Shimokitazawa was closed, I was looking for a place that could satisfy my sudden craving for Chinese food. That's when I stumbled upon the highly rated Curry Spice Gelateria KALPASI. As the name suggests, this place not only serves curry but also specializes in gelato, like the second branch of a shop located in Senjafuda Hashi. It's a bit hidden away in the back streets where the shops are clustered, so be careful not to miss it! (I accidentally entered the wrong shop at first, haha) Upon entering the shop, a young staff member greeted me and explained that I could choose from at least two out of four curry options. On this day, the menu included: A. Sambal (bean and root vegetable curry) B. Chicken Keema C. Pork Vindaloo D. Bengal Keema Apparently, A to C are classic options, while D is a more recent addition. The staff member recommended C and D to me, so being a fan of pork, I chose the curry single portions of C and D (1,400 yen) with an additional option of extra large rice (100 yen). Given that the shop emphasizes gelato as well, it was no surprise that the place was mostly filled with female customers, most of whom were ordering gelato. The dishes arrived in about 5 minutes. The two curries were served on a small plate, atop sticky Thai rice garnished with tangy lemon pickles and tomato puree. The plate was adorned with scrambled eggs, okra, sweet potato, and onion slices. The curry sauce, thin and smooth, featured chunks of pork with a refreshing hint of cilantro, and the Bengal Keema was flavorful with plenty of minced meat and a sharp spice kick – very delicious! Overall, the only downside was the portion size, which might be a bit small for men even with the extra rice. I personally would have liked at least double the amount! (Haha) They also offer gelato, so for those with a sweet tooth, enjoy a refreshing gelato after the flavorful curry!

I arrived around 11:20 on Saturday and there were already 7 or 8 people waiting. As soon as the store opened, we were seated from the front of the line, and I was able to sit down in the first round. You can choose 2-4 types of curry from 4 different kinds. I bought a set of 2 curries and gelato at the ticket machine, with lemon chicken and pork curry for the curries, and cardamom mascarpone lassi and blue cheese roasted cumin seed for the gelato. The lemon chicken curry had a spiciness level of 2, just right, while the pork curry had a spiciness level of 3, a bit spicy. Both were delicious with tender meat. It was great to enjoy flavor variations with the side dishes and lemon pickles on top of the rice. The gelato had a spicy kick and a unique flavor that you can't find elsewhere.

No specific order (on weekdays), ordered 4 types of coriander with optional green chili, and as always, it was delicious. The Shimokitazawa branch provides a casual way to enjoy KALPASI. Of course, the main branch is unquestionably delicious, and this branch is also delicious, without causing indigestion, so you can eat it crispily. It has a good balance of spices and just the right amount to enjoy. Plus, it's not as crowded on weekdays, so it's very convenient. Men may feel that the portion is a bit small, so adding gelato or adjusting may be necessary.

Visited on a weekday at 4 pm -> about 20% full -> 2 minutes walk from Shimo-Kitazawa station. Two types of curry for ¥1400. First time in Shimo-Kitazawa. It's known as a competitive curry area, so this place caught my eye on Tabelog as it's open all day. The interior is bright with soothing jazz music playing, creating a relaxing atmosphere. [Rice] The rice, which is usually a question mark in curry, works well as it's healthy. [Achaar] There are 5 types, each in small quantities, and they are also on top of the rice, so it's good in terms of variety. The onion achaar has a nice tanginess and is a nice little break. The other achaars are milder but gentle. [Curry] The dal curry doesn't have a strong presence but the mellow flavor of the beans comes through nicely. The keema curry, on the other hand, is bold and spicy with a good contrast to the dal. It enhances the flavor of the minced meat. [Overall Impression] It has a nice balance between gentleness and boldness, creating a great contrast. It's easy to see why it's popular - healthy, doesn't cause indigestion, and has a high likability factor.

When I visited this time, they had a Habanero watermelon which was quite spicy with a strong Habanero flavor! It was unique and delicious. As always, the Sichuan pepper was tasty too! The lunchtime was good as they seemed to share the space with other stores, so I didn't have to wait in line to eat.

I came to eat curry before, but it was my first time trying the ice cream as a dessert. There were so many flavors to choose from and I didn't know what was the best option. I went with a group of friends and we tried a variety of flavors. Eating each flavor individually was delicious, but it was fun to mix and match flavors like a Nepalese Thali set. I don't remember exactly what combinations we tried or which ones were the best, but it was a great experience.

I had a curry and ice cream set! It was incredibly delicious! But it's quite expensive! I wonder if spices are really that expensive, and also, I should go early to avoid waiting in line! There were about 10 people lined up even before the store opened! The location of the store is a bit tucked away, but you can easily find it because of the crowd! Spiced ice cream is quite rare! It's heavily spiced so it might not be liked by kids, but I personally enjoyed it a lot!

I've always been curious about a curry restaurant in Shimokitazawa. Today, I ordered the bean curry and lemon curry from the menu. The lemon curry was particularly delicious. The bean curry had a texture that was like a cross between hummus and curry, not a great match with rice but still tasty. The pickled lemon and assorted vegetables on top of the rice had a unique flavor. I ordered a salted rice malt lassi for my drink, which was rich and thick, perfect for pairing with spicy curry. Although I was full and had to skip it, I'd like to go back and try the spiced gelato next time. I'm curious about the blue cheese and roasted cumin gelato.

I lined up at 11:22 on a Monday for the curry set with 3 types of gelato and a drink for 2350 yen. I was the 7th person in line. I chose a salted malt lassi for my drink, and for gelato, I chose Sichuan chocolate, masala chai. For curry, from left to right, I had dal tarka, Sri Lankan pork, and lemon chicken. I couldn't really tell the difference in the curry flavors, but they were all delicious. The pork in the pork curry was especially delicious. Among the three curries, I preferred the one with beans on the left. I'm not a fan of beans, but when they taste good, they taste good. I also realized that I'm not a big fan of the watery type of curry. None of the curries were spicy at all. The gelato flavors were new to me. I could really taste the spices in the gelato. At first, I was confused, but I started to like it gradually. I prefer the masala chai flavor.

Curry restaurant with a ticket purchase style. They also have a gelato shop attached, and I had the gelato set. You can choose 1-3 types of curry. I don't like beans, so I chose 2 types. There are side dishes around the curry and pickled fruits (I forgot the name) on top of the rice, so you can enjoy various flavors. I wish they had informed me about the gelato being sold out when I bought the ticket. However, the gelato had a nice aroma and went well with the milk, so it was delicious. Thank you for the meal.

When it comes to Shimo-Kitazawa, you think of curry! After watching a comedy show, I went to this place. They offer three different curry flavors. There is no option to order just one flavor; you have to choose between two or three. The spiciness levels are indicated and the staff is very friendly, so even first-time visitors won't have trouble ordering. The curry is flavorful with a nice kick to it! I'm not great with spicy food, but I was able to handle the medium spiciness level. You mix the curry with rice and the toppings provided. It was delicious and satisfying! They also have unique gelato flavors with spices blended in, which are popular. I wanted the chocolate flavor, but it was sold out. I ended up ordering cinnamon and coconut vanilla flavors, but they weren't to my liking. The curry was so good that I would definitely want to come back when I visit Shimo-Kitazawa again!

Today, I ordered Lemon Chicken, Sri Lankan Pork, and gelato. Both curries were delicious. The Lemon Chicken had a nice acidity, making it easy to eat. The Sri Lankan Pork was spicy and the pork was very tender and tasty. The chutney and lemon pickles on top of the rice provided a nice change of flavor and kept things interesting as I ate. The side dish, which seemed like potato salad, added a smooth touch among the accompaniments on the platter. It would have been helpful if there were descriptions for the accompaniments. As for the gelato, all the flavors were tempting and I had a hard time choosing. I ended up ordering Szechuan Chocolate and Cinnamon Cookie Milk. Both were delicious on their own but also tasted great mixed together. Personally, the Szechuan Chocolate was shocking. It had a sweet taste but with a numbing sensation from the Sichuan pepper, which was very refreshing.

Located in the narrow alleyways of Kitamachi, this curry restaurant is a hidden gem. When entering with a hint of uncertainty, the staff kindly guides you through the menu. Without hesitation, I ordered the 3-curry set: lentil curry, lemon chicken curry, and Sri Lankan pork curry. I enjoyed mixing the side dishes with the rice. Each dish had a refined and beautiful taste. The curries and side dishes were like an all-star team, exciting all my taste buds. It's a very sophisticated and elegant curry.

I visited Theater 711 in Suzunari, which could be considered the holy land of theater in Shimokitazawa. As development progresses in Shimokitazawa, this place seems to be stuck in a Showa era time warp, still thriving. Amazing! Before watching a play, I decided to grab some food at Kalpashi. Luckily, there was no wait. The only seating available was at an L-shaped counter. I bought a food ticket from a vending machine. I opted for the curry set with 3 choices and a drink (1,900 yen tax included): - A rich bean curry featuring Dall Tadka Chili - A bitter curry with roasted Sri Lankan pork powder - A spicy lemon chicken curry with a tangy lemon flavor. For the drink, I chose the salted rice malt lassi. It's important to replenish salt on hot days. After all, curry is the ultimate medicinal food, making it perfect for energy replenishment on hot days. It provides nutrition and salt recovery, perfect!

I had been to this restaurant before, and the curry left a strong impression on me. Since it was hot today, I felt like having some gelato, so I decided to revisit. I enjoy the kick of spices, so I really liked the gelato here with a subtle spiciness. Today, I tried the Jaljeera Kiwi and Sichuan Pepper Chocolate flavors! The refreshing kiwi and slightly spicy chocolate were delicious! Next time, I want to try the Cinnamon Cookie Milk flavor!

Seating: There are more people in the evening than during the day. By the time we finished eating (7:00 PM), a queue had already formed. We ordered 3 dishes. The side dishes are also well seasoned and delicious. You can choose curries ranging from spicy to mild. The mixed grain rice has a nice texture. Mixing everything together creates a complex and delicious flavor. We chose 2 types of desserts, which also become delicious when mixed at the end. They are well seasoned too. Not only the main branch, but this branch is also fantastic. Well done!

I went to the Shimo-Kitazawa store without a reservation because it seemed like you couldn't get in without one at the main store. I had a bit of trouble finding the place, but eventually found it tucked away in a slightly hidden location. Surprisingly, there were only two groups waiting when I arrived, so I decided to wait as well. It was a bit hot, but they offered tea while we waited, which was nice. After about 20-30 minutes, it was my turn to order. I bought tickets from the vending machine as advised by the staff. I ordered a two-item curry set for two people with drinks and gelato. The curry options ranged from sweet to medium spicy to very spicy. I chose a sweet curry, a medium spicy curry, and a very spicy curry. I also received a ginger ale and a lassi with koji. The straws in the drinks were a bit difficult to use, but the curry was presented nicely and was delicious. I mixed all the curries at the end as instructed, which really enhanced the flavors. The desserts were unique and enjoyable, with flavors like masala chai and cardamom mascarpone lassi. Overall, the experience was great, and I would like to try the main store with a reservation next time. Thank you for the meal.

I went to 1430 on Obon and there was a wait for two people, but we were seated quickly. I had the Chicken & Pork curry and Gelato (Habanero Watermelon, Toasted Mustard Coconut). The Sri Lankan pork was delicious, and the sweet and spicy flavor of the gelato was amazing! Now I want to visit the Sapporo Funabashi Honten too! Truly a famous curry shop in Shimo-Kitazawa.

Hello, this is Sapi. Today, I want to introduce "Kalpasi." This place is a popular curry restaurant in Shimokitazawa, where you can also enjoy gelato infused with spices. The location is a bit hidden, nestled in the back alleys. You can choose from a 2-curry or 3-curry combo. I opted for a combination of Dal Tadka Sri Lankan Pork and Bean and Pork curry, paired with ice cream. The curry had a strong spice flavor and a nice texture from the ingredients. Mixing and eating it with the sides was a great experience. The gelato flavors I tried were Cardamom, Mascarpone Lassi, Szechuan Chocolate. The Szechuan Chocolate was a standout with its rich chocolate flavor and bold spice. I finished it quickly. Overall, it was a delightful meal.
