Amidst the difficulties faced by restaurants during the pandemic, I have taken to having solo lunches. I see it as an opportunity to try out various eateries. In tourist areas like around Kyoto Station, the pricing at most places is on the higher side, so finding a delicious and cost-effective restaurant requires some skill. I was considering going to a nearby French restaurant, Ikariya, for lunch, but it seemed they didn't offer their affordable lunch menu on Saturdays. As I was pondering my options, I noticed a flag advertising "oden" (Japanese hot pot dish). I had been curious about this izakaya (Japanese pub) for a while. Even though the sign said they served curry for lunch, I thought if they had oden, it would be a healthy choice. To my surprise, they had an oden set meal for only 800 yen including tax. Before I knew it, I had walked in. I arrived just before the last order at around 13:30, and there was only one other group of customers. I opted for the oden and kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers) set as I wanted to enjoy a variety of oden. The oden set arrived promptly after the kushikatsu was fried, and my first impression was, "Can I really eat all of this?" The oden set included five types of oden, side dishes, pickles, and even a miso soup with enoki mushrooms. The color of the oden broth was surprisingly light, but the taste was delicious despite being lightly seasoned. The daikon (Japanese radish) was melt-in-your-mouth tender. The miso soup with enoki mushrooms was a perfect accompaniment to the rice, which I found surprising as I had always thought oden wouldn't go well with rice. The kushikatsu included pork, lotus root, and a fluffy white fish. It came with both sauce and ponzu (citrus-based sauce), and it was piping hot and tasty. I have already decided to come back here again. It was delicious, and the cost-effectiveness in front of Kyoto Station is fantastic. Thank you very much.
