I finally had the chance to visit the famous restaurant called Mame-tora in Gion, Kyoto. I made a reservation for the lunch set at 13:30, so I decided to have a late breakfast at the hotel. After checking out, I visited Sanjusangendo and before I knew it, it was already past 13:00. I hurried to Flower-viewing Lane and parked at Kennin-ji Temple's parking lot nearby. Once inside, I was shown to a private room which was spacious and relaxing. I ordered a drink and it was served promptly. The seasonal appetizers arrived first, including jun-sai, Manjushage chili pepper with dried baby sardines, and simmered conger eel - all delicious! Next was winter melon with yuba in a flavorful broth, followed by tempura. The young ayu tempura was incredibly tasty! Finally, the Mame-tora sushi arrived - it was amazing! It included chimaki for the Gion Festival in July. It was visually appealing and delicious. Although the portions seemed small, I ended up feeling quite full. The white miso soup was very Kyoto-like and tasty. Lastly, the green tea and kuzumochi were also delicious. I'm glad I got to try the famous Mame-tora sushi. It was a wonderful meal!

I had lunch in a private room on the third floor. The elegant and colorful dishes made for a delightful lunchtime experience. The person serving the dishes was very polite, and the food was delicious.

I visited this restaurant during my trip to Kyoto. The dishes were all delicious with a gentle flavor. The quaint exterior and beautiful interior made it a great place to relax and enjoy a meal. The dishes were served in small portions, so it was easy to overindulge. The steamed hot pot dish was so-so. It felt a bit touristy.

The small dish was so cute that I ended up taking the empty plate as well. The grated hamo soup was delicious with a refined Kyoto-style broth, making me grateful to have been born in Japan. But then, the salmon and cheese on the temari-zushi brought a sudden Western twist. The Othello-like dish is konbu tsukudani. The miso soup I thought it was turned out to be sweet - maybe because it's Kyoto-style?

I went to Kyoto with my friends once a month this time. It was my first time going during the Gion Festival season, and I was a little excited. Walking around the town of Kyoto, it was nice to see rice cakes displayed above the entrances of ordinary houses, adding to the atmosphere. We visited Gion Tofu Mitra, a popular restaurant on Hanamikoji Street just a short walk from Yasaka Shrine. Reservations are required. We ordered the popular Tofu Sushi Set for ¥5500 which included:
- Appetizer: Six small dishes of seasonal vegetables
- Soup: Eel and miso soup
- Fried dish: Grilled sweetfish
- Main dish: Tofu sushi
- Rice: Today's rice dish
- Dessert: Kuzumochi
The summer menu featured ayu and eel, which were both delicious. The tofu sushi was packed with rice and had more volume than it appeared. I would love to try it again in a different season.

I happened to pass by and luckily was able to get into a restaurant that I had been curious about for a while without a reservation. It was a three-story building and I was seated on the third floor, which had tatami mats and cushions. The second floor seemed to have sunken seating areas. The first floor had a counter and two private rooms for four people each. I thought the sushi set would just be sushi and soup, but the appetizers that came first were all very delicious. Thank you for the meal.

I went to Mamejika, which I was curious about because it was featured in a Kyoto guidebook. It is located in the beautiful streets of Gion, across from the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo Theater where the Miyako Odori is currently being held. I'd love to see it someday. I made a reservation for 11:30 am and there was already a line forming before the opening, so making a reservation might be a good idea. We were all led to a spacious tatami room and the lunch began. The meal consisted of:
Appetizer
Soup
Fried dish
Bamboo shoot
Wakasagi (smelt fish)
Main dish: Mamezushi (bean sushi)
Dessert: Warabi mochi
The bamboo shoot tempura was delicious and had a generous portion. And then, the much-awaited Mamezushi was served! It was so cute when I lifted the lid myself. It seemed a shame to eat it! It was advised to eat it without adding anything as it already had seasoning, but personally, I found it a bit sour overall. Nevertheless, each dish was delicious. It was a delightful and elegant lunchtime experience.

The atmosphere was very nice. The lunch at ¥4,800 per person was alright. It was a bit disappointing that the sushi toppings were not very luxurious. The appetizers, white miso soup, and dessert mochi were all very delicious.

The dishes were all meticulously prepared, and you could feel the detailed work of the artisans in each one. The only disappointing thing was that the voices of the older ladies around us were loud, and we ended up hearing conversations we didn't want to hear. However, this is just a matter of customer manners, so there's nothing that can be done about it. Overall, we were very satisfied with the service and the food at the restaurant.

I had the lunch course! Starting with the appetizer, I could feel the atmosphere of Kyoto in the meal. Everything was just the right amount, with warm soup and tempura. Especially the tempura of butterbur sprouts and smelt was delicious. The temari sushi had various flavors and ingredients, each one enjoyable. I highly recommend this restaurant!

I started the new year with a reservation at this place. I ordered a draft beer to start, and when the landlady asked if I wanted a small or medium, I chose medium. As it was New Year's, they served me otoso (New Year's sake) as well. The appetizer included whelk and sea cucumber vinegar, making me crave some sake. Next was a white miso soup with various ingredients, followed by a sashimi platter of tuna, sea bream, and fried squid. The deep-fried dish was shrimp and yam tempura. The steamed turnip dish made me want some hot sake. The grilled dish was bonito with miso and candied kumquats, a perfect balance of salty and sweet. The rice dish was a large portion of bean sushi, so I had to take some home. I managed to finish it all and walked home to burn off the calories. It was a satisfying meal.

As always, the cute and delicious bean sushi was my favorite, and the shrimp and taro were also delicious. It seemed like the portion was a bit too much for my elderly mother. I wish there were smaller portion options available. However, the restaurant was fully booked again today. I was very satisfied.

I made a reservation and was able to get a table, but there were quite a few customers waiting since it was the weekend. Overall, the food was delicious, and the sushi was cute and easy to eat. The prices were also reasonable, so it was great value for money. I understand that it's a popular place and the staff seemed tired, but most of them left a disappointing impression. However, the lady who seemed like the owner was very energetic and her cheerful attitude made us feel welcomed. Thank you very much.

Today, I went leaf peeping in Kyoto. For lunch, I found a restaurant right near Kennin-ji Temple. The meal started with a colorful array of appetizers, followed by a steamed matsutake mushroom dish, grilled sawara fish, and sushi. Everything was meticulously prepared and incredibly delicious. The seasoning of each dish was perfect.

We used a private room for lunch. The private room fee was 500 yen per adult, so we paid an additional 2,000 yen for the four of us. The private room had a sunken kotatsu table and was very clean. The dishes were all cute and delicious. I forgot to take photos, but the conger eel tempura was plump and amazing! I would like to use this place again.

Mr. Mamedora from Gion visited Kyoto for the first time. The Kyoto cuisine was beautiful, gentle, and delicious. The Mamesushi had more rice than expected. I made a reservation at this restaurant that I had been interested in for a while, wanting to fully enjoy the Kyoto atmosphere. Located in the heart of Gion, the exterior has a great atmosphere. There are two time slots, 11:30 and 13:30, and I chose the 13:30 slot for the 4,800 yen course. It included appetizers, soup, grilled dish, and the main dish of bean sushi, followed by dessert. The bean sushi was so cute! I was very satisfied because this was what I wanted to eat. The white miso soup was impressively Kyoto-like. Thank you for the feast. I would love to visit again.

Had lunch in Gion. This time, I reserved the Anago Sushi Set (¥4,800). Appetizers: 3 types, beautifully arranged appetizers. The simmered conger eel was delicious and memorable. Soup: Winter melon and yuba. The winter melon, which I haven't had in a long time, was soft and tasty! Fried dishes: 3 types, round sweet potato, young ayu fish, water eggplant. All of them were very delicious. Anago sushi and soup: The main dish, Anago sushi. It looked beautiful and was so delicious that it felt like a waste to eat it. Dessert: Uguisu mochi. It was a perfect way to finish the meal, with a mild sweetness that was delicious. Around ¥6,000 for drinks and meal. The atmosphere of the restaurant was lovely, and I was able to enjoy a leisurely lunch. Thank you for another wonderful meal today!

A shop located in the atmospheric streets of Gion. It seems they have two seatings, one at 11:30 and another at 13:30. * They served 12 small appetizers and plum juice. Every dish had a delicate flavor, allowing us to enjoy authentic Kyoto cuisine. * Mamezushi - cute bite-sized sushi. Personally, I felt the rice was a bit soft, but I was satisfied with the variety of options available.

During my trip to Kyoto, my mother really wanted to visit this restaurant. Every dish was delicate and beautiful, making us feel happy. Each dish was explained to us in detail. Personally, I was impressed by the grilled bamboo shoots, which were fresh and had a enjoyable texture. I would love to visit this restaurant again next time I'm in Kyoto.

I visited this place for the first time in about 10 years. This was before the renovation. At that time, I used the evening course and had about half the number of temari sushi (bean sushi) shown in this photo as the finale. I discovered this place on the internet back then, but Instagram wasn't as popular as it is now, and I stopped using it. It seems that cute bean sushi has become popular among a wide range of generations. Similar shops are popping up, and in Kyoto, temari and temaki sushi seem to be popular. I think this is one of the pioneering shops that existed before the trend of various similar shops on Instagram. For lunch, I had the "bean sushi set meal" with three kinds of obanzai first, followed by a soup. The white miso soup with seigoin daikon and kanjitsu carrot was sweet and creamy, a taste that is hard to find in Eastern Japan. Then came the fried taro. Another unique dish that can only be found in Kyoto. During this trip to Kyoto, I had the same soup and fried taro at other restaurants, and I fell in love with them. The sweet taste of the taro, a combination of sweet and moist varieties. It's not easy to find whole fried taro like this, so I plan to visit Kyoto in the winter. Finally, the temari sushi. The toppings were myoga, sea bream, mibuna greens, mackerel, squid, scallop, conger eel, shrimp, inari, daikon, salmon, and shiitake. The vinegar rice was not quite to my liking, but I enjoyed trying out different toppings in this style. I had a great time savoring Kyoto's ingredients and enjoying a wonderful Kyoto experience.
