すきゃるぴー
Located in Teramachi-dori in Kawaramachi, most people probably use public transportation or parking to get here. Upon entering, customers are directed to their designated seats on the left. A glass of water and a cup of Fuku-cha (Japanese tea) are served as defaults. The staff will take your order at the right moment. There is a menu outside the restaurant, but if you hesitate while looking at it, the staff may ask if you are dining alone, so it might be better to check the menu online beforehand if you are not good at making quick decisions. The staff are all female. Interestingly, the temperature of the impressive copper tempura fryer is not confirmed...?
Summer Feast Tempura Bowl (¥1,790)
First of all, the highlight of this tempura dish is the large copper pot used for frying, which can be seen in the open kitchen. And when the tempura is served, the visual presentation and the price are quite impressive. This seems to be the defining feature of this restaurant. As recommended by the staff, the lid can be removed and used as a plate. The tempura batter is crispy, not greasy, and the pieces are generously sized. The rice is firm and delicious. The dipping sauce is just right, not too spicy or too sweet. There is no soup or pickles, but there is pickled burdock and ginger on the counter, which are not too strong in flavor and are much appreciated. Lastly, a clam broth is served, which can be used to make tempura rice soup. Even though there is still dipping sauce left, the combination works well, providing a satisfying end to the meal.
Overall, the tempura dish is of good value considering the quality and the additional perks like the clam broth rice soup. However, the restaurant is usually quite crowded, so the situation may change significantly after the COVID-19 pandemic. There is not much space between seats, and if tourists return, it could get quite cramped. The payment is also required to be made at the back, so passing by the restroom or bumping into staff or other customers is possible. Nevertheless, the experience of enjoying freshly fried tempura in front of a large copper pot, the visual appeal, and the feeling of coming to eat tempura make for a good impression.
Combo Offer
Personally, I feel that it lacks a bit of punch, so I started craving the pudding from Otafuku Coffee. Given that it's in Kawaramachi, I assume everyone has errands to run.
