This day, I found this restaurant through an internet search as there were no evening reservations. It seems to be a branch of Toridoll, originally known for Marugame Seimen, but they seem to have cut ties now. They have a deep fryer at the counter, giving it an authentic feel, and since they specialize in tempura bowls, I thought it might be cost-effective to try it out. I ordered the mountain-sized tempura bowl I saw online, along with a separate plate of shirako tempura. It's winter, after all. Of course, I also ordered some alcohol. A hot sake for ¥490 per cup. Chain restaurants are the best! The frying technique is average... They don't seem to pay much attention to the temperature and fry various ingredients without much concern for oil drainage, resulting in a somewhat greasy texture. Being in Kyoto, I expected a light and crispy batter, but it turned out to have a Kanto-style with egg in it. The sauce is not too heavy, making it quite easy to eat. However, I'm happy that you can get such a splendid anago tempura at this price, and the shirako tempura goes well with the light tempura dipping sauce. Since they are freshly fried, the batter is crispy. The portions are generous, so it's satisfying, and I ended up ordering more alcohol. Fried food is just so good, isn't it?

The tempura bowl was full of volume♪ I couldn't finish the tempura bowl but it was delicious. My favorite tempura is squid, shishamo smelt tempura, and conger eel. This restaurant is very popular among foreigners, and all the customers inside were foreigners, haha. It felt a bit strange to see Japanese people there, haha.

On Saturday around 11 am, I visited the restaurant and had to wait for about 30-45 minutes (mostly foreigners!). I ordered the "Tendon Ro" which is the middle-ranked tempura bowl. I had to write my name on a piece of paper and wait for my order, so I had to wait there. While waiting, I was asked for my order and it was served quickly after entering the restaurant! I also ordered the Iburi Gakko tartar as a side dish (220 yen), but it was so small!! There was barely a tablespoon of it! The shrimp was small, the conger eel was big, and the squid and small dried sardines were delicious! You pour the broth over the tempura halfway through eating, so it's quite filling!! It might be tough for women to finish it. Overall, it was tasty but just average.

It had been a while since my last visit, and I felt that Kyoto was returning to its former status as a tourist city when I saw visitors from overseas writing their names on the waiting list. Fortunately, I only had to wait about 15 minutes before being seated, even though it was just before 6 o'clock in the evening. I was looking forward to enjoying the delicious tempura bowl at Makino's. This time, I ordered the tempura bowl with shrimp and an egg tempura. It was still as delicious as ever. The pickles were tasty, and I love the tea they serve. The main attraction, the tempura bowl, was cooked right in front of me, and the freshly fried tempura was served hot and crispy. The seasoning was also delicious. The addition of sea bream broth and yuzu-flavored vegetable wasabi with rice porridge, which was not available before, helped balance out the richness of the tempura bowl. I will definitely come back again!

The restaurant was full of foreign tourists, and on a weekday night, we had to wait for over 10 groups, about an hour wait. The seating was at the counter, where you can see them frying the tempura right in front of you, and you can enjoy freshly fried tempura. I ordered the colorful vegetable tempura bowl with an egg tempura, which cost around 1300 yen. It was a generous portion for the price. There were so many pieces of tempura, and I was completely full. The tempura was crispy and the vegetables were sweet and delicious. Towards the end, I had the sea bream dashi ochazuke, which had a refreshing yuzu flavor and a delicious broth. The clam soup recommended online also had a great broth and was very tasty. Many of the foreign visitors around me left food, so even men may feel quite full with a regular portion.

I arrived at 12:15 in the afternoon and found a queue of about 10 people. They said it would be about a one-hour wait, but since there was a second floor, I decided to wait for about 30 minutes. The summer tendon had conger eel, shrimp, duck with eggplant, and shishito peppers, and each piece of tempura was so large that it overflowed from the bowl! The umeboshi tartar sauce, which was Kyoto-style, was also highly praised. They mentioned that there was no miso soup included, but recommended the seasoned egg tempura. Even without these extras, the tendon was a perfect 100 points!

I ordered the large portion of rice with popular egg tempura added! Everything was really delicious and I remember being impressed each time! You can also have ochazuke as a finish, so I think even men can get pretty full with the large portion.

I visited around 11:30 and already had to wait 90 minutes, so I wrote my name down at the reception and returned after 90 minutes. From the seats at the counter on the first floor, you can see the craftsmen frying tempura up close, which really stimulates your appetite. Since I was there, I decided to try the "Summer Special Tempura Rice Bowl". The bowl was filled with plenty of tempura, making it very satisfying in terms of volume. Not only the tempura rice bowl, but also the pickled ginger, tea, and miso soup placed on the table were delicious and I was very satisfied.

I was quite hungry so I wanted to eat a hearty meal, so I decided to look for a place to go. When I arrived, there was already a long line, which surprised me. The atmosphere inside the restaurant was very nice. When the first dish I ordered arrived, I was surprised. Each piece of sushi was quite large. The anago (conger eel) was made from a whole fish, which was amazing. The bowl couldn't even close properly. When I started eating, the texture was crispy and very delicious. The volume, taste, everything was perfect. It became one of the restaurants I definitely want to visit again.

Located in the Teramachi-Kyogoku shopping street in Kyoto, this restaurant offers consistently delicious tempura bowls at any time of the day. Even the most affordable tempura bowl comes with a generous serving of freshly fried, large tempura pieces piled high! When I visited after about a year, they had added a complimentary ochazuke service. (The photo shows a vegetable tempura bowl.) The first floor has a counter where you can watch the chef fry the tempura right in front of you. The second floor has a simple, Japanese-style atmosphere with table seating. It seems like it has become popular among inbound tourists as there were many foreigners, resulting in a long line forming before 11 am with a one-hour wait. The lady who appeared to be the owner provides quick and pleasant service. I recommend writing your name down early and taking a stroll around the shopping street while waiting! If you're visiting Kyoto, especially as a pair, this place is recommended. The counter has a nice atmosphere. ^^

This is Makino, a popular restaurant in the Teramachi-Kyogoku shopping street. You can enjoy a high-class dining experience for under 2000 yen, making it a valuable find. I always look forward to their seasonal limited edition tendon, so I frequently check their social media for updates and eagerly awaited the arrival of the autumn tendon. When I visited, I noticed that the kitchen and serving staff were all women. The sight of them skillfully and delicately frying various ingredients in a large pot was very impressive. Without even looking at the menu, I confidently ordered the autumn tendon! The ingredients included abalone (served with a separate seaweed sauce), large prawns, shrimp, oysters wrapped in shiso leaves, squid, ginkgo nuts, shishito peppers, sweet potatoes, seaweed, mushrooms, and possibly more that I can't remember. The crispy yet elegant texture is unique to Makino. In one word, it was delicious. Despite the urge to eat it while it's hot, I savored it slowly even as it cooled down. Lastly, I poured grated yuzu peel, mitsuba, wasabi, and hot tai dashi over the remaining rice and tempura. It was another delightful taste experience. The autumn tendon and miso soup came to a total of 2167 yen including tax. I realized I could have skipped the miso soup if I wanted more tai dashi. The tempura assortment also pairs perfectly with sake. I look forward to enjoying it with hot sake when the weather gets colder. Thank you for the delicious meal!!

Located in Teramachi-dori in Kawaramachi, most people probably use public transportation or parking to get here. Upon entering, customers are directed to their designated seats on the left. A glass of water and a cup of Fuku-cha (Japanese tea) are served as defaults. The staff will take your order at the right moment. There is a menu outside the restaurant, but if you hesitate while looking at it, the staff may ask if you are dining alone, so it might be better to check the menu online beforehand if you are not good at making quick decisions. The staff are all female. Interestingly, the temperature of the impressive copper tempura fryer is not confirmed...? Summer Feast Tempura Bowl (¥1,790) First of all, the highlight of this tempura dish is the large copper pot used for frying, which can be seen in the open kitchen. And when the tempura is served, the visual presentation and the price are quite impressive. This seems to be the defining feature of this restaurant. As recommended by the staff, the lid can be removed and used as a plate. The tempura batter is crispy, not greasy, and the pieces are generously sized. The rice is firm and delicious. The dipping sauce is just right, not too spicy or too sweet. There is no soup or pickles, but there is pickled burdock and ginger on the counter, which are not too strong in flavor and are much appreciated. Lastly, a clam broth is served, which can be used to make tempura rice soup. Even though there is still dipping sauce left, the combination works well, providing a satisfying end to the meal. Overall, the tempura dish is of good value considering the quality and the additional perks like the clam broth rice soup. However, the restaurant is usually quite crowded, so the situation may change significantly after the COVID-19 pandemic. There is not much space between seats, and if tourists return, it could get quite cramped. The payment is also required to be made at the back, so passing by the restroom or bumping into staff or other customers is possible. Nevertheless, the experience of enjoying freshly fried tempura in front of a large copper pot, the visual appeal, and the feeling of coming to eat tempura make for a good impression. Combo Offer Personally, I feel that it lacks a bit of punch, so I started craving the pudding from Otafuku Coffee. Given that it's in Kawaramachi, I assume everyone has errands to run.

I had always been curious about Ten-don Maki-no-san, but there was always a long line whenever I passed by. However, one day around 1 PM on a weekday, I saw only 2 groups waiting in line! I decided to give it a try and was lucky enough to get in quickly. I ordered the popular dish, the "Ten-don (large size)". I was seated at the counter on the first floor where I could watch the tempura being cooked right in front of me. The dish was served with a large anago tempura which was quite impressive. The tempura included shrimp, scallop kakiage, green pepper, eggplant, egg, anago, and seaweed - a total of 7 items. The tempura was delicious, with a crispy batter that was a bit heavy but still tasty. Towards the end, the batter started to feel a bit too much, but luckily they provided dashi and condiments to make ochazuke, which helped to refresh my stomach. The service was attentive and they even grated yuzu peel in front of me. Despite the slightly high price for lunch, the good service and quality made it worth it. I would recommend this place for a slightly luxurious lunch. Thank you for the delicious meal!

The location in Teramachi shopping street is convenient. I ordered the tempura bowl. It had plenty of shrimp, squid, shiitake mushrooms, and kisu fish. The kisu fish was thick and fluffy. The rice was just slightly firm, which I liked because it didn't get too mushy with the sauce. You can add extra sauce if you like. They also offer a complimentary tai fish broth at the end, so you can make ochazuke. It was delicious. Thank you for the meal. If I had one suggestion, it would be to offer tempura as a side dish.

Strolling around Kyoto. It was 10:30 and I was starving. Every restaurant in the shopping street was closed until 11:00... except for one that I found! I visited Tempura Maki-no-san. The atmosphere was nice and the staff were friendly and explained everything well. They fry each tempura piece individually in a large fryer, so it's fresh and delicious. The portion size was great too! I also tried the seasonal pike conger tempura, but it wasn't good, it had a strange smell. I highly recommend the mozzarella cheese tempura though, it was delicious and paired well with yuzu tea! I was very satisfied with the delicious tempura. Thank you for the meal.

Marugame Seimen's authentic tempura rice bowl restaurant. There is always a long line, but this time I was able to get in without waiting because it was right after opening. I ordered the most popular tempura rice bowl, the "Ro". It was nice to see them frying the tempura right in front of the counter. The tempura included shrimp, scallop, green pepper, eggplant, egg, eel, and seaweed, a total of 7 items. The tempura was a bit on the heavier side, but it was delicious and piping hot. The miso soup was also good. I poured the remaining rice with a red snapper broth at the end, and left the restaurant feeling full and satisfied.

This is one of the shops I often visit on Teramachi Street. It's also one of my favorite comfort foods. The menu changes slightly with each season, so you can enjoy it without getting tired every time. There are fewer people on weekday nights, so you can eat slowly. I recommend going on weekdays.

I casually dropped by around 1 pm on a weekday. I was seated right away at the counter on the first floor. There is also a second floor. I had the "Tendon Ro" for 1419 yen. On the table, there were ginger, black condiments, and tempura sauce that you can use freely. The counter seats on the first floor face an open kitchen. It's nice to be able to enjoy freshly fried tempura right in front of you. The tempura bowl looked very satisfying in terms of volume. It had large conger eel, shrimp, squid and small fish tempura, egg, seaweed, green pepper, and eggplant piled on top! You can use the lid as a small plate and enjoy the tempura as you like. All of them were light and tasty with the sweet sauce enhancing the rice. The egg tempura was perfectly runny, of course. The ginger added a refreshing touch. It would be great to be able to enjoy delicious tempura without waiting in line. I would love to go back again. Thank you for the meal.

The beginning flavors were good, but not particularly impressive. I couldn't finish the shirako tempura due to feeling bloated, and personally did not find it very tasty. The atmosphere of the restaurant is very nice, with a sense of cleanliness. The staff provided explanations about the ingredients, which was great.

I visited this place after seeing the always long line even on weekdays. I ordered at the counter on the first floor and watched them fry the tempura right in front of me. The tempura was all crispy, with the fish being light and fluffy. I always thought tempura bowls were heavy, but this one didn't give me heartburn even after finishing it. It was surprisingly light and filling at the same time. The portions were generous and I left feeling satisfied. Thank you for the meal!
