I visited Unzen for breakfast on Sunday (September 3rd). I was staying at a hotel near Shijo Horikawa, so I checked their Instagram for their business hours and arrived at 7:51 am. I was the only one waiting at that time. As more customers arrived, the place started to get crowded. By the time they opened, there were 7 people waiting, but everyone was able to get in on the first round. I sat at a table for two in the back and ordered the Morning Set (600 yen) and the Hotcakes (700 yen). First, the Morning Set arrived with toast and a boiled egg, served with a nostalgic paper napkin. The toast had plenty of margarine spread on it. Shortly after, the coffee arrived, which I realized was actually coffee jelly. After finishing the Morning Set, the Hotcakes finally arrived on the third try. They were stacked in two layers, topped with butter and maple syrup. The pancakes were thick, fluffy, and had a nice bounce to them. They were quite filling, and I was worried if I could finish them all by myself, but with the maple syrup, I managed to eat it all. I probably should have chosen one or the other. I was so full that I skipped lunch. By the time I left around 7:40 am, there were some empty seats, but they quickly filled up with new customers. Thank you for the meal.

The 5th oldest coffee shop in town. Usually only open on Sundays, so you might have to wait in line due to the constant flow of customers. Affordable, delicious, and has a great atmosphere, so I recommend it! I arrived around 7 pm on a holiday and the place was packed. I waited for over 30 minutes to get a seat. However, after I entered, a few groups left and there were a few empty seats for a while. It seems like things calm down around 7:30-8 pm when the first round of customers leave. Here's what I had: Pizza Toast ¥700, Coffee ¥550, Pancakes ¥700. Prices may have gone up a bit due to the current situation, but it's still relatively cheap! The most popular item is the pancakes, which take about 20 minutes to cook. Many people ordered a breakfast dish while waiting for their pancakes. The pancakes are thick but not huge, so it's best to share them as a dessert if you go with two or more people. Honestly, waiting in line was a bit of a hassle, even though it's affordable. But if you can get in without waiting, it's really nice. The retro atmosphere is lovely. Overall, it was a good experience!

Visited the popular cafe "Unzen" in Kyoto, which was established in 1935 and is apparently the 5th oldest in the city. It's quite difficult to visit since it's only open on Sundays. The coffee (¥500) was good, although a bit difficult to drink. The hotcakes (¥700) were dense and had a strong bounce to them. The pizza toast had a thick slice of toast, making it chewy. The cheese wasn't completely melted at the bottom, but that simplicity added to its charm. It was delicious and had a nostalgic feel of a classic old cafe.

I had been wanting to go there for a long time but didn't have many Sundays off. Finally, I was able to go. I ordered the breakfast set and pancakes. The set included toast, coffee, and a boiled egg, all of which were delicious. The pancakes had English writing on them which was lovely, and both were thick and I was able to finish them. The atmosphere inside the restaurant and the exterior were both great, and I could feel the history.

Junkissa Unzen-san. This place is famous for its hotcakes, so I also went for the hotcakes! They were thick and two layers, very filling. The hotcakes weren't too sweet, more like pancakes. I poured all the maple syrup on top and was satisfied! (laughs)

Jun Kissaten Unsen is a rare cafe that only opens on Sundays (sometimes Saturdays). The atmosphere is lovely, with a vintage coffee shop feel and music playing from records. After enjoying a morning coffee, the highlight of today's visit was definitely the master's special hotcakes. Made with Hokkaido flour and carefully cooked on a copper plate, the hotcakes had "Thank you for your kindness" stamped on them. The crispy exterior and fluffy interior made for a delightful taste experience. It was so delicious! Thank you for the meal.

A Showa retro-style coffee shop with a lot of nostalgia. It seems to be open only on Sundays. The storefront has a brazier turned into a fish tank, where goldfish are kept. A child in line was watching them with interest. Inside, the shop is narrow and long, with retro leather sofas and aged tables at each seat. The shop is small and quite popular, so there may be some waiting time. There are many records on display, playing nostalgic songs chosen by the owner. I ordered a blend coffee and pancakes, while my daughter ordered an iced milk coffee. The pancakes were thick and fluffy, perfect for sharing between two people. The atmosphere, coffee, and pancakes were great, but the service was lacking. The waitress was polite but too reserved, it would be better if she had a more cheerful and friendly attitude.

This is a cafe that has been around for a long time. It is said to be the 5th oldest cafe in Kyoto city. It is only open on Sundays and holidays, but sometimes it opens on Saturdays as well (check the official SNS for opening days). It is a very popular place, so it's good to visit when you have time. The cafe is located a 7-minute walk from Hankyu Karasuma Station and Shijo Station on the Karasuma Line. It is located at the intersection of Ayanokoji Street and Nishinotoindori Street. The building has a red brick roof with the logo "Coffee Unzen" on it. Arrived in front of the cafe at 12:08 on Sunday. There were already 4 people lined up when I arrived. It seemed that we couldn't go inside yet, so I waited outside while reading. After about 30 minutes, we were guided inside. The place we were taken to was a round table for 4 people at the back. The lamp at the foot and the colorful tiled floor create a somewhat modern atmosphere. In the center of the table, there was a stove. Behind the chairs were various interiors such as a TV, speaker, and lamp. The overall atmosphere is like a calm living room at home. There are also table seats for 2-4 people, and there are no counter seats. The clientele is mostly young people. Pancakes and curry rice seemed to be popular (probably because it was lunchtime). The hotcakes are stacked with 2 pieces, making them about 5cm thick. There is a "Thank you for your kindness" brand in the center. Butter and syrup are served separately. The dough is slightly dull in color and heavy. It has a chewy and fluffy texture with a hint of sweetness. It is recommended to spread butter on it to enhance the flavor by 30%. However, for 700 yen, it's quite generous. The coffee surprised me with its sharp acidity from the first sip. But at the same time, the bitterness is strong, and the aftertaste is refreshing. A fresh taste unlike any other coffee I've had before. I was overwhelmed by the unexpected popularity, but I finally fulfilled my wish. I would like to visit again during the morning hours next time.

I often passed by this shop without noticing it blending into the old town scenery. Then I found out they are only open on Sundays and saw the line forming. Since it was close to my place in Kyoto, I decided to check it out. I lined up from around 9 am and got in after a 30-minute wait. We sat at a table for four in the back, surrounded by a round table with a stone oil heater. The smell of the heater gave off a nostalgic Showa era vibe, along with the ceiling windows and shaded lamps creating a cozy atmosphere. I ordered the Egg Baker Set, while my companion had the Egg Sandwich and coffee. The Egg Baker Set came with thick toast, half-boiled Tanago eggs, oil sardines, broccoli, bacon, and black pepper on fluffy bread. The combination of saltiness and half-boiled egg created a rich breakfast experience. The coffee, served in a small cup, had a strong first sip but a smooth flavor. We also tried the Egg Sandwich, which had a generous portion of egg and ham with a refreshing lettuce finish. Kyoto's egg dishes never disappoint. I initially thought they were just casually open on Sundays, but it turned out to be a cafe with great attention to detail. The shop played records, setting a calm tone for a relaxing holiday start.

A hidden coffee shop that is only open on Sundays. Most of the seating is in 4-person booths, so even if there is only one customer, they take up a whole booth, which slows down turnover. The atmosphere and music in the shop are nostalgic, like stepping back in time to the Showa era. I ordered a pizza toast for 650 yen and a coffee for 400 yen. The toast was thick and turned into a pizza. I prefer my toast a bit crispier. The taste was decent, but the focus was on the atmosphere and rarity.

On January 9, 2023, I visited the nostalgic retro coffee shop "Kohi no Mise Unzen," located about a 3-minute walk from Kyoto Municipal Subway Shijo Station. It is the fifth oldest existing coffee shop in Kyoto and was even used as a filming location for the movie "Nankyoku Monogatari." Upon entering the shop, you will find low tables and leather sofas, creating a nostalgic atmosphere. The shop is a popular gathering place for regular customers in the morning, and it is loved by a wide range of age groups. I ordered a coffee for ¥400 and hotcakes for ¥700. Ten minutes later, the hotcakes arrived, but they were more like pancakes! They were perfectly round with a stylish "Thank you for your kindness" engraving. The hotcakes were fluffy with a subtly sweet flavor, delicious even when eaten plain and maintaining their texture over time. I tried them with the provided butter and honey, and they were just as tasty as I imagined. Personally, I prefer them without any toppings. I would love to visit this classic retro coffee shop again for their delicious hotcakes.

I visited a coffee shop called "Kohi no Mise Unzen" on Shijo Street that caught my interest. I arrived about 30 minutes after opening, but it was already full, so I waited outside in the cold morning. When a table opened up, I was seated and ordered a coffee. The retro interior and jazz music playing in the background gave the atmosphere of a classic coffee shop, which was nice. Enjoying a rich cup of coffee in that setting felt like a small happiness. By the way, I didn't order it myself, but they offer a morning set for an additional charge.

I revisited Cafe Unzen for breakfast on Saturday, July 23rd. I saw on Instagram that they would be open for the Gion Festival's post-festival on July 23rd and 24th. When I arrived around 7:30, there were still some empty seats. I sat at a table for two by the back. I hadn't noticed last time, but the back area has a lovely spot with a round table where the morning sun shines in through a skylight. I ordered the morning set, but then remembered I wanted to get the hotcakes as well. Oh well. It arrived in about 10 minutes. Thick toast, boiled egg, and coffee. The toast came with red bean paste. The egg was a bit hard to peel, but the red bean toast was delicious. Thank you for the meal.

Before asking the owner, someone happened to ask on my behalf if the nearby cafe was still open or closed. It turns out that the cafe has been around since the early Showa period, possibly even before the war. The current owner's grandmother was mentioned in a coffee shop guidebook, which sparked the interest of the person asking. The owner, who also works a full-time job, only opens on Sundays, holidays, and occasionally on Saturdays to preserve the historical cafe left by their relatives. You can check the owner's Twitter for the opening days. It's impressive that the cafe has been running for almost 100 years with little change since its establishment. For fans of classic cafes, it's a delightful atmosphere. The menu is kept simple, with unique items like "cold coffee" only available in the summer. First-time customers might be turned down, but younger customers seem to enjoy the hotcakes. The cafe also offers curry and pilaf. I ordered the pizza toast, which was surprisingly gourmet and different from the usual. The thick layer of cheese and flavorful tomato sauce on the bread was delicious. The owner, who is skilled at cooking, personally prepares all the dishes with the help of one assistant. The cafe is known as a filming location for the movie "Antarctica," with photos of the actors displayed inside. If you're a movie buff like me, this cafe is a must-visit.

It's Sunday morning. The hotel I'm staying at doesn't include breakfast, so I decided to have breakfast at a cafe nearby. I checked and found a cafe called Unzen that serves morning meals. I confirmed their schedule and saw that they are closed on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, which means they only open on Sundays. According to the owner's Instagram, the cafe opens at 7:00 am on February 20th, so I went to another cafe called Kissa Tirol near Nijo Castle on Saturday and visited Unzen on Sunday. The cafe is located at the corner of Nishioin-dori and Ayanokoji-dori. When I arrived at 7:25 am, there was no line, but the cafe was full, so I had to wait outside. After a while, I was able to enter as they finished cleaning up. The interior of the cafe is dimly lit and has a retro atmosphere. The owner's Instagram mentioned that the cafe was established in 1935 (Showa 10) and is the fifth oldest surviving cafe in Kyoto. The owner works as a salaryman and runs the cafe as a part-time job only on Sundays. They occasionally open on holidays or Saturdays, so it's best to check in advance before visiting. The customers were a mix of regulars and travelers. The regulars were relaxing and reading the newspaper, while some were discussing articles from the Kyoto Shimbun with the owner. The travelers were taking photos with their phones. The menu was posted on the table, but I didn't notice it at first. I ordered the morning set as I had planned. The person next to me had a thick pancake served to them. It looked delicious, but I read that it takes time to prepare. However, for 500 yen, I might try the pancakes next time. After about 10 minutes, I was served thick toast, boiled egg, and coffee. The toast was generously spread with margarine. The coffee was rich and slightly bitter with a good flavor. Since there was no sharing of tables and no one waiting, I decided to leave. Thank you for the meal.

14:10. There were 2 groups waiting outside. We were finally seated around 14:30. The interior of the restaurant had a faint smell of oil stove and was dimly lit. The leather sofas were soft and plush, but didn't feel like sinking in. We ordered pancakes and coffee, which took about 40 minutes to arrive. When they finally came, the aroma of freshly baked pancakes filled the air, making us hungry. The pancakes had a slightly crispy surface, with some parts being crunchy. The inside was fluffy, and would easily collapse if not cut gently with a knife. Served with butter and maple syrup. The butter was perfectly soft, with a hint of saltiness and richness that made it delicious. The coffee was dark roasted. Next time, I might try the cheese toast. The rating of 3.5 takes into account the long wait time we were aware of beforehand.

I can only visit on Sundays, so it's hard to come by, but I stopped by for breakfast in November when they were open on a holiday. It was almost full, but I managed to get a seat right away. My wife had the morning set with thick toast, strong coffee, and a boiled egg. I had pancakes and a cream soda. We sat at a table with a stove in the middle, a bit cramped but warm. The pancakes were thick and came in a set of two. I enjoyed them with butter, syrup, and a "thank you for your kindness" stamp. Eating the pancakes made me feel like a child again. The cream soda in the middle was delicious. I had a great time and would like to visit again.

Located in the southeast corner of Ayanokoji Street and Nishinotoindori Street, near Ayasen Park in Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto City. The exterior has a traditional and simple appearance, while the interior maintains a classical and calm atmosphere. The menu mainly consists of coffee and juice drinks, with a small selection of toast and sandwiches. The sweets menu is focused on fluffy pancakes, which can be ordered as part of a morning set until 11 a.m. The pancakes are thick and fluffy, with a soft and moist texture. They are imprinted with a design on the surface and are served with maple syrup for a gentle sweetness that complements the pancakes well. The coffee has a robust and slightly bitter flavor, with a lingering aftertaste. The cafe is open only on Sundays, but its dedication to roasting its own coffee beans is evident. The diverse clientele includes young people and tourists, making it a beloved establishment in the community.

I visited a cafe called "Cafe Unsen" in Kyoto, which I came across in a solo travel guidebook. The cafe is located between Shijo Karasuma and Omiya. It was established in 1935, and the current owner only operates the cafe on Sundays (sometimes on Saturdays and holidays as well). So, it's a good idea to check their operating hours on Twitter or Facebook before visiting. The atmosphere inside the cafe is calm and slightly dimly lit. I ordered hotcakes and a cup of coffee. The hotcakes took a while to be served, so I spent my time leisurely reading about the cafe's history and enjoying the cozy ambiance. The hotcakes were thick and fluffy, served with red bean paste on the side as a special treat that day. They were delicious, especially when topped with butter and syrup. The milk coffee I ordered was served with milk on the side, allowing me to enjoy both black and milk coffee. The coffee had a rich flavor with a hint of bitterness, which was complemented well by the milk. Visiting this cafe, which only operates on Sundays, was a unique experience that I enjoyed during my trip.
