The other day, I visited the wagashi shop Gunrindo at Gokokuji, mainly for the purpose of enjoying their famous Daifuku. According to my wife, their Daifuku is a specialty and is considered one of Japan's top three Daifuku, which sells out by late morning. When I arrived, there was already a line forming with about five people waiting. After a 10-minute wait, I entered the shop. The shop's main business is making mochi sweets, with the retail sales being a secondary activity. Aside from their famous Daifuku, they also offer red bean mochi, Mizuyokan, Mitarashi dango, and Kanoko. Due to my schedule, I couldn't purchase anything that required refrigeration, so I bought two Daifuku and two red bean mochi. I can't remember the exact prices, but I believe the Daifuku was around 240 yen and the red bean mochi was about 200 yen each. Upon trying them, I found the Daifuku to have a delicate yet sturdy mochi with a generous amount of salty red beans. The sweetness of the red bean paste was well-balanced by the salty red beans, making it delicious without being overwhelming. Both my wife and I finished them in no time. I used to think that the Daifuku from Demachi Futaba in Kyoto was the best, but the refined taste of Gunrindo provided a different yet equally delicious experience, making them both exceptional. I also tried the red bean mochi that I had frozen for later. It was also delicious, with a crispy exterior and a soft interior, blending perfectly with the salty red beans. It's amazing how the addition of sweet red bean paste transforms it into a delicacy called Daifuku. By the way, if you reheat the red bean mochi too much, it may become too sticky, so I found that lightly defrosting it and then toasting it in a toaster for about 2 minutes worked well. The shop has various notes for customers: do not line up before opening, consider coming in the afternoon, large purchases may be limited in quantity, the shop does not have a website or online ordering, and taking photos inside the shop is strictly prohibited.Yet, there are many pictures of the interior of the shop.
