In Kyoto, for some reason, I ate Osaka's famous kushikatsu. On the third day of my trip to Nara and Kyoto, my schedule was packed with places I wanted to visit, so I ended up skipping lunch and before I knew it, it was already evening. After visiting Shimogamo Shrine and buying traditional Japanese sweets at Demachi Futaba, one of Kyoto's most popular confectionery shops, I finally had time to eat. As I was strolling around Demachiyanagi, I came across a restaurant that was open at the oddly specific time of 4:30 pm. It was a lifesaver for me, as I was starving after not eating anything since morning. It was a weekday during Golden Week, and I arrived at 4:30 pm with no other customers in sight. Today's order included beef for ¥100, lotus root for ¥100, pickled ginger for ¥100, pork for ¥100, cheese fish cake for ¥100, wiener sausage for ¥100, young chicken for ¥150, smelt fish for ¥150, squid for ¥150, and pike conger eel for ¥200. We also had two glasses of draft beer for ¥580 each. It was quite cheap. They fry the skewers right in front of you. The batter was just right, crispy and light. Even at this point, the kushikatsu was already delicious. The meat and pickled ginger were a bit tough to chew, but considering the price, it was more than satisfactory. The pickled ginger was in whole pieces, providing a spicy and slightly sour flavor that was very tasty. The lotus root was soft and delicious. The squid was tender and blended well with the batter. Overall, the non-meat items seemed to be of higher quality...? Anyway, the cost performance was excellent. The specialty dish is curry ramen, a Chinese noodle dish with a curry base. Thank you for the meal!
