I love the cafe on the second floor of Gion Nishikawa in Gion, which I can't get enough of. Last time, I bought a Christmas cake and predicted that this place would definitely become a hit, haha. This time, let's talk about the lunch and souvenirs at NISHI CAFE. The lunch costs 3800 yen including tax. Although it's technically a cafe, I'll start by saying it's cafe food, but considering the quality and variety of the menu, the price is actually quite reasonable. In fact, considering that some items overlap with the menu of the first-floor restaurant, I would say it's the top-tier in terms of cafe food. Specifically, dishes like sukiyaki and Inaniwa udon have been featured in the menu recently. The sweets are also incredibly delicious, which has always been a highlight of Nishikawa's offerings. It's like a combination of Kyoto kaiseki cuisine and cafe food, a truly wonderful concept. So, although it may seem a bit pricey, if you're comparing it to the pseudo-Japanese food for tourists, why not spend 3800 yen to enjoy authentic kaiseki cuisine and incredibly delicious sweets served in Hermes dishes, making your Kyoto trip truly elegant? And for those who still find 3800 yen expensive, I have another suggestion. The egg sandwich here is dramatically delicious! When you think of an egg sandwich, you might imagine mashed boiled eggs, but in Kyoto, it often refers to a sandwich with a slice of Japanese omelet. There's a famous story about how the taste of this sandwich has been passed down from the now-closed Corona cafe in Kiyamachi to the regulars at the Madrague cafe. What happens when a serious Japanese restaurant puts their spin on this egg sandwich? I had it as a snack in the evening, but you can also enjoy it at the restaurant. It's priced at 1300 yen, which might seem surprising. However, it's not your typical heavy sandwich. While you can smell the blue cheese, it doesn't overpower the main ingredient, the egg. This sandwich is perfect for those coming from afar to enjoy on their return Shinkansen ride. It's not as expensive as mackerel sushi, and with a substantial portion, it's quite a deal at 1300 yen for two servings. It's large, but since it's a sandwich, it's easy to eat. So, this year, the Gion Festival will likely show the lively atmosphere of the past, and Nishikawa may be fully booked in July, but NISHI CAFE might be unexpectedly worth a visit. Lunch requires reservations by the day before. Oh, I give up. Highly recommended! Just for your reference.
