I visited for lunch on the first day of my trip to Kyoto. I arrived at 11:00, the opening time, and was the fourth group in line. I ordered the luxurious seafood tempura from the menu. There were 16 varieties, and even though I don't like vegetables, I was able to eat eggplant and okra for the first time in decades. They were surprisingly delicious without any unpleasant taste. The tai-chazuke as the finishing touch had a great broth and was delicious.

While wandering around Gion in search of lunch, I stumbled upon this restaurant. I was shocked to see that their lunch prices start at 3000 yen! I thought it must be a mistake, but it wasn't. And you have to order before entering the restaurant. Probably because many people change their minds once they see the prices. It's no wonder, considering the quality of the skewers and the way they are fried, that they charge 3000 yen. This restaurant must be making a good profit.

I visited GW. I arrived a little after 11 o'clock and was the 12th in line for a table, so I had to wait a bit before being seated. The wait for the food after ordering was quite long, so be aware of that. The tempura was elaborate and delicious, so I understand why it took a while. The meal included tempura, rice cooked with sea bream broth, miso soup, sea bream for ochazuke, as well as oboro tofu and matcha pudding. The tempura portion was huge, so be careful! The rice was delicious and impressive. However, considering the cost, the overall value may not be the best (3000 yen). Thank you for the meal!

I went around 11:00 for lunch on a regular day. Only the counter was available and I didn't have to wait in line. I chose from the set menu and ordered using a smartphone system. The portion size was amazing. I thought it would be nice if they also offered a set menu for elderly customers. On my way out, I received a small bottle of salt as a souvenir. The restaurant had a lively atmosphere with many young staff members.

Near Yasaka Shrine, there is a shop known for its bite-sized tempura skewers. The presentation of various tempura pieces neatly arranged on a plate is quite charming. This shop is located in Gion, a famous geisha district in Kyoto. Gion is well-known for its geisha. The reason why the tempura at this shop is bite-sized is to accommodate geisha with small appetites. The menu includes options like "Seafood Tempura Set," "Kyoto Red Chicken Tempura Set," and "Colorful Vegetable Tempura Set." Each set comes with tempura, rice (free refills), soft tofu, a small side dish, and a bowl of red snapper broth. The broth can be poured over rice for a delicious tea soup. On this occasion, I ordered the "Kyoto Red Chicken Tempura Set" for 2,000 yen. It included six pieces of red chicken tempura, eight vegetable tempura pieces, and special Kyoto-style yuba and sesame fu tempura. The tempura had a crispy coating and flavorful, fresh ingredients. It was enjoyable to eat with salt or dipped in the broth. It's worth noting that you cannot order tempura dishes separately or customize the number of tempura pieces. So, make sure to come with an empty stomach when visiting this shop.

I had Toritenzen. It was fun to eat with various seasonings, but 6 pieces of chicken were too much and I got a little tired of it. In the end, it was at the level of eating with determination...! The oil also made me feel heavy in my stomach, and most of the customers in the restaurant left some. I managed to finish it with determination.

I ordered a vegetable tempura course with 16 pieces, but it was quite heavy... Also, I was quite bothered by the waitress. She had long hair tied into two ponytails and it kept getting in the way, touching the dishes as she served them and even brushing against my food while moving dishes on the neighboring table... It was disappointing. As for the food, the vegetable tempura was delicious! It came with ponzu sauce, 3 types of salt, and rice with flavorful sea bream broth, pickled greens, and tea rice with sea bream broth were amazing! The vegetable course was priced at 2,640 yen. I went with a junior colleague who had been there before, and she mentioned that the prices had gone up. It would be nice if they had a lunch option with fewer tempura pieces.

It was located near Yasaka Shrine, making it easy to visit during sightseeing. I've seen it a lot on social media recently, so I wanted to try it out. They serve a dish called "Maiko-han's Ochobo-kuchi" which includes bite-sized and elegant tempura. The menu includes three options: Seafood Tempura Set for 2,200 yen, Kyoto Red Chicken Tempura Set for 2,000 yen, and Colorful Vegetable Tempura Set for 1,800 yen. I chose the Colorful Vegetable Tempura Set which consisted of 16 types of seasonal vegetables. The small size allowed me to enjoy a variety of flavors. I tried it with three types of salt (matcha salt, yuzu shichimi salt, Kyoto salt) and a sweet tempura sauce. Even when it cooled down, the tempura remained light and crispy, and it was delicious. The dashi tea-soaked rice with sea bream broth was so delicious that I ended up having seconds. I also received a cute little salt as a souvenir, which made me happy. ❤️

I visited for lunch on a holiday. When I arrived at 12 o'clock, there was a long line. I waited for about 2 and a half hours before entering. I ordered the Kyoto Akadai chicken toriten set meal. The portion was quite large, and I ate a lot! It's a set course so you can't choose the skewers, which is a shame, but the taste was just delicious. The Kyoto tofu with dashi tea pickles was a great match and I enjoyed it very much! ✨

Located on the first floor of a building, this small shop offers incredibly voluminous and delicious obanzai (home-style Japanese dishes). You can choose from a variety of seasonal ingredients, fish, and meat, with several types of condiments available for you to enjoy in different ways. There are also counter seats where you can watch the food being prepared while you eat. It may get crowded at times, so it might be smoother if you call ahead. The flavors are refined, yet the portions are generous, making it a highly recommended dining experience.

I visited a restaurant I was curious about during lunchtime and luckily there was a seat available. You can choose from 4 different combinations - vegetable main, seafood main, meat main, or a mix. I chose the mix to enjoy a variety of flavors. Whichever you choose, you get 16 types of skewers. I had the seasonal mixed tempura meal: - Sea bream dashi rice (served in a traditional wooden box) with unlimited refills, delicious with dashi poured over and turned into tea rice - Kyoto tofu - Appetizers: pounded burdock root, pickled mustard greens with wasabi - Sea bream dashi soup with unlimited refills - 16 types of one-bite skewer tempura, including tofu skin, pumpkin, eggplant, sesame gluten, okra, onion, sweet potato, long green pepper, snow crab (seasonal seafood), blowfish (seasonal seafood), salmon, shrimp, sea bream, and chicken tempura x3 - Salts: plain salt, matcha salt, Kyoto salt, yuzu shichimi pepper salt - Ponzu sauce - Sweetened honey tempura sauce, which was incredibly delicious The one-bite size made it easy to eat, and even when they cooled down, they remained crispy. The menu states that the order is made fresh, so it might take some time. I recommend going with extra time to spare. The staff was very energetic and lovely. I received a gift of salt on my way out, which made me happy. Thank you for the wonderful meal.

After receiving a prayer at the Tsubaki Shrine, I searched online for a place to have lunch in Kyoto and found a place called Maiko Meshi, offering 16 skewers of tempura for 1800 yen. However, when I visited, the prices were actually higher, ranging from 2700 yen for vegetable skewers to 2800 yen for seafood skewers and 2750 yen for meat skewers. I ordered two seafood skewers for 5500 yen, which included rice cooked in sea bream broth, sea bream tofu, pickles, and 16 skewers of tempura. The oil used for frying was of poor quality, making me feel heavy and my companion even felt dizzy after eating 3 skewers. We managed to recover with sea bream broth ochazuke. The overall experience was disappointing due to the poor quality of the oil used for frying, despite the good quality of the ingredients. I would not consider revisiting unless they improve the oil they use. Other customers seemed to have similar expressions. The restaurant was understaffed with only 8 staff members for around 10 customers, so they should consider investing in better quality oil rather than excessive labor costs.

Seasonal mixed tempura set with 16 pieces of bite-sized tempura skewers. Tempura includes yuba, pumpkin, eggplant, sesame gluten, okra, onion, sweet potato, shishito pepper, snow crab, blowfish, salmon, shrimp, and sea bream. Chicken tempura with soy sauce comes in a set of 3 skewers. Tempura is served with three types of salt: green tea salt, Kyoto salt, and yuzu shichimi salt. You can enjoy unlimited refills of rice cooked in sea bream broth. The meal also includes sea bream sashimi, pickled vegetables, grated yam tofu, and various side dishes. Finish off with a bowl of rice in sea bream broth topped with tempura and sea bream meat, turning it into a delicious ochazuke. Overall, it's a great deal at Maiko Meshi Gion Honten.

You can enjoy very photogenic dishes here. At first, you might think it's just about the appearance, but they are actually delicious. You can try a variety of dishes in small portions, with three types of salt, ponzu sauce, special tempura dipping sauce, rice cooked in sea bream broth, sea bream sashimi, and sea bream dashi tea rice. Women will surely be delighted! The tempura was crispy on the outside and satisfying. The yuba tempura had a crispy exterior and a creamy, sweet yuba inside. I was impressed by how well it was fried.

During the peak autumn foliage season, I wasn't sure how long the wait would be... So I arrived a little after 10:30 before the opening time. There were already a couple of groups waiting in front of me! The line kept getting longer before the opening. For lunch, I ordered the Chicken Tempura Set. The broth here is so delicious! It's tasty on its own, and pouring it over rice makes it like a delicious broth tea. The tempura pieces were small and cute, so I finished them quickly. The honey dipping sauce for the tempura was a new and tasty flavor for me. They also offer three types of salt, ponzu, and honey dipping sauce, so you can enjoy different tastes. The restaurant is close to the station and also near Yasaka Shrine. I would love to visit this place again when I go back to Kyoto.

I came across a recommendation for a restaurant in Kyoto, so I decided to go. When I arrived, there were 7 groups waiting ahead of me. Even though it was a weekday, there were quite a few people! I wrote my name down and waited for about 30 minutes. When my turn came, I sat at the counter where they fried the tempura right in front of me, which was fun! There were many types of salt to choose from, and they offered 16 different kinds of tempura, from vegetables to seafood. They also served rice cooked with sea bream broth, which you could have seconds of. Finally, I had the rice in broth, which was sweet and delicious! I highly recommend visiting this place at least once.

Great cost performance! For 4200 yen, the portion size was really good. The broth in the sea bream tea pickled dish was delicious. The palate cleanser was like a Japanese-style stew, a taste I had never tried before but it was delicious. The skewers were not heavy at all and easy to eat, with various sauces so you don't get tired of them.

Lunch in Kyoto! A tempura skewer restaurant ^ - ^ They use Kyoto vegetables for their tempura skewers. It was cute and delicious. Since they use vegetable skewers, it wasn't too heavy! But they also had fish and shrimp, so the volume was just right. There were various types of salt, so it didn't get boring. I would like to come back again. The meal was healthy with side dishes like bean rice and salad (^∇^) There was a bit of a wait, but depending on the time of day, you may have to wait quite a bit.
