We came all the way from a distant place to enjoy sightseeing in Arashiyama with a friend, and then moved to Kawaramachi where we walked through Nishiki Market. My friend requested to eat Kyoto vegetables, so we searched on Tabelog and called this restaurant. The first time we called, they were fully booked for early hours but had availability for later hours. We initially gave up, but when we inquired at another restaurant, they suggested even later hours. The friendly and helpful response from the man when we called this restaurant made us decide to go there after all. A friend who was helping me search for restaurants made the second call and we visited for dinner.
The restaurant has a deep layout with a glass-walled kitchen visible as soon as you enter. We were guided to a private room with tatami mats, which was spacious and had a scroll hanging in the alcove and a small garden visible when opening the shoji screens, giving a perfect image of the streets of Pontocho. My friend from out of town was delighted, saying it felt like a Kyoto restaurant!
The menu had many options, all looking delicious, so we were indecisive. Since we can come back anytime, we let our sightseeing friend choose what they wanted to eat. We also asked the staff for some Kyoto-style dishes. Here are the dishes we ordered:
- Three-color nama-fu (wheat gluten) tango: Cute and photo-worthy, smooth and creamy texture with flavorful miso.
- Kujo green onion dashimaki tamago: Fluffy dashimaki tamago with a gentle sauce, a comforting dish.
- Ebiimo (taro) tempura with matcha salt: A desired dish by my friend, with a pleasantly textured ebiimo.
- Chicken soboro ankake gohan: A hot pot of rice with plenty of vegetables and chicken soboro, a comforting dish.
- Beef tendon stew: Tenderly cooked beef tendon stew with two types of konjac.
- Kumiage yuba (tofu skin) and sea bream carpaccio: A recommended dish by the staff, with a refreshing combination of yuba, vegetables, and tender sea bream.
- Kagawa udon wrapped in beef loin with sweet soy sauce flavor: A creative dish with soft Kagawa udon wrapped in beef, a unique combination.
All the dishes were delicious, and my friend from out of town was very pleased. Despite the large group we came with, the staff was very polite, smiling, and provided attentive service, changing plates and showing consideration. I am truly grateful for the experience. The restaurant also offers Kawadoko dining in the summer, although reservations may be hard to come by. If you are going with someone special, consider this restaurant as a candidate. Thank you for the delicious meal!
