Hidden in a narrow alley in Kawaramachi, there is a wonderful restaurant called "Shokudo Ruins" that offers great value set meals of casual French cuisine. The restaurant may not have a lot of reviews, but the food is delicious, the interior is stylish with a courtyard, and the service by the staff is impeccable. I have visited multiple times, but this is the first time I am writing about it. When dining in Kawaramachi, be sure to check out this restaurant! It is located about a 5-minute walk from Kawaramachi Station. Situated in a narrow alley filled with various dining establishments, "Shokudo Ruins" stands quietly. The name "Ruins" in the restaurant's name means "ruins" in English. What a fantastic name for a bistro in ruins! The interior is renovated from an old folk house, exuding a warm and calming atmosphere with wooden elements. For individuals or couples, the counter seats are recommended. There are also large table seats for groups. The staff are proficient in foreign languages, possibly due to being featured in foreign tourist guidebooks, which is why there were quite a few foreign customers. The counter seats offer close interactions with the staff, making conversations enjoyable. The menu mainly features meat dishes such as duck, pork, and chicken, along with sausages, pate de campagne, and other dishes that pair well with wine. In addition to meat, there are also fish dishes and desserts available. I started with a toast of Sangria (600 yen) and a draft beer (500 yen). I ordered the Carrot Râpée with Orange and Nuts (600 yen) as a safe choice. The refreshing orange flavor stimulates the appetite even more. The finely shredded texture is also delightful. There was a "recommended set" that changes daily or weekly, so I opted for that. The set includes soup and a main dish for 2600 yen, or you can add an appetizer for 3500 yen. Both sets come with bread. I chose the 2600 yen set. First, the soup arrived. It was a chestnut soup with a sweet chestnut aroma complemented by the rich scent of mushrooms, creating an incredibly delicious flavor. There seemed to be a hint of coffee fragrance, adding a deep richness to the taste. The craftsmanship behind this dish was evident. Then, the bread. It was a freshly baked, hot, hard bread. The attention to detail in the bread was evident, and it was delicious. If the soup and bread were delicious, the main dish must be delicious too! The anticipation was high. Finally, the long-awaited main dish, "Roast Venison," arrived! Cooked carefully to perfection, the meat was thick yet tender enough to be easily cut with a knife. The more you chew, the more umami seeps out, making it exquisite! The seasonal vegetables on the same plate were fresh and tasty. The quality of this set for 2600 yen is amazing. The interior is dimly lit with a moody atmosphere, perfect for a date! The service is impeccable, the food is incredibly delicious, and satisfaction is guaranteed! This is a favorite restaurant that I would love to visit again and again. Be sure to make a reservation in advance before visiting.
