I went to "Fuunji Shinjuku Main Store" in Shinjuku. Fuunji is a popular tsukemen restaurant with three locations in Tokyo, ranked in the top 100 on Tabelog from 2018 to 2022. It has a Tabelog rating of 3.78 and is a very popular restaurant. *As of September 14, 2023. Originally, I was planning to go to "Udon Shin" nearby, but I gave up because the wait was over 2 hours. As a last resort, I decided to go to Fuunji, which always has long lines, but surprisingly there was no line outside so I decided to go in. I went around 7 pm on a weekday and there were about 5 people waiting inside. The turnover rate is fast, so I was able to sit down in about 10 minutes. I ordered the Special Tsukemen for 1150 yen*with less noodles. The noodles were thick with a strong chewy texture, which I personally liked. The soup, despite its appearance, was rich but light. Many tsukemen places are too salty, but this one was not salty at all, which was a good impression. It had fish powder on top, and as you gradually dissolved it, the seafood flavor came through subtly. The toppings included nori, green onions, chashu, menma, and egg. The chashu was melt-in-your-mouth tender, and there was a generous amount of it along with the menma. I added some soup wari (soup dilution) using the provided vinegar, and even then, the soup was not too strong, so it was enjoyable to drink with a light taste. I had imagined it would be much richer, so it was surprising that it was not, making it suitable even for those who don't like heavy tsukemen. However, it may have lacked a bit of impact. If I had waited for hours, my expectations might not have been met. But it was delicious. Although there is always a long line, maybe evenings are a good time to visit? I recommend this place to those who want to eat tsukemen in Shinjuku.
