"Delicious Curry" (commonly known) @ Shimokitazawa
Located a 3-minute walk from Shimokitazawa Station North Exit, this curry specialty store opened in August 2020 in Shimokitazawa, known as the "curry town." Operated by the curry division of the apparel brand "CUNE," this shop is famous for its original creative curries. Despite being located in a bustling area of the northern district with vintage clothing stores, the store is not facing the street but tucked away in a building. The only indication of the store's presence is a small square lamp on the street wall with "← Curry" written on it. The phrase "Delicious Curry" has become a nickname for the store, as it does not have an official name. The idea is to compete based on taste and word of mouth, without relying on a name or sign. The menu includes the classic "Chicken Curry with Chicken Broth" (¥1000) and "Pork Curry with Pork Broth" (¥1000), as well as rotating seasonal and limited edition curries. They also offer options for a combination of 2 or 3 curry dishes. The rice is a mix of Japanese and Indian rice, with a fluffy texture. The portion is about 200g, with options for a large serving of 300g (+¥100) or additional rice at a rate of 1 gram for 1 yen. They also offer a variety of side dishes and drinks. We ordered a combination of 2 curries (¥1200~) for two people, choosing a total of 4 curry dishes. We also added 2 side dishes. Some of the dishes we tried were: Smoky Andhra Chicken (¥1100) - A spicy chicken curry from South India with a deep aroma of smoked spices. Not too spicy. Cold Moolcoranbu (¥1000) - A yogurt-flavored vegetable curry with okra and other summer vegetables, spiced with yogurt, green chili, and spices, and served cold. Cold Shime Saba Vindaloo (¥1100) - A cold and tangy fish curry made with vinegar-soaked mackerel roasted and mixed with masala, topped with marinated vegetables and herbs. Beef and Herb Curry (¥1200) - Inspired by a Thai meat and herb salad called "Larb." Beef cooked with spices, herbs, and lemon juice, topped with fresh herbs, mint, and lime leaves. Zunda Dal (¥200) - A slightly sweet soup with mashed edamame and three types of beans. Squid Ink Upma (¥250) - A chewy snack made from coarsely ground semolina, flavored with squid ink. Each curry has its own unique twist and all are delicious. They blend elements from Indian curry with French, ramen, Japanese, and ethnic cuisine, creating a playful yet sophisticated culinary experience. While there are many curry shops in Shimokitazawa, this might be our favorite. On the table, you'll find cucumber pickles and pickled ginger as condiments for the curry. The cucumber pickles are heavily spiced and quite spicy, so be careful not to add too much at once. The pickled ginger is finely minced and turned into a chutney for flavor variation. Both have strong flavors that can drastically change the taste of the curry, so it's best to try them in small amounts.
