Hello! I recently had a soy milk foam ice at "Kichijokaro Gion Store" and then decided to have lunch at the neighboring "Gion Emon" restaurant after being drawn to the menu they had displayed in front of their store. The menu that caught my eye was the Special Lunch limited to 10 servings, the "Charcoal-grilled Oshizushi Set" (marinated tuna). I couldn't resist the idea of having charcoal-grilled marinated tuna from a sushi restaurant in Gion! Even if it was sold out, I thought I could still enjoy a tuna bowl. Despite it being Saturday lunchtime, the restaurant was surprisingly quiet with only one group of customers, and the limited 10 servings of the charcoal-grilled Oshizushi Set were still available.
I ordered the Charcoal-grilled Oshizushi Set (1500 yen) which included rice, miso soup, yuba sashimi, assorted sashimi (salmon, amberjack, sea bream - 2 pieces each), and charcoal-grilled marinated tuna (3 pieces). Let me start by saying that the lunch was quite impressive. It was better than the rating on the top page of Tabelog (as of August 2, 2016, currently 3.11). Now, here's the review:
Food (4.0 stars)
- Charcoal-grilled Oshizushi Set
Yuba sashimi with wasabi soy sauce, a nice Kyoto touch.
- Assorted sashimi
Salmon, amberjack, sea bream - all fresh and delicious, typical of a Gion sushi restaurant.
- Charcoal-grilled marinated tuna
Marinated in soy sauce, sake, ginger, and mirin perhaps? No fishy smell, and grilling it just right enhances the tenderness and flavor. Make sure to grill it well to fully enjoy the charcoal-grilled goodness.
If you're looking for a fresh fish lunch in the Gion area, this is a highly recommended spot.
Service (3.7 stars)
Very polite and attentive service.
Atmosphere (3.7 stars)
For sushi lunches or bowls, you can sit at the counter, but for charcoal-grilled dishes, you'll be seated at a table. The place was quiet, allowing for a relaxing dining experience.
Value for money (3.8 stars)
Considering the individual charcoal grills provided for each person and the quality of the sashimi, the Charcoal-grilled Oshizushi Set (1500 yen) is quite a good deal.
Overall, Gion lunches are usually crowded, but this restaurant was surprisingly quiet. It's a rare find in Kyoto for a good quality, reasonably priced fish lunch, making it a worthwhile spot to remember.
