In the prestigious dining area of Gosho Minami in Kyoto, the Italian restaurant "Ludens" has opened a new restaurant on the second floor that exudes new charm. Dinner offers only course meals (¥10,000), while lunch, available only on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, offers a paella set, showcasing authentic Spanish cuisine. I visited on a sunny afternoon in mid-November 2021. As I ascended the stairs past the first floor "Ludens," I was warmly greeted by the chef and a supportive female staff member. The main seating area features an open kitchen counter, with beautiful persimmon tannin wallpaper created by the renowned Japanese paper artist Wataru Hatano, harmonizing well with the ceiling beams. For lunch that day, diners could choose between the original ham salad or tortilla, then select from three types of paella as the main dish. I opted for the tortilla and the chef's recommended paella, starting with the tortilla, which had a creamy egg center complemented by a balanced mix of potatoes. While the omelet itself was mildly seasoned, when paired with the provided dip, it achieved just the right amount of flavor. Sprinkling the homemade seven-spice powder added a slightly spicy kick. The chef's recommended paella, featuring chicken and mushrooms, was truly outstanding, with a rich concentration of rice stock and the umami flavors of the ingredients blending seamlessly. I added a cheesecake for ¥300, which, while not as impressive as the paella, was still satisfying. In total, the tortilla, chicken and mushroom paella, and cheesecake came to ¥3,000. The vegetable paella option is priced at ¥2,200. I had a brief chat with the chef, who shared that he honed his craft at "La Paella" in Matsugasaki, Kyoto, and "Restaurante Amador" in Andalusia, Malaga, before returning to Kyoto. He was recommended for the chef position at this new establishment due to his close relationship with the owner-chef of "Ludens." The chef is also a sake sommelier and Sake Diploma holder, emphasizing Japanese sake pairings. The restaurant is run by the chef and a supportive female staff member, both of whom left a positive impression with their attentive and friendly service. The menu displayed in the restaurant featured dishes such as snow crab and red sea bream, leaving a lasting impression with its ambiance and atmosphere. While Spanish restaurants in Kyoto are typically more casual, "Ludens" offers the opportunity to enjoy dishes prepared with expertise from the original Spanish restaurant in Malaga. The paella set lunch is available on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, starting from ¥2,200. The evening course, which currently consists of around 10 items for ¥10,000, promises an even higher level of satisfaction.
