There is a Thai restaurant located within walking distance from Kitayama Station on the Kyoto Municipal Subway Karasuma Line, along Kitayama Street. The chef is a native Thai who has tailored the menu for Japanese customers, using local Kyoto vegetables such as Kyo-yasai. The restaurant is quite spacious, and upon entering, you can fully experience the Thai atmosphere. It is a great place to dine alone or have a party with around 10 people. There is a tuk-tuk parked in front of the restaurant, making it easy to locate. I visited for dinner this time. Since the menu was extensive, I opted for the Gapao dinner set. It included Gapao rice, chicken and spring rolls, soup, dessert, and was both satisfying in terms of portion size and taste! It has become a highly recommended restaurant!

Located in Kitayama, Kyoto, just east of the botanical garden, CHANG-NOI is a Thai restaurant with a tuk-tuk as its landmark. The Pad Thai, water spinach, and various other dishes were very delicious and easy to eat. The atmosphere was also nice, and I was satisfied with my first Thai meal in a long time.

I heard that there is an authentic Thai restaurant in Kitayama. When I visited around 12 o'clock on Sunday, there were a few groups of customers already there, but I was seated immediately and the food was served in about 15 minutes. I ordered the Pad Thai set, and it was well-spiced and closely resembled what I had in Thailand. The impression was that they were faithfully reproducing the local flavors rather than catering to Japanese tastes. I am curious about the other dishes as well. If I am in the area again, I will consider this restaurant as an option. Thank you for the meal.

There is a cute tuk-tuk parked in front of the store, which is a landmark. I love this store. You can enjoy your meal while looking at the outside scenery in the open-air with open windows. The interior of the store and the small items are very stylish! It's a store that makes you feel like you're really in Thailand. Personally, I recommend the Yam Wun Sen. If you want to try various Thai dishes, you can eat them in a set at a reasonable price. The dishes are made by Thai locals, so they are easy to eat with a Japanese taste. There were also elderly customers. There was a mini bar at the store's counter, so I would like to use it for a second round.

The restaurant opened at 11:30 and was almost full right away! I ordered the Gapao rice with a small side of green curry. The flavor was spicier than I expected, but it was delicious and I enjoyed it. I also liked the option to order small dishes to try a variety of things. The temperature inside was just right with the windows open, creating a nice open atmosphere.

I visited the restaurant for lunch on Monday, May 29, 2023. There were about 6 customers already there when I arrived. The restaurant is quite large, so it was not crowded. I ordered the "Kuiteao Nam" set with extra noodles. It only took about 5 minutes for the food to be served. The taste was simple, so I added some Thai condiments like fish sauce and vinegar to season it. I prefer a lot of fish sauce, which is a classic flavor I enjoyed in Thailand. I also added a little bit of chili for some heat. The dish brought back nostalgic flavors, but it had beef in it which was different from what I had in Thailand. Nevertheless, it was delicious.

I ordered the lunch set of Khao Man Gai. I changed the soup to Tom Yum Kung, and the total was 1265 yen including tax. The set includes Khao Man Gai, two side dishes, salad, and Tom Yum Kung. The salad is full of vegetables, and the two side dishes could be described as spicy minced chicken stir-fry and a simmered dish with watercress, bamboo shoots, mushrooms, carrots, and more. The minced chicken dish is a spicy stir-fry with a crumbly texture. The simmered dish is soy sauce-based and has a strong flavor that could also work as a Japanese dish. Khao Man Gai is cooked in a light chicken broth without any extra seasoning. It may seem lacking in flavor for those used to stronger tastes. The black sauce drizzled on top is sweet, like black honey. This combination may seem unfamiliar, but as you eat, the subtle deliciousness of the rice soaked in chicken broth becomes apparent, suggesting that this is the local taste. It may not be to everyone's liking due to its unique flavor, but it can become quite addictive, and I would like to try other menu items as well. I personally love Tom Yum Kung. Its blend of sourness, spiciness, and sweetness creates a deep and rich flavor. It is a dish I would definitely recommend trying at this restaurant. The mini soup had a whole shrimp in it, which was a nice touch. The restaurant faces a main street, with open windows creating a relaxed atmosphere. It offers a menu close to local flavors in an ethnic setting.

This is a genuine Thai restaurant. I enjoyed the food very much. The dishes are not too spicy, so even those who are not fans of spicy food will be fine. The noodle soup of the day is also recommended, it's a light noodle soup with rice noodles. I personally like the green papaya salad. The classic Tom Yum Goong and the chicken with cashew nuts stir-fry were also excellent.

I visited after a long time. It's been a few years, I think. I ordered the Khao Man Gai set. It's chicken rice made with long grain rice. The rice doesn't taste much like soup. The black sauce felt like black sugar, but it seems to be Chinese black soy sauce, as I found out when I looked it up. Ginger is served on the side. Chili was also served, and that really added to the dish. I thought it was an interesting dish. The Tom Yum Kung was still delicious as always.

In these difficult times when it's hard to go out, I had dinner at a nearby restaurant. They seem to be operating with reduced seating for safety, which is reassuring. The customers mostly seem to be locals, which is also comforting. I had Thai-style omelette with sweet chili sauce, which had a good amount of saltiness. It's a nice change from my usual bland diet, with a strong Thai flavor. The portion size was just right for one person. The shrimp paste spring rolls with crispy skin were delicious, with a nice texture of juicy shrimp inside. They also provided fish sauce and chili sauce, both of which complemented the dish well. The Thai tea had a strong vanilla flavor, perfect for a hot summer day. It would have been even better to enjoy it outdoors. I think Singha beer would have been a good match with the food. There was a solo female diner who seemed to be enjoying her meal with alcohol. The restaurant offers set menus for dinner on weekdays for less than 1,000 yen, which is very convenient. I usually order the same dishes, but this time I tried a la carte and I think I could easily stop by after work.

I ordered Pad Thai. I have tried Thai cuisine in various places, but in a good way, I thought the taste was mild and well-balanced! I think it is easy to eat for those who are not used to ethnic cuisine. The daikon pickles were thickly cut and had a fun texture. The shrimp seemed to be grilled thoroughly first, and I could feel the care put into making it. It seems that it is recommended to try a variety of dishes in a course or set menu. The prices for individual menu items are concentrated around 800 to 1000 yen, and I thought it would be nice to have some slightly cheaper options to widen the range as a good snack with drinks. The atmosphere of the restaurant is outstanding. As we head into the hot season, the open interior will feel even more comfortable. I was slightly bothered by the chatter of the waitstaff.

It's almost full even though it's a regular weekday night. The menu is extensive so it's hard to decide. They had a special dinner set for weekday nights, but I wanted to eat what I liked so I ordered a la carte.
- Stir-fried chicken and cashew nuts: A common dish in Chinese cuisine, but is it also in Thai cuisine? The texture of the vegetables, cashew nuts, and tender chicken was delicious.
- Crab omelette: Couldn't really taste the crab.
- Red curry: Lots of meat and tasty, but hard to pick up from the flat plate. The spiciness was mild and easy to eat.
- Coconut soup with shrimp: Instead of the usual Tom Yum Goong, I tried a different menu. The acidity is toned down by the coconut, with lemongrass and herbs adding flavor, but they were too tough to eat.
We were full with 4 dishes + jasmine rice for 2 people. I want to try other dishes on the menu next time.

A Thai restaurant near Kitayama Station where you can fully experience the Thai atmosphere. The food is very delicious and comes out quickly. They have tatami seating, so it's safe to bring children. You can really feel Thailand and the food is amazing! I'm a repeat customer.

This was my first visit to a Thai restaurant recommended for Japanese people, and it was really delicious. The restaurant is located in Kyoto, Japan. I had Pad Thai, fresh spring rolls, fried rice, and pork skewers. The staff was very friendly and the food was delicious. I sat at the counter and watched the kitchen staff work efficiently. The fresh spring rolls had a great chewy texture. This was the best Thai restaurant I have tried in Kyoto. Lastly, the pork skewers with peanuts were the most delicious. I recommend trying them out.

I was curious about the Thai restaurant in Kitayama. It's easy to spot with the tuk-tuk outside. The interior is quite spacious. There is no parking so you have to park at a nearby coin parking. My friend ordered the limited 12 servings of Khao Man Gai set with a glass of beer for ¥220 and changed the soup to Tom Yum Kung. I added a mini mini Genki One (Green Curry without rice) for an additional ¥400. It was a cold day today so we wanted something warm. It was served in less than 10 minutes. The portion and seasoning are of course tailored for Japanese taste. It's stylish and easy to eat. The Khao Man Gai cooked with Thai rice is very delicious with a tasty sauce. The shredded ginger on the side could be cut finer for easier eating. Surprisingly, the Green Curry is quite good with plenty of ingredients! The soup in the set is light and refreshing.

Located in Kitayama, Kyoto, this Thai restaurant is easy to spot with a tuk-tuk parked in front! They offer a variety of bottled beers, but I recommend trying the Mekong Thai whiskey on the rocks! The quality may not be as high as Japanese whiskey, but it's perfect for enjoying with Thai cuisine. The menu is very extensive, with dishes like Yam Wun Sen, Som Tam, Poo Nim Pad Pong Karee, and seafood stir-fry. Each dish was delicious, especially the Poo Nim Pad Pong Karee (soft shell crab curry with scrambled eggs) which was irresistible. The authentic flavors pair well with the jasmine rice. The portion sizes are decent, so sharing with a few people is ideal! The interior of the restaurant is cute and cozy, perfect for a relaxing meal.

I went to this restaurant after visiting the Kyoto Botanical Garden. I had imagined that Thai cuisine would be very spicy, but it wasn't too spicy, so I think even first-timers can enjoy it safely. The Pad Thai (Thai-style fried noodles) and Tom Yum Goong were also very good.

To CHANG-NOI,
There is a tuk-tuk parked near the entrance. I had planned to go to Katsuzen, but they were unexpectedly closed, so I ended up coming here for lunch, battling against time. There was one table available, and the place was almost full. I wonder if everyone else, like me, just came back from the Kyoto Concert Hall? The interior of the restaurant has a woody feel, creating a local atmosphere.
I ordered the Khao Soi for 1,000 yen, which was the first item on the menu. I should have taken a picture before ordering, but I regretted it later.
13:10
The Khao Soi arrived on a tray. It had various toppings. There was a plate with appetizers, two side dishes, and toppings and condiments for the Khao Soi. Since I ordered it right away, and the place was busy, there was no explanation on how to eat it. I put the toppings from the small plate on the noodles and tried adjusting the spiciness with the condiment in the jar. I have a high tolerance for spiciness and sourness, so I found it enjoyable.
The place seems to be very popular, so I rushed to have lunch this time. Next time, I would like to take my time to look at the menu and savor the flavors. Thank you for the meal.

This time, I challenged myself to try a cuisine that I don't have much experience with! I had been curious about this restaurant for a while, and despite it being a weekday, it was bustling with people. The interior had an Asian vibe and a relaxed atmosphere. We were seated at a table after a short wait. The lunch menu had a variety of options, but my mother, who is not a fan of herbs, fish sauce, or coconut milk, asked me to choose something she could eat. I wasn't very knowledgeable about the menu either, so I relied on the staff's recommendations for our order. We ordered the following: Moo Pad Krapow for 950 yen with an additional 200 yen to switch the soup to Tom Yum Kung (for my mother) and the limited 12 servings of Khao Man Gai for 950 yen (for me). The Moo Pad Krapow included Kagoshima pork stir-fried with Thai basil served over rice, a mini salad, and two small side dishes. The Tom Yum Kung soup set was a must-try for my mother, who managed to eat it despite not being a fan of basil. The Khao Man Gai featured chicken served with seasoned rice, a mini salad, and two small side dishes. The chicken was moist and delicious, especially when paired with the sweet sesame sauce. The small side dishes included pork tempura and a kind of egg and green bean dumpling. The light soup was made with daikon and glass noodles and was gentle on the palate. Overall, the dishes were not bad, but towards the end, we felt like we couldn't eat anymore. It was an experience, and I would say it was okay.

It's been about a year since I last visited this place. I came back because I missed the taste. On a Sunday, 70% of the seats were filled within 5 minutes of opening. I ordered the Yakisoba Battai set for 880 yen and added a mini Tom Yum Kung for 300 yen. The Tom Yum Kung had a shrimp flavor with a sour and spicy taste that I enjoyed. It had some dried grass-like ingredient mixed in, which I think was lemongrass. The Battai had scrambled eggs with nuts, giving it a unique texture. The fresh spring rolls were familiar, but the two small dishes were unknown to me, so I couldn't explain them. I love this unique cuisine and will definitely visit again.
