I arrived at a Kyoto machiya located just off the main street of Nijo Station in search of curry. The curry was delicious, of course, but the spiced vegetables on top were amazing. Today's special curry - spinach curry for 1000 yen.

A spice curry restaurant located in a residential street. This place is hard to find if you don't know about it. I ordered a 3-curry plate (Chicken Keema Curry, Chicken Curry, Dal) with an additional topping of grilled cheese for 200 yen. The spice curry is topped with various side dishes. I prefer it a bit spicier.

A popular curry restaurant from Tottori has moved from Shichijo to Senbon Sanjo (nearest station is JR Nijo). They are currently in temporary operation with a menu offering a "3 Curry Plate" (1200 yen) which includes Turmeric Rice, Dal, Keema Curry, and Chicken Curry. The plate is carefully crafted with a balance of cumin, coriander, and turmeric as base spices, along with other spices adjusted in grams for each dish. The plate also includes 4-5 side dishes like carrot spice stir-fry and onion achaar to complement the flavors. They plan to open a tea stand in the future, so it will be exciting to see what's next!

This shop was previously located on Nijo-dori Kawaramachi, but moved to this location in April of this year. The shop is located north of Kyoto Sanjo Shotengai, in a renovated traditional house. This time, we tried the "3 Curry Plate" (1,200 yen), which includes Pork Keema Curry, Dal Curry, and a choice of either Coconut Curry or Chicken Curry. We chose the Coconut Curry. The dish came with Turmeric Rice, 3 types of curry, coleslaw, spiced carrots, pickles, ginger, and onion achcharu all beautifully presented on a large white plate. The Coconut Curry had a strong coconut oil flavor, creamy richness, and a spicy kick with chunks of tender chicken breast. The Dal Curry had mashed beans with a light flavor and mild spiciness. The Pork Keema Curry had a strong spice aroma, plenty of minced meat, a rich depth of flavor, and a hint of tanginess. Each curry had its own unique characteristics, with a pleasant blend of spices and flavors to enjoy.

I wanted to eat curry, so I went in without high expectations, but it turned out to be surprisingly delicious. It seems like they moved from somewhere else. Still, I don't think many people end up here. It's in a quiet residential area, in a one-way narrow street in the old town of Kyoto. You have to rely on Google Maps to find it for your first visit or revisit. Since it wasn't long after breakfast, I ordered a regular portion. The restroom had a DIY feel, which I liked. The interior of the restaurant was nicely renovated from a traditional townhouse. When the food arrived, I felt like the portion was small, but I ended up satisfied. I started with the chicken curry, which was a slightly spicy, typical curry. It was good but not outstanding. The next curry with beans was excellent. It had a sweetness that was soothing and comforting, with a good curry flavor despite the small portion. It's something I would want to eat when tired or feeling unwell. I used to have a prejudice against beans in curry, but this was delicious. The third curry, pork keema, had a rich flavor with different spices that added depth. It was also very tasty with pickles and vegetables as delightful accents. I finished it in no time and thought I would definitely come back.

The spices are strong but not spicy, and the umami flavor is rich. I definitely want to eat it again.
